Today on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: Strikeforce Results, ESPN's Jon Anik, UWC's Mike Easton
Live streaming video by Ustream
Remember, our new time slot from now on: Sundays 9 to 11pm EST.
Today on "MMA Nation" we'll be joined by ESPN's Jon Anik. As the host of MMA Live, we'll talk to Anik about the show's development, whether it's too close to the UFC and what the network views as successful metrics now that it has made the leap to television.
We'll also be joined by UWC bantamweight champion Mike "The Hulk" Easton. We'll talk to Easton about his controversial win over Chase Beebe, the growth of MMA in DC and his upcoming title defense against Ryan Diaz at UWC 8 on May 22nd.
I'll also be giving away a brief recap of last night's Washington Combat. A brief mention of Shine Fights will also be thrown in, time permitting.
And who can forget last night's Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery event? We'll be talking all the results and taking your calls. Topics to include:
- Is a potential Overeem vs. Fedor fight a bigger fight than Lesnar vs. Carwin?
- What's next for Andrei Arlovski?
- Am I the worst person in America for idiotically picking Brett Rogers to defeat my personal hero?
"MMA Nation" will air tonight 9:00pm EST to 11:00pm EST on 106.7 The Fan. To listen live over the Internet, go to The Fan's website and click "Listen Live".
I'm also on Twitter: @mmanation.
AS A NEW FEATURE: We'll stream the show live over UStream.tv. Here's my channel. I'll embed the live stream player in this post when the show begins. If you want to ask a question for us to answer on air, leave a question in the comments section. We'll get to all of them.
"MMA Nation" is also available by podcast on iTunes. For now, iTunes is disabled, but the show will be posted on the station's website soon afterward. I'll be sure to put a post up when they're ready to go. And when we're back on iTunes, I'll put up a link to that as well.

Email here.
Talk to you then.

I don't know if it was because I wasn't at the fights live, but..
The crowd seemed pretty flat. Including the commentary. Thoughts?
You might think I’m crazy, but I’d like to hear more Mauro and less Gus/Quadros/Shamrock.

You are the worst person in America. The ’’Reem’’ seems like the ideal heavyweight champ everytime I see a video clip of him. Supreme physique, check. Flashy striking resume, check. Well-rounded enough so that he doesn’t need to be protected, check. Young enough, check. Speaks better english than most mma media, check.
I sincerely hope that you met up with him personally to apologize after his utter destruction of Rogers. ;)

Fedor vs Overeem bigger then Lesnar vs Carwin?
No no no no no.
Fedor will lose. He is imo at best, the 5th best HW right now. Maybe i’m way wrong, but i think his time an elite fighter is simply over. Part of it is his age, another part is the competition as a whole is just better now then it ever was throughout his career, and another part yet his size. If an extremely inexperienced (and not very good) Brett Rogers is able to put him in the sort of danger that he did, my confidence in Fedor to avoid those situations, or survive them should he find himself in them, against the bigger, more skilled and dangerous opponents is next to nil. He’s just not what he once was. Or perhaps he is, but the competition has caught up. Likely a bit of both.
And on the other hand There’s Overeem. For now he’s just a lower top 10 guy. He’s definitely on the way up and the main thing holding him back is his resume. But he has the tools to beat Fedor. Even the biggest Fedor fans have to admit this is a close fight. So think about that for a second. A lower top 10 fighter vs Fedor and it’s a close fight. I just don’t see how that’s half as important or “big” as Brock vs Carwin.
Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

So.
Since Shane Carwin is 35 his career is over too?
Fedor has at least 3-4 more years of fighting in him before his body is going to slow down a lot, not to mention he’s a guy who has never cut weight and has always had excellent cardio.
And lets face it, even if Fedor is a tad slower now than he was, he’s still faster than 95 percent of heavy weights.
I take issue that Rogers had him in any real trouble, and I think part of the problem is that fans don’t know what they are looking at when they see Fedor fight, and the crappy SF commentary doesn’t help one bit. Also people focus on a nose cut and never focus on how many things Fedor did right in that fight.
Reem didn’t throw Rogers, he slipped (If you can watch the fight again).
Fedor threw Rogers around several times.
I think we will see Fedor tested, and go into the third round more often when he fights younger/bigger guys and I think what well will see from Fedor when he is tested will be awesome.
No way am I counting him out until somebody gives me a solid reason too.

