Lyoto wants his belt back!

"It’s a complicated moment for me, I’m looking for the mistakes I made in the fight, but on the other hand it’s great because I’m getting a lot of support from my fans".

"I was well trained and focused because our previous fight had a lot of controversies. I wanted to end this fight, I was feeling fast but a fight is a fight, there’s not much to say. Sometimes you are winning the fight but get caught and it’s over. I think I was winning the fight even though he was more aggressive".

"Merits to Shogun, he deserved it and is the new champion, but that’s not the end of the story, life goes on".

Leaving the top of his division, Lyoto dreams about the opportunity to fight for the title once again. "Whoever has the belt in the future, I hope to have that opportunity [again], but if it’s Shogun that will be even better, as the victory will be more satisfying".

"His punch connected and, in this division, it’s hard to absorb the blow. When it connects, it’s really difficult [to absorb it]"

"My goal is to fight for the title in a year or maybe even less, perhaps around 10 months or so. Regaining the belt is my new dream."

This Fan Shot was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.

i’m curious to see who they match him up with next. not much merit to him fighting the loser of rampage/rashad, since he’s already beaten rashad so convincingly.

doubt he’d fight rogerio, and they seem content to bring jones along slowly.

maybe another fight with franklin (once he beats chuck)? or forrest? can’t say either of those matchups interest me all that much.

by woooburn on May 14, 2010 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

I’ll say Forrest once he’s healed, since he was going to fight Lil’ Nog. I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave him Jones though, they wanted Jones to fight Lil’ Nog so I’m sure they want to give Jones bigger competitions now.

oh you’re right… completely forgot about that report of jones turning down the fight.

assuming jones beats the janitor, i’d much rather see that than griffin/machida. though that one could potentially set the stage for griffin/shogun 2 if forrest were to pull off the upset.

by woooburn on May 14, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

I’d be psyched for a Jones/Machida fight, that would answer all the questions the critics (me included) still have on Jones.

If Jones can takedown the Janitor at will and / or win the stand up it will answer a few more questions. The ability to decide where the fight takes place is the biggest asset in MMA, Jones seems to have that as well as anyone.

by truck on May 14, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

the Janitor is a step up in competition

but not quite the elite in LHW IMO. I jumped on Jones bandwagon recently after he beat Vera, but I’m still a bit skeptical to his striking skills against the elite. It just seems clumsy, and I’m very critical of its effectiveness against strikers such as Lyoto (granted, Vera is actually a great striker, but he always seems to fold to pressure).

by Orcus on May 14, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Striking is definately the biggest weakness for Jones. He is exciting, but he isn’t elite. The fact that he seems able to takedown anyone makes that less of a disadvantage though. Being able to chose a ground war is a luxury that not all fighters have.

Case in point…. Machida taking down Shogun and notbeing able to keep him there. If you can take someone down and keep them there or pound them out it is one more way to win.

by truck on May 14, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

ah

but all the elite fighters at LHW are very good at all aspects of the game, if Jones can take someone like Machida down and keep him down, that will say a lot about him (since no one ever did). But if he can also strike with the best, than I’d be fully committed to his bandwagon :p

From how quickly he has picked up what he already has on display

I think it is attainable…

Machida hasn’t really been wrestled by an elite wrestler yet… I’d be interested to see how that goes.

not much merit to him fighting the loser of rampage/rashad, since he’s already beaten rashad so convincingly.

Looks like your mind’s made up on the winner of that fight…

Yeah? Remember last year when Lebron won the MVP? Who took home the real MVP? You know, the one the comes with a damn championship?

by zakkree on May 14, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is correct in that judgement.

I will be floored and in complete and utter disbelief if Rashad wins that fight.

In my mind it would be a bigger upset than Edgar Penn.

by truck on May 14, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

There's alot of negative factors at play for Rampage right now

that in my opinion it wouldn’t be all that much of a surprise. We all know Rampage can be a little uneven, he almost lost a decision to Keith Jardine the last time he fought which also happened to be ages ago.

