Jim Ross gives his prediction for Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar:
"I'm a Lesnar guy but I will guarantee you that this will be a war and will be Lesnar's toughest test to date in MMA. Shane Carwin has many of the same physical tendencies and comparable athletic background that Brock possesses but until someone gets it done, I'm going with Lesnar. The mental makeup of Brock Lesnar is something to behold and one has to fully understand the man to know just how much he hates/detests losing. The former WWE and NCAA champion will train like a madman in preparation for this July 3 confrontation on PPV in Vegas."
"For the record, I've known many 'driven,' world class athletes in my career but none more so than Brock Lesnar."

I always love to hear J.R.’s take on the MMA world, he always comes across as very knowledgeable in his statements.
Yeah? Remember last year when Lebron won the MVP? Who took home the real MVP? You know, the one the comes with a damn championship?

Well, if you read Ross’s statements above and then see if he does in fact seem “knowledgeable” as Zak says it’s not hard to follow my line of reasoning.
This one is my favorite:
The former WWE and NCAA champion will train like a madman …
Brock Lesnar train hard for a fight. In other news, water is wet. Film at 11.

I was being facetious
It was a Family Guy reference. Peter is at a party and Quagmire ask him if he wants a beer. Peter tells Quagmire that he can’t because he told Lois that he wouldn’t drink. Quagmire says “ohhh, come on” to which Peter replies “I never thought of it that way.”
Jim Ross is surprisingly insightful when it comes to MMA. I’m a fan.

i had no idea who this guy was till i starting reading his opinions on mma
and his take on stuff is always real accurate and educated, more so than many many mainstream journalists when they talk about mma which is odd coming from a guy who makes his living in the wwe and selling bbq sauce
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
God, I'd love it it...
If Good ‘Ol JR replaced what’s his face and it was JR and Rogan doing the announcing. I have no doubt JR would be every bit at MMA as he is at pro wrestling.

I like JR but I don’t get how you guys think that this breakdown is groundbreaking. pretty much all of JR’s fight breakdowns are very simplistic, yet somehow the fans seem to think that he’s some kind of mma analyzing messiah.
I don’t think he is half as knowledgable about mma as you guys may think.

I still gotta take Carwin on this. Lesnar was awful on his feet in the Mir rematch, and if he lets Carwin connect the way Mir did, he will be put to sleep.
Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.
I’m going with Lesnar, but what you say about his standup being rough does make me very nervous vs. a guy like Carwin.

There were a total of 12 punches thrown that whole fight
I really don’t think there’s very much to be gained from 12 punches in terms of insight.
This is a very tough fight to call...
I say double knockout ala Rocky III.

I think Carwin can take this
Like in the Mir fight, Dirty boxing will be a huge factor in this fight.
Carwin’s hands will be too heavy for Brock’s chin, I think.
If Brock gets the chance for the takedown before any clinchwork or strikes, I think there’s gonna be a whole lot of smothering action going on.
Yeah? Remember last year when Lebron won the MVP? Who took home the real MVP? You know, the one the comes with a damn championship?
And...
If Carwin can stay on his feet long enough to get his back on the cage he can start the clinch game. Hypothetically, of course.
Should be a great fight. I’m excited to see it.
I think it’ll be a quick fight, one way or another… There’s just entirely too much strength in that cage at one time.
Yeah? Remember last year when Lebron won the MVP? Who took home the real MVP? You know, the one the comes with a damn championship?
He also has fists larger than my skull.

Brock isn’t a complete dope, he’s gonna shoot for the takedown immediately and not waste time possibly getting KTFO when he has a much easier chance of winning by getting top ground control.

You don’t think that Carwin is a more difficult stylistic matchup than Dos Santos or Cain?

More than Cain, yeah
Dos Santos is still a bit of a mystery, honestly. I’m not saying Carwin can’t win, but so many people are so cocksure that he’s going to dethrone Lesnar, no problem. Hoping he’ll win is one thing, but people have seemingly forgotten how dominant Lesnar has been.

A dominant run that includes
a hard-fought victory over a 62 year old Randy Couture and a win over a Gabby Jay-like Frank Mir. I think Carwin’s recent fight history is every bit as impressive as Lesnar’s, if not moreso. Although Lesnar has held the title for a decent amount of time now, most of it has been without defending his title. I honestly have no idea who will win this match, and if he beats Carwin, we can call him dominant. Until then, Lesnar is still a 4-1 relative mma neophyte.

