Strikeforce open to Bellator co-promotion, Gilbert Melendez vs. Eddie Alvarez:

A potential fight between two of the world's top 155-pound fighters outside of the Ultimate Fighting Championship is one step closer to fruition.

Just hours after officials from Bellator Fighting Championships distributed a press release campaigning for a fight between their lightweight champ, Eddie Alvarez [Number 5], and Strikeforce lightweight title-holder Gilbert Melenedez [Number 3], Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he's open to co-promoting the champion-vs.-champion bout.

"If the stars align and we can work out all the terms and conditions and timing, we'd do it," Coker told MMAjunkie.com. "Of course we would. Why wouldn't we? Let's go do this."

Not much I like about Strikeforce, but this is one ’em. The willingness to co-promote and have champions fight other champions is awesome. Should be good if it happens. I think Melendez will win a 5 round unanimous decision.

The only reason these guys are willing to do champion vs champion fights is because everyone knows that they’re not the true champions of the division… It’s a great fight no doubt, but i dunno why people are getting this hyped about it. People complain about it when the UFC puts together fights as good or better then this. It’s like if there’s a good fight outside of the UFC it gets this non-UFC hype multiplier by default.

Pretty ridiculous if you ask me…

It doesn’t really matter that they’re not the true champs in the division…its a fight we’d like to see, and the co-promotion is appreciated. And there’s nothing wrong with hyping fights :P

I'm just saying

I have to scoff a little every time when people are all “OMG COKER <333333” when he co-promotes, when in reality if he were in Dana White’s position he would in all likelihood not be interested in co-promoting at all (if he were smart).

And there’s nothing wrong with getting hyped for a fight… if you’re getting hyped because of the fight. In situations like this is suspect a lot of the hype is due to more then just the actual fight.

If Gilbert Melendez were to take out Eddie Alvarez next week I don’t think it would be insane to see him at #1 in the overall lightweight rankings.

If this fight comes to fruition the timing will be important.

what? i feel both these guys beat Frankie, at least its one hell of a fight.

This is exactly the sort of strategy of cooperation all other MMA promotions besides the UFC need to adopt in order to 1) stay afloat and 2) offer any sort of competition to the UFC.

The closest analogy I can think of is android(all others) vs iphone (UFC).

Bellator doesn’t really compete with the UFC.

Bellator and UFC are both in the same business. They simply are at different scales of operation, so yes, they are competitors with the UFC, just as a mosquito is your competition for your blood. Because of the scale difference is exactly why cooperative strategies are needed.

by Cocytus on May 17, 2010 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but Bellator really markets to a niche. They market entirely to the hardcores that already consume UFC. They aren’t meant to siphon off viewers like a mosquito would in your analogy. Strikeforce tries to do that. Bellator works alongside the UFC. They are more like a fancy rarely used banana peeler to the UFC’s banana. (Admittedly its a terriple analogy but its all I could think of.)

I’d say if UFC is the WWE and Strikeforce is TNA, then Bellator is something like Ring of Honor. That’s analogy for any wrestling marks out there.

I think what hlebtasic meant was that Bellator’s current strategy is not to be a direct competitor with the UFC. They operate in the same space, yes. But aren’t directly competing for “top promotion” because right now that’s not an attainable goal. I’m sure if you said “would you like to be the #1 MMA promotion in the world?” they’d say “of course!”

But right now I don’t think their goal is any sort of direct competition.

I like this matchup.

Gil doesnt have many challengers in Strikeforces thing LW division. Dont under rate Eddie in this one.

Eddie looked great vs Neer and Gil picked apart Aoki. toss up.

I’m more intersted in seeing who they could match up against Hector Lombard. Hendo, Jacare, Lawler, or Mayhem would be good.

I like the matchup but i dislike Bellator getting involved in any way with Strikeforce. Bellator seems to have their shit together in a lot of ways that Strikeforce, how do i say……..doesn’t.

Really like the fight though.

You mean like the way I have to watch their figts a doy or 3 after the event and have read them on every MMA forum and watched the highlights on Inside MMA first? Is that the way they have their shit together? If Strikeforce put an entire year between fights they would probably look more organized as well.

But I say bring it on to this fight and co-promotion.

Gil takes this one handily imo

Eddie lost to Aoki just a couple years ago. Gil just dominated the tears out of Aoki and it wasn’t even close. I’m going with El Nino and I’ll put money on it :P

your MMAth is so fail

Did you actually watch the Alvarez/Aoki fight? Keep in mind it was under DREAM rules where the ref didn’t step in and stop Aoki from doing his butt scoot that has set up many of his sub finishes.

by Polyhedron on May 17, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

i did actually

blaming a loss on a butt scoot is kind of hilarious. Melendez showed how to beat someone who does that – punch him in the face

http://mixedmartialartsblogger.wordpress.com/

by Cory Braiterman on May 18, 2010 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

He didn't, actually

I mean, I think I Melendez would have won anyway, but Aoki never got to butt-scoot for more than 2 seconds without the awful ref ordering another awful standup. Aoki’s admittedly one dimensional style depends on him getting guys to the ground and keeping them there, something the criminally bad reffing in the SF CBS show seemed designed to thwart.

Like I said, I think Melendez still wins that fight, but with better reffing, I think it would have been a lot closer, and Aoki would have had more opportunity to work his game.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

good fight if they put it together

seems like all the positives that come out of strikeforce (heavy artillery being a good card, this fight etc) generally dont involve a man named fedor and his handlers

would like to see them build like this this rather than jumping through hoops and overpaying someone like fedor for little gain

by milson on May 17, 2010 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

Where does this fight happen? Neither promotion is going to want the other to have it, my guess would be DREAM…

how on the internetz, a positive thing will be used to tear down Scott Coker and dismiss Bellator. Sigh.
