I don’t see how its surprising that Vera (primarily a Muay Thai fighter) is better at Muay Thai than he is at Karate.
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
He's better at Muay Thai than Karate for sure,
but I think the general concept is right. Karate kicks are generally faster, but produces, less force since it’s the foot, and not the shin that hits the target.

no i agree
it looks like he intends to throw the muay thai kick harder

If you knew anything about how to deliver news you wouldn’t make a comment like this.

That was incredibly fascinating
STX may be on to something (but with savate – not karate – and muay thai). Thanks Anton.
I think there's a longer version where he also did leg kicks.
so if anyone knows where we can watch it…..

Brandon is transitioning....
from the difference of being a contender….to having his face broken by Mr. Jones.
The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.
I don’t want to be grumpy, but this presentation sucked.
Vera showed two MT head kicks, one with the foot (most common) and second the shin (less common, because you have to be closer to your opponent which could end up with hard counter. Height of you opponent also matters in choice of the kick).
Karate kicks are performed with different technique (power comes from hip rotation and leg snap).
"- His nickname is "fly", so I look forward to see him fly out of the ring after I punch him.
- He says that I'm known as a "fly"...but flies like shit, so I'm gonna be all over you."
Yeah, it wasn’t clear to me why the karate kick would be inherently faster, or why the MT kick would be inherently more powerful.
I know nothing
I’ve heard that muay thai kicks are with more of a straight leg, and that karate emphasizes snapping from the knee. Can anyone confirm?
And yeah, if you do the same technique but hit with the shin instead of the foot, it seems pretty damn likely you’ll get more impact. This show is all fluff.
Use all ten points.
yes
basically thats true, Karate has more emphasis on higher kicks (body to head) and Muay Thai emphasizes lower kicks (body to legs)

I agree that this presentation was lacking. Yes, there is science behind it, but there are so many holes in their experiment, there’s no way this is accurate. Though the general concept of hitting with the shin vs the foot is probably correct.
Yeah, Vera basically puts less hip movement in the karate kick, which makes it faster and less powerful. It’s hardly a difference between Karate and Muay Thai kick. Although the idea is correct.

i'm enough of a nerd
that i think the idea of this show is awesome, but they cut so many corners, and add so much fluff that it’s pretty unwatchable. there’s like 25 seconds of info in the 3 minutes of video, and, it seems, they don’t even get the core stuff right. this could be a discussion of what happens when a muay thai striker doesn’t range his kick right and ends up hitting with the foot, but they try to dress it up…
Use all ten points.
Wow that was pretty cool
Where did this air? On Sportscenter? Or just on MMA live?
Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

Or was it just on Sports science? But i thought that show was on the Discovery Channel?

I read it was there, but since I don’t have ESPN 2, so I wouldn’t know for sure. haha. :)

This show makes me sad
So much potential, but such crappy execution. They basically said that MT and Karate kicks are the same, except for the part of the foot that contacts. I’m fairly sure that’s a gross simplification, ignoring things like the role the quads play in snapping the lower leg or holding it ridged, or even the way the hips roll when setting up the kicks. There’s much more to it than just striking area. It’s entirely likely that Vera wasn’t throwing the karate kick correctly, since, most people don’t. That’s why there was such fascination with Machida when he first became popular; here was a karate guy throwing kicks that actually hurt.
Maybe my standards are too high, since I’m surrounded by stuff like this all the time at work, but the episode when they tried to establish whether a large mass at low acceleration generates more force than a small mass at high acceleration made me facepalm pretty badly.
The shin vs foot thing is silly anyway. Muay Thai hits with both and so do some styles of Karate like Kyokushin. Its the chamber leg(karate, tkd, etc) vs spinning around(Muay Thai) that is the fundamental difference. Though the way they tested is absurd, I would say that generally Muay Thai is a bit stronger while Karate is a bit faster.
My bad
Sorry I’m not an amazing bloodyelbow contributer. Maybe I’ll post up sports science videos from last weeks MMA Live too.
Dicks.