"With great power comes great responsibility" -Spiderman's Uncle

by Fake Emcee on May 14, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

If Rampage is in any kind of fighting shape I think he takes it.

Unless age has finally caught up with him.

Rampage wins by second round KO. I don’t really see Rashad beating him anywhere and having any advantages other than speed.

by truck on May 14, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He has far too many negative variables

I think Rashad has the overall speed, footwork, ground game and generally annoying style to take Rampage. Probably decision. After seeing Rampage lose to Griffin and barely get by Jardine, I just don’t see how he wins against a healthy and head clear Rashad.

by SimplePsych on May 14, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

punching him square in the mouth is how he will win. Jokes aside i dont get this rashad foot work thing. Its a bunch of useless movement and dancing. It can throw some fighters off but a guy like Rampage who goes for a KO and does not worry to much about what the other fighter is doing Rashads footwork/ river dance will be useless.

by Riley_96 on May 14, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, he goes for the KO and doesn't get annoyed by movement?

Like he did against Griffin and Jardine then right?. Come on, make some excuses like your girlfriend does so well.

UFC should give Thiago Silva to Lyoto

This fight already happened and Silva got destroyed. I see no reason to give Lyoto a fight with someone coming of a loss, granted Machida did just lose, it was a title fight. Silva Machida 2 makes no sense at this point in time to me.

But today Thiago gave an interview saying he laughed at Lyoto’s loss. So Machida could destroy him again.

I think this is a blessing in disguise for Machida.

If you always win (even if it’s close) you never have the need or desire to change what your doing. Now he’s felt a loss that can’t be questioned and has that drive for the belt again. I think he’s going to come back better than ever. Huge props to Shogun though, I though Machida was gonna take it.

my sentiments exactly

… I was a bit shocked when Machida lost in the fashion he did, but it will ultimately be better for him in the long run. I really thought he was going to come out and smoke Shogun, but he did’nt. He is going to come back and be a much better version of himself.

Machida vs Griffin makes the most sense to me.

Machida vs Rampage would be a good one if Rampage somehow loses to Rashad, I don’t see that happening though. Rich Franklin is a solid option too if he beat Chuck.

I doubt rey would throw him in there with Jon Jones or Liddell and I also doubt we will se a rematch with Rashad or Silva. I don’t think Anderson or Little Nog are in play.

by truck on May 14, 2010 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

If Frankin pulls together a couple wins, I’d give him Machida.

by RS26 on May 14, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

You can youtube that fight, Machida whooped on Ace already. If he’s cleared medically Lil Nog would be a good matchup.

by Brian Burdios on May 14, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Ace wants to get into the title picture before he gets too old

and the vast majority of UFC fans haven’t seen the first fight. I don’t think it would be a hard sell. Machida could get a win over a beloved vetran and Frankiln could get redemption and a legit cause for a title fight.

You are right though Franklin vs Little Nog would be fun too.

by truck on May 14, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Machida vs Brandon Vera would be a good fight I think.

Machida would destroy Forrest but could possibly get destroyed by Jones. That guy is an animal. I don’t know why people criticise Jones. He’s won all of fights convincingly (except the DQ), what more can he do? Just because fighter X doesn’t do well against fighter Y doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t beat fighter Z.

by Ilias on May 14, 2010 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

What

Machida loses to the consensus # 2 and now you want to give him #21? That is WAY too much of a step down.

by SES 84 on May 14, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Forget Vera! Vera right now is at best the gatekeeper for the LHW division. Does Vera beat Rampage/Rashad/Silva/Lil Nog/Forest/Bones…..Machida IMO is still top 2 in LHW division. Machida will be back.

by Brian Burdios on May 14, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

oddly enough

I’m interested in seeing Machida vs. Griffin just to see if the latter can outwork him (cardio + pace) and if Machida’s top game will have improved.

by Chortles on May 14, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

But Vera is a Muay Thai guy… I think it would be good to see machida fight another dangerous striker… or a couple more dangerous strikers before we see a shogun vs machida 3. As much as I am a fan of machida i don’t really fancy another fight with Shogun for at least another year.

by Ilias on May 15, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Another thing is, I think Dana will want machida to fight at least another 3 more times before he gets a title shot.

