MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: Kenny Florian Talks ESPN's MMA Live and Gray Maynard, John Dodson Ready for Jesse Riggleman, UFC 113 Wrap-Up
For those that missed last night's show, it was large and in charge.
We started off the event by discussing the cutting of Kimbo Slice from the UFC. My views are well-known on the matter, but others don't necessarily agree. The very esteemable Beau Dure called in and argued Slice should not have been cut. His thoughts here. We also took a ton of calls.
I then interviewed John "The Magician" Dodson as he is set to tangle with Jesse "Mountain Man" Riggleman at UWC 8 on May 22nd (for info and tickets go to UWCMMA.com). As I said on the air, Dodson vs. Riggleman is a superb, superb flyweight fight and one every true MMA fan should take the time to watch. There are very few organizations in North America grooming flyweight talent like the UWC and this is fight of contenders to Pat Runez's title that should not be missed. (Disclosure: I am the color commentator for the UWC). Expect more UWC fighters on the show next week.
I also spoke to UFC lightweight contender and ESPN's MMA Live analyst Kenny "Ken-Flo" Florian. We talked to Florian about everything under the sun: MMA Live's first time doing pre- and post-fight shows, all of the results from UFC 113, gameplanning for Gray Maynard at UFC 118 and his upcoming local seminars/appearance at Washington Combat on May 15th (Disclosure: I'm the color commentator for this Washington Combat event).
Those interviews were followed by a ton of calls. Most folks wondered about the cutting of Paul Daley. I firmly believe part of what's motivating White to jettison Daley from the UFC ranks is the desire to get the sport legalized in Ontario. Were the regulatory environment not so hostile or precarious, it's at least arguable Daley might've not been thrown overboard. Then again, his poor attitude post-fight with Dana White probably would've sealed his fate no matter the regulatory situation.
Last, but certainly not least, we took a few more calls and James Kimball did "The Closing Bell", walking us through the week in mixed martial arts. That included the announcement of Fedor vs. Werdum in June, fights for upcoming UFC PPVs as well as UFC on Versus 2 and Bellator results.
Podcasts can be found here. I'm on Twitter as is Othello as is James Kimball. We're also on Facebook. Thanks for your support and SPREAD THE WORD.

Proof that expertise in one subject often comes at the detriment of other subjects
Luke Thomas thinks Stone Temple Pilots rock harder than Judas Priest.
le sigh
Well
I’m not a STP fan per se. I like the opening of Dead and Bloated, but that’s about it.
As for Judas Preist, they’re abysmal. I think they’re horrible, but I realize I’m going to be completely outvoted.

From the comments and the Geddy Lee stuff, you dont seem to be a fan of the falsettos, which Halford is pretty much a golden god of (or was for many years, he cant really hit the same notes in Painkiller or Jawbreaker anymore).
but srsly dude, songs like The Ripper, A Touch of Evil, Electric Eye, Screaming For Vengeance are legendary. Not to mention the innovative guitar work that still entertains me.
If you like them I’m not here to take it away. To each his own, I just wish I didn’t have to deal with a corporate CBS decision that dictated what I can and can’t play.

What Kenny says about wrestling defense is so true. Every wrestler knows that your lines of defense in wrestling goes 1.hands 2. forearms 3. Head 4. and then finally as a last resort hips. If you let a wrestler get to deep it doesn’t matter how good your hips are, you are going down.

I missed the damn show but I’m glad you’re putting up the segments afterwards. I don’t know if you covered it (I’ll listen later) but is there any justification for cutting Daley after a cheap unsportsmanlike shot and trying to sign Jake Shields RIGHT AFTER the Gracie Camp brawl?
I know I should’ve asked yesterday.
I just tried it again. Works just fine for me. What browser are you using?

mine is working
but it sounds like there is something wrong with the file, he’s talking about the main event and around 12:00 to 12:10 minute mark, it sounds like the file was cropped and he’s all of the sudden talking about fighting in his home town.
Eu, sou brasileiro, com muito orgulho, com muito amor♫
June 10th can't come soon enough, for another star is needed!
Is there anyway...
To listen to the show as one mp3/download/stream? Instead of having it broken up in segments?
I'm kicking myself for not responding to Luke's
“Are you one of those Jersey Shore meatheads?” with “Nah, I’m an elitist”