Can you ask Anik about Franklin Mcneal
Or is that over the line?
I’m interested in what’s next for Overeem/will Fedor take that fight if he beats Werdum.
thank god for MMA Nation.
The NHB Show is just bush league quality.
How this got on Arm Forces Radio, I haven’t a fucking clue.

I know how to make this picture better
Turn it into the ending for Inglorious Basterds where we lock these fans in, burn them and shoot them. Then the pic would be cool.

i think having unqualified judges is a bigger problem than not monitors. i’d like to see how it would go with truly qualified judges before making the jump to monitors
What qualifies someone to be a judge?
I’m betting the answer to that is part of the problem, with the other part being how many people who are highly qualified also want to do the job.
Considering some of the trouble brewed up by Big John’s move between refing→commenting→refing as well as having his own gym with MMA fighters training there, I can see where it might get complicated to find people who can judge that don’t have an either real or perceivable bias at this point in the sports development.
Just for the record
Joey Villasenor has been submitted only once – by David Terrell in his 4th fight. 10 of 12 wins by Jacare has been by submission. He’s only failed to finish Villasenor and Miller .
Hey guys, just a reminder to post any questions you have coming out of last night's Strikeforce show. We'll get to em as we continue to break the event down. Thanks.

I missed the first fifteen minutes of the show; and a bit a few minutes ago, so I’m not sure if it’s been covered. But has anyone talked about what last night did for Overeem’s rankings. And his chances of beating Fedor if that match is made? If I missed it, I’ll catch it on the podcast later in the week.

Antonio Silva: does his growth condition actually make it harder to rock/KO him? extra bone mass in his jaw and skull?
Odds of a Gilbert Melendez/Eddie Alvarez fight? Rebney said he’d love to make it and that is a co-promotion that makes sense.
Definitely interested in that fight. Don't know if we'll get to it with the Strikeforce talk, but will try.

I wonder if Rogers is timid a bit more because of getting KTFO by Fedor? He seemed more tentative than he did against Fedor. Backing up from the getgo, like he was scared of getting punched. I think getting a big KO can change a fighter when they’ve never been KOd before.

it’s hilarious how it’s just a foregone conclusion that M-1 is gonig to have contract issues again after the Werdum fight

Curse of Fedor?
Rogers,Arlovski and Sylvia all damaged goods now? Is losing to Fedor a career destroying event? Will Brett ruinite with the mohawk?
The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.
very good points by the NYC guy
i’ve been watching Bellator. their presentation is better. the commentary is better. it seems like Bellator is just more in-tune with the feel of MMA than Strikeforce
I think seeing some of the smaller shows they’ve done makes it hard for me to judge that one myself. I have liked some of their shows though. I like that round ring too.

That shove down did look a bit brutal. Looked like that same clip online from when he kicked that little girl down.

I thought a lot of that was rogers being off balance
Granted that was overeems leg kicks, but it wasn’t all Overeem power.
I think Luke was referring to how Overeem was controlling Rogers on the ground. He was literally just placing Rogers where he wanted him. It was pretty shocking when I first saw it, I used the term “ragdoll” which is now being used to describe the take-down itself. AND, for what it’s worth, Rogers’ trainer said the TD was the result of a trip. Of course, we probably shouldn’t believe him.

I’ve seen both gif angles on this site and I’m sure there was leverage used and all that good trip stuff; but it was mostly a toss and very brutal and ragdoll looking.

And with regards to the prelims, while it is unforgivable not at least have a highlight package of Beerbohm/Riberio, there is a reason they don’t show any of the prelims: those fighters are not Strikeforce fighters, they are local fighters signed for a one-time event to fill a card. The real Strikeforce prelims are the Challenger cards. It is purely a money saving scheme by them. They save $100,000 off their prelim purses and gain an additional $300,000 in license fee from Showtime. It’s sucks but it is a no-brainer.
And isn’t Lyle fighting Josh Thomson in San Jose?
