Strikeforce Heavy Artillery Preview: Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Joey Villasenor Clash in Middleweight Action
The lone middleweight contest out of the twelve-fight inventory of battles taking place at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery will pit DREAM veteran and five-time World Jiu-Jitsu champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (11-2-0; 1 NC, 1-0 SF) against EliteXC and Strikeforce staple Joey Villasenor (27-6, 2-1 SF) in a match-up of contrasting styles. Souza is coming off an impressive victory over former UFC fighter Matt Lindland at Strikeforce: Evolution in which he submitted Lindland via arm triangle choke in the first round. Villasenor is riding a four-fight win streak with wins over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, Phil Baroni, Ryan Jensen, and Riki Fukuda
Stylistically, Villasenor is primarily a striker with enough wrestling know-how and Brazilian jiu-jitsu acumen to maintain a stand-up position throughout a fight. Souza, on the other hand, is more of a ground fighter with an improving stand-up game. Obviously his Brazilian jiu-jitsu credentials scream out to anyone who's listening that a fight is much more likely to hit the floor if Souza is involved, but he's not your standard mixed martial arts grappler. Where other fighters fail in positioning and submission knowledge, Souza excels, and his physical strength truly sets him apart from many of his divisional counterparts.
Villasenor is going to have a laborious time trying to stop Souza's takedown attempts in this battle. While he's been successful in the past, Souza is downright tenacious in his abilities. He's very good at shooting for takedowns, but he's also highly successful in using the clinch to throw opponents to the ground and transition to various positions that allow him to set up submissions. His physical strength also plays well with his improving striking, and we may yet see a day when Souza becomes a knockout threat.
I don't see this fight ending well for Villasenor. He'll have to worry constantly about the takedown, and that'll more than likely affect his stance and striking in this fight. He isn't exactly an accomplished wrestler or grappler, and I find it hard to believe he'll hold his own against Souza's strength. Look for Souza to plant Villasenor on his back and work his way to a submission rather quickly.
With the victory, Souza should probably sit at the top of the weight class in line for a title shot. Against whom? We don't know, and it'll probably involve some sort of fight to crown a new middleweight champion when Jake Shields makes his way to the UFC after his contract expires. I suppose Dan Henderson or Robbie Lawler make sense as fighters who could be thrown into the mix.

Black House
he is gonna roll joey into a submission in less than 3 min. Jacare is easily becomming my favorite submission artist in mma.
Since when was Jacare training at Black House? He’s definitely not on their website.

Idon’t think he trains there full time, but he has gone there to train and they have brought him in to help train others.
He trains with Anderson from time to time. Also helped him with his BJJ before the fights with Leites and Maia.

Jacare is the crown jewel of Strikeforce’s roster.

I agree and I hope Strikeforce gives him a rematch against Mousasi, or a fight with Hendo.

I remember when Mousasi was in that short list as well. It just shows how quickly things can change.

Mousasi was one of my favourite prospects, but the Lawal fight proved that is all he was… Also, I really like Mousasi at MW, but I didn’t think he should have moved up or was ready to.
I really like Mousasi, but he is clearly not a top 10 LHW… I never thought he was though and I think that fight proved it. Too much hype too soon.
The hype is fine, but he just doesn’t have the size/strength/explosiveness/cardio at 205 yet. For everything Mousasi does well, S&C is not one of them. He should really do training camps in Montreal if he wants to maximize his potential.
He lost a decision to one of the other best prospects in mma, so how does that prove he was overrated? Because he couldn’t stop the takedowns of the fighter with the best wrestling credentials in mma? Some people dislike Mo so much it colors their view of Mousasi’s performance.
how does that prove he was overrated?
Because people were prematurely putting him in the top 10 at LHW and he got worked by someone who hasn’t shown a lot more than Phil Davis. I am a big fan of Lawal, Mousasi and even Phil Davis, but IMO none of these guys should be considered top 10 at this point.
I think Mo has shown a lot more than Phil Davis at this point in his career, if only because his striking looks so much better than “Mr. Wonderful’s”. He toyed with Mike Whitehead while standing toe-to-toe and only had to resort to a ground game against Mousasi because his kickboxing skills are phenomenal. There are very few fighters I would pick over those two. Jones, Mo, and Mousasi (and then Davis) are the future of the LHW division.
The future is looking athletic and explosive!

Did Mousasi show anything in that fight to make you think Phil Davis or even Tito Ortiz couldn’t do the same thing?
I know Mo has great wrestling, but he did really have to fight for any of the takedowns. He just grabbed Mousasi and fell to the ground.
There is no doubt in my mind that those guys are fighters to look out for and possibly the future of the sport, but I always had questions about Mousasi and IMO Lawal answered them.
Mousasi may be a top 10 LHW within the next year or so, I just don’t think he is there yet.
Part of the reason King Mo was able to take him down so easily was that was part of Mousasi’s game plan. Listen to the pre-fight interviews, Mousasi said he’d be fighting off his back. His plan was to punish Mo from the bottom and get him tired to finish him off later, so why waste energy working to keep the fight standing? And the strategy would have worked, if King Mo didn’t get a second wind while Mousasi ended up gassing. This is one of the few fights that went exactly as both fighters planned and yet everybody acts as surprised.

Jacare!
Can’t wait for this. Joey is a tough. legit guy, but I think Jacare has titles in his future. And man, his stand up looked good last time out, just hope he doesn’t fall in love with it.
And no mention of Mayhem 3 as a title fight if Jake bolts?
Also, has anyone told Roger he only has a little over 24 hours to pull out? Hope he doesn’t get hurt weighing in.

I find it funny that Jacare doesent have the savage hype behind him. He looked good agains Mousasi. He just got hit with a epic upkick which had the same change of landing as a bird pooping on your head while going for a walk. Makes you wounder what if….

![Tim Kennedy speaks to Sherdog Radio about his loss to "Jacare" Souza and his plans to KO Melvin Manhoef on March 5th at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Feijao:
"That [Jacare] fight was totally crap," Kennedy said. "I sat there for 25 minutes and stalked the guy around the cage as he would peck me with the jab or throw an overhand right. Repeat for 25 minutes. That sucks. I, as a fan, would get bored with that fight. For crying out loud, come forward and fight me. You’re the greatest grappler on the planet. So I stuff you on a couple of takedowns, maybe try for a third one. If I take you down, maybe try to submit me. Don’t sit there and ride out a decision doing some fancy footwork for some so-called judges that are boxing judges. That’s stupid. If you’re going to win a title, come into the cage to fight."
"I’m not that kind of fighter," he explained. "I want to fight. I know everybody cares about who gets the W, but the fans want to see exciting fights. … Of course I like winning, but I like fighting. Fighting’s the essence of the sport, and that’s what people pay to see. If I’m going to take him [Manhoef] down, I’m going to pick him up and I’m going to slam him. I’m not going to stay tight for a close submission. I want to knock him out. That’s what fans like seeing and that’s what I like delivering."