UFC 98 was what made me into a hardcore mma fan. I never regularly checked for MMA news until then, but was always a big fan of Machida’s style so I was really rooting for him. The performance that Machida put on, his emotional reaction, as well as an all-around great PPV, made that my favorite PPV event of all time.

by frosnt1 on May 14, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest and Franklin

Those two guys make a ton of sense. A clear Co-headliner, the winner gets in title contention, maybe needs one more win.

by SES 84 on May 14, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

Machida and a new Title shot

Machida’s chance at a title shot will depend a lot on how Shogun does. Machida is going to have to show some new stuff before I’m ready to see Machida Shogun III.

If someone beats Shogun though then Machida’s name will instantly pop back up assuming he has 1-2 wins.

by SES 84 on May 14, 2010 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

hmm

before YOU ARE ready?

Good thing its not up to you.

by Ave Imperator on May 14, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

No I'm not dana in disguise

but two things.
1. I don’t think Dana will rush to have that fight happen. He’d much rather set up fights with any of the English speaking LHW (Couture, Forrest, Jones, Franklin, Rampage or Rashad)
2. Do you want to see Shogun Machida 3 soon? I don’t I think Machida needs to add to his game, he either needs to be a lot more comfortable with a Muy Thai like game or he needs to improve his top control. I actually think improving top control would be a good option for him.

by SES 84 on May 14, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones would be an awesome matchup

If he holds serve and beats the Janitor, he should be knocking on the door of the top five in the division, and a perfect matchup for the former champion. A win would give Jones a strong argument for number one contender status (and give Machida a good argument for another title shot) while a loss wouldn’t be too terrible for either of them. Good fight.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Shogun

I know this post has to do with Machida and who he should fight next but i’m far less curious who Machida will fight and far more curious to see Shogun fight ANDERSON SILVA!

I’d love to see Silva get his ass kicked but if he comes out and fights how he can he could hold 2 belts at once and keep fighting the top of the 205 division. I’d love to see that. But personally I think Dana is not going to give him a shot at holding two belts until AS proves he can finish people.

Dana said that after Chael and Vitor, if Andy is victorious in both title defenses, that he’ll need to vacate his belt and move permanently to 205.

Anderson will move up to 205 and after Sonnens lesson and he will win the LHW title

Inside information from someone that is very close to Ed Soares. He said that Anderson is done with MW’s after Sonnen. And when he saw Shogun win he saw his next great challenge, and that if he doesn’t get a shot after the Sonnen win and the Evans/Jackson winner gets theirs, he will opt out of his contract and go elswhere. AND he has no more interest in Belfort, and if anyone campaigns for him to fight Belfort he will develop more nagging injuries and keep playing games with the UFC. Bet on it!

Hmm

I did notice that his offense against Rashad Evans once he dropped Evans in R2 was in boxing terms, rather sloppy — but not an issue back then because by then Evans was backpedaling and seemed to have abandoned all pretense of countering,

It would make more sense for him to rather integrate techniques from boxing (like, ya know, keeping his hands up or developing a jab) into his existing stances and methodology.

by Chortles on May 14, 2010 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

i think he can be the champ at 205 again but not if shogun is champ. i just hope shogun nailed his ass on the chin not out of spite. i just hope lyoto doesn’t have a glass jaw.

to be fair the punch that dropped Machida was behind the ear and was alot like the punch Serra put GSP out with. Lyoto was probablt still good to go in his head (not being out cold) but his body was not responding to what he wanted it to do and thus the follow up GnP put him in La La land.
