Randy Couture

Seriously? They actually want shogun to have an era :O, surprises me.

by Vonk on May 10, 2010 8:43 AM EDT reply actions

yeah

I don’t get it either, I guess they want to give Randy one last chance but seriously, there’s a lot more people deserving right now.

A thank you from Shogun's management?

I havent read much since the fight but wasn’t there a rumor Randy was going to step in for Shogun had he not been able to compete? maybe it was more of a favor than it seems and this is shogun’s teams way of giving Randy a thank you for doing so.

I realize everyone wants to fight a legend, but this fight will not be competitive. I really have no desire to pay for this fight at all. I like Randy, but he hasn’t done anything in the LHW division at this juncture to warrant this type of leap up in competition.

Poor Forrest is all I can say.

Yeah, Forrest needs to get a couple more wins against decent (doesn’t need to be great) opposition and then a rematch would be cool. Also, great avatar.

I think the injury is a blessing for Forrest, I don’t see how he could beat Rogerio.

Who is calling for him to Fight Couture?

Who is asking for this fight in anyway shape or form? Randy is in no way at the same level as Shogun and would be a waste of a championship fight. I would say the winner of Rampage and Rashad could get the next title fight. That is something I would pay to watch.

UFC

had Randy Couture on stand by in case Shogun could not fight for the belt, this is more ‘real’ than not, because let’s face it, it would do huge sales.

No about the huge pay-per-view numbers that Randy would attract anymore. If the card had a very strong co-main event then that would help.

I still think Randy is a big draw, but I’m assuming, if you have more info on his latest PPV buys I hear you :p

No I don’t have any more info than you. I’m just echoing a lot of sentiments I hear from other mma fans. Randy is starting the get a little long in the tooth for some people. I definitely could be wrong though. No doubt the UFC hype machine could make this into the biggest thing since Ali-Fraser.

don't forget though

that who pays the bills are mostly the casual fans, and I think they’d love this fight, us here are a minority of the pie (the ones who hates this fight, and for good reason).

i think casual (new) fans will relate randy with a dismal stretch of main events from UFC 102-109

and we’re confusing “drawing power” with “marketability” — Randy’s great, he speaks English, he’s also tremendously overvalued along with Tito, Chuck, Franklin and Hughes as an era of Dana’s favorite champs.

by LBo on May 10, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO

casual fans are not necessarily new fans, I’m sure there are casual fans from the first season of TUF. drawing power goes hand in hand with marketability, and I don’t agree with Randy having dismal main events, his fights with Big Nog, Vera and Coleman were great (though I thought he lost the Vera fight), but entertaining and skilled nonetheless. Even if Randy were to have lost all three fights though, he’d still bring in viewers whenever he fights, all those guys you listed (with the exception of Franklin) have huge fanbases. they’re like Wandy for me, it doesn’t matter how many times they lose, people will always watch them fight.

the fights would have made good secondary headliners, but three main events for a non-champ?

I’ll admit equating newbie fans to casual fans is off-base, but i don’t think i’m going out on a limb in saying that those were disappointing as finales to their respective main cards purely in that we weren’t watching divisional champs or even immediate contenders fighting. Even if Randy himself was exciting. Which he sometimes was.

This was a period of extremely low buyrates and widespread media speculation that the UFC was jumping the shark. It’s for that reason, not my criticism of the fights themselves, that I question whether there’s even a marketing rationale for this matchup.

Now RAMPGAGE vs Shogun coming off the momentum of the A-Team movie exposure, a historical Chute Boxe beef and hopefully an impressive stoppage of Rashad? THAT could do some buys imo.

by LBo on May 10, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Why rematch Forrest?? Shogun is the champ. Forrest would need to actually start winning again and build up to a title shot to fight Shogun again. Honestly, the Shogun that beat Machida would absolutely decimate Forrest Griffin. Forrest didn’t even look very good against Tito Ortiz. Shogun has bigger fish to fry. Shogun-Forrest 2 would be a waste of a fight. I would much rather see Shogun vs. Rampage/Evans or even… dare I say it…. Shogun vs. Anderson Silva.

by ManicPreacher on May 10, 2010 9:44 AM EDT reply actions

Let Shogun Defend his belt

Shogun Should have to defend his belt a couple of times before he fights Anderson Silva. Have Shogun prove he can be at the top of his game at each fight not just this one. I think after a couple of title defenses Shogun would be ready for Silva, right now I would think Silva would be Shogun, but this is mma and anything can happen.