Luke don’t you think Rampage would have taken Rua down at will in their fight in Pride if Shoguns takedown defence was as bad as you say? I think Shogun has the most devastating Muay Thai clinch in the world at 205, Rampage to this day says he’s the best he’s ever fought.
Would Rampage have taken him down at will?
I don’t know about at will, but Rampage is a far better underhook/defense wrestler than offensive takedown machine. It’s not often he seeks out to place fighters on their back. He’s at heart more committed to exchanging on the hands.
Much of Rampage’s wrestling pedigree comes from his bodlylock slams (which he has slowly moved away from) and from stopping attempts that were deep on his hips like against Randleman. Those were just epic, epic displays of strength and control.
But if he doesn’t elect to take a fighter down as a point of strategy, then no, he can’t take anyone down at will.
I also believe whatever problems he was having with Colin Oyama affected his performance, although to what degree we’ll never know.
So I certainly think Rampage can take Rua down if he likes, but he’s not good at holding position on the ground and he doesn’t have a particularly great shot. He’s more of a natural freestyle power wrestler…when he wants to be…which isn’t that often anymore.

Good show.
i like your thoughts on the punch. I think it’s a combination of all of the things mentioned (sanctioning elsewhere, Nashville, TV deals, Daley’s response) that lead to the immediate cutting. If any one of those things were different, maybe he survives, but they weren’t. Also, you dead on in that it’s easy to single daley out more so than any one individual in the melee.
As for crowning Shogun’s ass, The only successful UFC LHW title defenses since 2007 are Rampage over Hendo, and machida Rua I. The UFC hype machine got burned by the “Machida era” and I think everyone is a little gun shy about crowning a king of 205, and rightfully so.
Also, about the types of fans that call in, it probably also has to do with the fact that there is probably very little crossover between sports radio listeners and mma fans. The gap between sports fans and mma fans only is shrinking, and i think the people that call in to sports radio are going to be out of the gene pool shortly.
On the Call in Fans
I listen to a bunch of sports radio, so here are a couple potential causes.
1. I think a lot of the callers are BE users who tend to be a bit more calm.
2. People tend to think that the hardcore MMA fan is a raging lunatic, but I don’t think that’s the case, its just that the MMA fan has been forced to forums where raging lunatics have dominated (it doesn’t matter the type of forum).
3. I think at the end of the day being a fight fan is a little different than being a sports fan. If you like the Red Skins you know how many awful personnel moves, coaching decisions, poor draft pics etc. you’ve had to live through? We are literally talking seasons and countless games. In fight sports, if a fighter loses a few times, you’ll move on to another fighter, and you’ll have other fighters to root for. Unfortunately in team sports a fan is forced to suffer…That’s just a theory, but I think it explains why we didn’t see the same level of anger.
I listen to many MMA shows...
There are a lot of callers that make me wonder if they fell asleep on hold. MMA Junkie has decent callers, but they do a bit too much shtick for my tastes. Of course Sherdog has Brandon from Jersey, who’s hit or miss; a good deal of the other callers are terrible. MMA Nation hasn’t had that many snoozers, that I can recall.
Callers should have a list of talking points and keep it sharp and brief. And stop napping while waiting on hold.
Good points Luke, i know Jacksons training has come on no end since his Pride days aswell to be fair to him. I’m probably biased because as a Shogun mark i used to get pissed some people only knew him for his original two nightmare appearances in the UFC and thought it was MMA’s equivalent of Douglas vs Tyson when he beat Chuck. You probably have a more well rounded view on his skills than me!
Regarding the punch Shogun knocked Machida down with, that overhand was one that he’d thrown many times in their first fight, and connected with. I find it interesting how effective that punch was on Machida, and how Machida got caught with it again. Shogun clearly has Machida’s timing down, as he caught Machida at the precise time Machida was attacking the supposed “Kyo.” For all those that are saying that was a lucky punch: NOT a lucky punch. Shogun just has Machida’s number.
Good show dude.
Great show. Anyway you can get them to let you have a 3-hour slot? Things just feel a little rushed, especially when there’s just been a big event. Too much MMA to cover in 2 hours.
In regards to the punch and why Dana reacted as quickly as he did I think it’s about sending a message to the fighters, fans, and media. Strikeforce seemed to wait for someone else to tell them what to do (be it the athletic commission, fans, TV partners, etc). White came out with a decision before the discussion even had a chance to get rolling. Within 15 minutes of throwing the punch Daley was gone. There’s no question of who is in charge at the UFC.
