Strikeforce planning on possible Jake Shields defection:
A source told Sherdog.com there is a tentative plan to book fights in the division with an eye toward crowning a new 185-pound champion later in 2010, possibly at one of the company’s bigger shows in November or December.
Fighters expected to be in the mix for title consideration include Robbie Lawler, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Dan Henderson, Jason Miller, Tim Kennedy and Luke Rockhold among others.

4 Man mini-tourney
Lawler vs. Miller and Henderson vs. Jacare, winners fight for the vacant title.
Maybe give them each a fight then set up Kennedy Rockhold for a shot at the winner of the tourney.
Then who does the champ fight next? You’ve blown your wad already. SF really needs to get some tournament action happening but not with their current fighters. All challengers cards should be tournament cards.
don’t you know anything about strikeforce? rematch rematch rematch

How many fights does Lawler have left on his contract?
I don’t think Strikeforce wants Robbie anywhere near their MW title given how disgrunteld he has been recently. Shileds bailing on them with the title looked bad enough. If Robbie won and did the same thing, they would be a laughingstock.
Just a name there in the article. Sounds like they still have him in the mix.
Frankly I wouldn’t be shocked to see him stay with SF, he’s a good fighter but he’s not going to garner the attention from the UFC like a guy like Shields.

Dana White and Joe Silva absolutely LOVE Robbie Lawler. The only reason he ever left the UFC was because he got a huge contract offer from ICON right before TUF hit the air and Zuffa didn’t have the money to match it. He was the last guy to get poached off the Zuffa roster before the TUF money started rolling in.
The moment Robbie gets free of his existing contract, the UFC is going to jump all over him. Guaranteed.
Huzzah, Jake Shields fighting top flight competition at his natural weight class in the near future!

Lol
So say Dan Henderson wins, that makes the title look credible, seeing as he was just owned for 5 rounds by the old champ, who left to fight for the organization that would actually show his face in commercials.
Owned for 4 rounds… first round he almost insta-wrecked Jake…

Meh
Everyone already knows SF’s titles are meaningless.

Doesn't he have one more fight left on his contract?
They should give him a tough fight like Jacare at 185 and hope he loses so that the UFC becomes the holder of damaged goods.
At the least, a good fight will come out of the defection.
I don't think he has any figths left.
Strikeforce has a one fight option. They seem to have decided against using it.
Jake vs Jacare would be awsome to see, but imagine if Jake won… Strikeforce would be down one more contender. Not worth the risk.
So what if Jacare loses?
They can have their tournament after that. There are plenty of other challengers. One more fight for Shields in strikeforce means one less fight for him in the UFC and also delays his debut.
I don’t think strikeforce has backed off from exercising their option. They would be dumb not to do it.
Might as well through Diaz in the mix...
He would then hold 2 belts in the same org.

Oh whattup E?
I was under the impression that he was back in the good graces of Dana/Fertittas and would be heading back after his current deal. He’s constantly stated that he’s tired of fighting poor competition. Zuffa has the top Welterweights in the sport.
Also,
Check out Black Train Jack.

He was never really on their bad side though, right? I’ve heard a bunch of times that the split was amicable.

Well, that doesn't make any sense.
If they’re going to replace Jake Shields, they’re going to need more than just Robbie Lawler in there.
(I’m assuming he can only be replaced by another natural welterweight.)

Has Henderson annouced his future plans?
Did anyone think it was his age and/or Shields or perhaps he was having a hard time making 185. Maybe he can just move up to 205 and fight there.

I would think they wouldnt let Robbie Lawler anywhere near their MW title seeing as though when his contract expires he’s going to the UFC as well.