by ludakrish on May 10, 2010 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

I would much rather see A. Silva vs. Shogun. But in all honesty I think Couture could present some real stylistic problems for Shogun. Shogun doesn’t have great take-down defense and Randy could certainly exploit that.

by Niles on May 10, 2010 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

If Couture vs. Shogun is what the UFC feels they need to do before they will do A. Silva vs. Shogun, then I am all for it.

by Niles on May 10, 2010 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

Shogun would probably defend his belt twice before the Silva fight is made. Dana has said he’s still pissed at Silva. He said Silva would have to fight Sonnen and Belfort before even considering moving to LHW again.

As for the Couture fight… with Randy’s questionable chin these days, Shogun would kill him. If this fight was two years ago, maybe it would be competitive, but not now. The Vera fight is a good example: he had Couture hurt badly but couldn’t put him away. Shogun is not like that. The way he pounced on Machida was sick. His killer instinct is back and he would murder Randy. However, I can see the UFC making that fight, because a) he’s a legend, and Shogun destroying the legend would be good business b) Randy’s star is fading, probably doesn’t have too many fights left, so they might as well leverage that into something useful for them, and c) Might give some stability to the LHW belt by allowing Shogun a surefire winable title defense first before moving onto bigger fish.

by pud333 on May 10, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Randy really wants this fight. He wants to retire in the cage after going for a title one last time.

by Bob Boblaw on May 10, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

SIlva vs Shogun is 2 fights away minimum

Silva has his title defense against chael at 117. Shogun will prob fight around 119/120, (though they could certainly fit him into 118 and make it a super card). That fight will more than likely be against winner of rampage/rashad. After Silva fights Chael, the MW div will need some time to sort out a contender again so the timing works pretty well for Silva to go back to LHW for the belt

by Cocytus on May 10, 2010 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

I have no interest in seeing Shogun fight Rampage or Evans. Shogun would demolish Rampage just like the first time. I think Evans’ wrestling gives him a better chance against Shogun, but it just seems weird if he were to get a shot after how badly Machida beat him.

by Niles on May 10, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m just going off of the latest news from Dana and Co concerning rampage/rashad fight.

by Cocytus on May 10, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt that Shogun/Silva fight will happen. Silva have said that he would be upset if he’d have to fight Shogun. Also I doubt that he would fight for the belt in a division where LilNog and Machida are competing.

by dancingChicken on May 10, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I know Silva adamantly refuses to fight Machida (and Big nog if he ever went to HW), but he’s open to the idea of fighting Lil Nog.

I’ve never heard anything from Silva or Soares about not wanting to fight Shogun.

Also, Machida’s father stated that given the right circumstances, Machida and Silva would eventually fight, just to see who is better. Granted, the father isn’t necessarily an authority in this case, but its an interesting hint.

by Cocytus on May 10, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Silva has never said he’s open to fight Lil’ Nog to my understanding, that was Lyoto who would be open to fight Lil’ Nog if it came to that (and for the belt). He’d fight Shogun though.

Someone stop it

This is like putting a 75-win NY Mets team in the World Series because of the NY ratings. DW can’t get all “protecting the sport” with say Kimbo and then turn around and do this.

I know MMA math doesn’t work and the whole development yadda yadda, but Couture barely beats Vera and is borderline title contender, Jon Jones owns Vera’s soul and is 3 fights away?

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on May 10, 2010 11:15 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Exactly.

That Vera/Couture fight was actually there for Vera to display his ability to finish a big-name guy and move up in the rankings. Randy won, and I guess there’s something to be said about Randy winning, but he didn’t win decisively at all. In MMA fuzzy-math, that win barely registers as a win. Let’s see Randy win 2 or 3 times before he’s in the same consideration as Rampage/Rashad.

I’d like to see Forrest win at least 2 fights before getting a shot at Shogun.

WHAT CRAZY PILLS have people here talking about "BUILD UP FIGHTS" for a CHAMP?!?

Contenders get build-up fights!

Champion is the f*cking definition of ready to fight the best. That’s why he gets to wear that silly belt around. Randy’s not close to the best, he’s not even a top 10 at LHW.

Shogun could knock his ass out on the walkout to his actual next title defense. This is a total farce and I can’t even fathom how anyone sees it otherwise.
