Shinya Aoki backstage after the Gilbert Melendez fight:
"It can't continue like this...if this situation continues I won't be able to know the great world."
"I can't be the best."
"This is mortifying."
"Better than when I lost to Mach Sakurai though."
"I still want to continue fighting."
"It is not the cage, Melendez is strong".

It is simple. It is called American weight cutting, my friend...
Day-man! Fighter of the Night-man! Champion of the sun. You're a master of Karate and friendship for everyone!
"Charlie"
There doesn't seem to be a middle ground with Aoki.
It’s either, “I am the best! I broke your fucking arm, bitch!” or “It’s over! Japan is a colony of the US! Bow down to our overlords!”

Man, I thought the crying was satisfying,
…but this is almost too much joy to handle.
He should go train with the Diaz brothers and learn some emotional maturity.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

Whoa
I’m glad that Gilbert won, because I can’t stand cocky Aoki, but this is insane.
Seeing asian fighters cry is really disturbing.
If by "disturbing" you mean "hilarious"
…then I agree 100%.

I don't have to understand a thing about "Japanese emotional life and culture"
…to appreciate watching a narcissist and megalomaniac having a full-on crying-like-a-girl meltdown. That’s the kind of humor that bridges cultures, man.

Not at all
And I didn’t say that. He’s just crying in the same way a little girl cries. :-)
I know I’m being a dick to Aoki here, but after the arm-break/bird-flip shenanigans and acting like he’s the only figter that matters in Japan, seeing him a) get his comeuppance and b) react like a complete child is a real treat.
People with a shred of maturity don’t act like that.

Thanks!
Although I wonder: if I had a better understanding of Japanese culture, could it be EVEN FUNNIER?
Like, as a guy who thinks watching a proven jerk get his heart broken, it’s pretty funny. But if I understood the many ways to bow and the Japanese concept of honor and all that it might be funnier. And if I were his former classmate growing up in Japan and had to listen to his madness all the time, this might approach some kind of humor event horizon where watching this video would send me past the point of humor and into a complete near-catatonic state where nothing could ever be funny again!

That shit is tough to watch...
Regardless of how cocky the dude is, he’s still a fighter… It’s an emotional experience to lose like that. Give the man a break.

seriously
i’m probably the biggest aoki detractor on here but the man needs some fucking slack, he just lost the biggest fight of his life…. i’d probably cry too

It's true, now that he lost, his entire country was sold to America.
That’s gotta suck, having all that pressure on yourself.

Does...
anyone know what Kawajiri was saying at the end of the video?

I'm thinking some along the lines of
“Hmmmmmmm, I know the proper gameplan. I’m gonna fuckin’ smash him, son.”
Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
here's a fuller translation
except for a couple of bits that couldn’t be made out due to King Mo’s obnoxiously loud fucking entourage.
Aoki –
I can’t win the way I’m fighting. I’ll end up as the little fish in the pond. I’ll never be #1 (like this). It’s not like the time I lost to Mach, it’s completely different. I’m very discouraged, but at the same time it’s like I’ve woken up. It’s a rude awakening. Something’s opening. I still want to remain as an MMA fighter.
It’s a completely different way of fighting. It’s not about the environment, he was just really strong. It’s not about researching skills. I’m just fundamentally weaker. That’s the way I’m feeling. I don’t feel as though I can even guard him.
Ok that’s enough. I know what I have to do.
It hurts!
I don’t regret the fight.
I don’t know if I can go home now! (laughs)
Kawajiri –
I don’t know… He didn’t fight well… and for someone who’s been called a Japanese Prince (*or something similar) to be crying and acting weakly… it’s not good. I don’t believe a man should weep in public. It’s not cool.

also
what did you interpret his meaning? that his wrestling sucked and he can’t succeed without it or something else?? THANKS AGAIN!
by cagefightonacid on May 17, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions
He said “guard” a couple of times, and I assumed he meant that he wasn’t able to do anything off of his back, but he may have meant that he couldn’t take him down, or that if he could take him down, he wouldn’t be able to control him.
But yeah, his strength, his wrestling (he didn’t mention striking but I assume he knows he’s weak there as well), everything needs to be greatly improved upon if he ever wants to be relevant in MMA outside of Japan.
Hey Pete
R.I.P.
As much as I can’t stand Aoki’s attitude, I’m not gonna shit all over a dude who at least went out their and got his ass kicked for five round, when he could have found a way out. His corner could have had him quit on the stool, but they didn’t.
There’s a great many fighters who go out there and know that they might lose, and don’t care. Guys who’ll try to please a crowd for a bonus check, or guys who slack off in the gym and will throw out every excuse in the book. But Aoki was emotionally involved in this fight, it meant a great deal to him, and I respect that.
I’d like to see him on a Strikeforce card again, give him a b level fighter and see if he sinks or swims.

aoki at 145 could be interesting
but i think he gets manhandled by aldo, faber, brown, and gamburyan
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Aoki at 245 would be interesting.
There isn’t a weight class where I wouldn’t like to see him get beat up.

kawajiri
I think he said something alon the lines of
“what shall we do about this? he came home crying.”
then he either said
“men should not cry so easily”
or
“im not the kind of man to cry like that.”
i think the last word was
“kakkowari”
which sounds like broad slang for “not cool.”
i may be wrong as i havent spoken or heard japanese for months…
Be water, my friend.

Need more profession about translate
Aoki
Need to be change from this fight. If not I can’t be No1.
I mortifying, but it’s not like lose against Mach.I get something as hint.
It’s not about training environment.Melendez is strong.
It’s not about research.I won when opponent research me but I can’t forestall research this time.so I simply weak.
But I’m not regret about fight. Can I back to Japan?
Kawajiri
He said He bring Japanese MMA brand for states.
I do think man should not cry easy.
So I watch it as unseemly.