4 things.. rocky 2 had the double ko.. carwin (to me at least) looks way stronger and definantly more crazy so he’ll win.. brock lesnar cant be the best hw of all time, hes had all of 5 fights? and i hate whats happened to pro-wrestling but JR is from a time when it ruled and is legit.
about the double KO
Rocky 2 did have a double knockdown, but Part 3 insinuated at the end of the film that another double KO was coming when Rocky and Apollo step in the ring to have private boxing match.
AND
JR is legit.

Besides that , Ross is really starting to be a favorite of mine when it comes to his comments on MMA, very very smart guy.
"Everyone has a game plan, untell they get hit." -Mike Tyson
And now for something completely different
If Lesnar takes it to the ground, the one key thing that will be interesting is if Carwin can utilize his BJJ. Yes he’s only a purple belt, but none the less he’s at least trained a little more in submissions than Lesnar. I think that is the one hidden factor. My choice: Carwin by Submission Rd. 2
I very much doubt that's true
Lesnar’s BJJ coach is one of the finest grapplers in the world in Rodrigo Medieros and he trains full time. If anything, I’d bet Lesnar has the superior BJJ.
Yup. I’m not sure where this idea that Brock is foreign to submission grappling or that he has a lack of quality BJJ training comes from.
When Mir tried in the rematch
Brock just made him stand back up, then shoved him back against the cage, got him to the mat, and beat his head. Rinse, repeat.
"Oh, and Joe? If Brian hits any of your delicate millionaires, know that he meant it." - Stacey
Heck, Brock easily outgrappled Mir in the 2nd match. He passed to half guard and then secured that nasty 1 arm half nelson and bashed Mir’s face in. That wasn’t just brute force, it was awesome technique plus brute force. Lesnar’s been paying attention to technique in his training, for sure.
by Hardcharger on May 17, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Unfortunately, that was a very specific gameplan to smash Mir’s half guard. He stood up out of Mir’s open guard but dove into the half. It certainly wasn’t a free-rolling scramble where we got to see how good Lesnar was at improvising quickly through a scramble. His total ground game (aside from the wrestling and one counter to half guard) is a complete mystery.
Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.
I see that people are still sleeping on Brock’s stand up that’s a mistake and something that I hope Carwin isn’t doing. Brock has massive power of his own and while he will look for the takedown and some gnp, he has also shown heavy punches in his fights Carwin better be ready for that.
Nope.
Brock’s standup is pretty low level.
He couldn’t land anything significant on Couture until he clipped the back of his head with a big shot.
Low level striking indeed

Yes, lets ignore Brock rocking him with an ELBOW. Come on man, let’s not throw facts out the window here. His striking isn’t the best, but it’s most definitely functional.

Shane Carwin only has one combo
Let’s not pretend he’s some sort of striking dynamo. He throws a feint jab followed by straight right over and over and over again. It works because he’s got absurd power, not because he’s some sort of refined, technical striker. Lesnar and Carwin both have simplistic striking. They also both have incredible power.
I don’t know. I think I’ll take Couture’s word on it over some random internet guys. He said Brock’s blows were pretty brutal due to his distance, hand size and strength. Does he need polishing? Of course, he has a wrestling base, not a boxing one. But when you have those three things in your striking, it can make up for a lack of finesse.
Plus, everyone constantly seems to assume fighters never improve apparently. Don’t skip the parts of JRs comments talking about Brock’s work ethic/drive. I would bet he spends a decent amount of time working on the things he isn’t great at.

Actually he hit him right above the ear. Basicaly in the temple. Also Brock’s knees that landed on Randy. But don’t let videotape evidence get in the way of your bias.

Got Lesnar on this one
Carwin is no joke, and he can end it with one punch. But I don’t think he’ll get the chance, nor will Carwin be able to bully Lesnar like he did to Mir. And did anyone else notice that Carwin wasn’t able to take Mir down? Doesn’t bode well to me against Lesnar.
certified warlord
Carwin's strategy
against Mir was to press him against the cage and dirty box. Carwin didn’t want to take Mir to the ground and have to worry about his submission game. He could probably employ this same strategy against Lesnar if he chooses to. Although Lesnar has likely improved quite a bit since then, Couture was able to successfully press Lesnar against the fence and dirty box him. He also nearly took Lesnar down if now for Brock grabbing the cage.
"The mat is my church, the ground is my heaven, Jiu-Jitsu is my religion. And once you hit the ground you're in my world..."
Randy didn’t land a strike of significance while clinching with Lesnar. And he ate several brutal knees to the body and one to the head for his troubles. Lesnar also paced himself against Couture and didn’t fight the clinch for much of the time until he wanted out, and then he got out. Brock won’t let Carwin just push him up against the cage in this fight.
