That’s re-goddamn-diculous. Wow. I’m so impressed by people who have the ability to create things like this because I could have worked on the same skills for my entire 30 years and never come close to producing anything this good.

I've been spending too much time at Polycount
I immediately jumped to the conclusion it was a sculpt or a gradient mesh piece – But completely missed the painting angle! Great painting and thanks for the WIP versions!
And that ScritchAndScratch feller continues to be my favorite!
THIS IS AWESOME
i have done digital design in years and i wanted to get software and get back into for my bday, and this has definitely inspired me to do so. What programs did MayFong use? the detail in the face is outstanding
Even when I'm laying on my back I'm never backing down

I think it’s written there. photoshop? if I remember correctly.

Limewire?
welcome to 2005
"It’s going to be like sex with a grizzly bear, you know, a lot of scratching and growling on both sides." - Don Frye
hey now...
i have saved over 5000 dollars in software so you take that back. i have cs4, illustrator cs4, adobe acrobat, sketchup 7, autodesk autocad 2009, autodesk revit 2010, as well as a bunch of other crap most people havent ever heard of.
so I am in no way ashamed of using limeire….hell id still be using napster if it could save me that kind of money.

I'm skeptical of P2P
That is, the “Napster-style” P2P applications… anyone remember the story of a “fake” Madonna MP3 that instead of her singing was her cursing at music pirates? Or alternately, the fake erotic computer game installer whose terms of service actually state that the program will scour your computer for your personal information, put it on a Web site, and then only remove it if you publicly apologize for attempting to pirate an “eroge”?
YEAH…
torrents.
get out of your cybercave on to the new(er) age. haha.

Exactly *coughcough*
IIRC, “Napster-type” P2P applications have WAY slower download speeds on average than… well, torrents.
unless he's still using dial-up,
and in that case, it won’t matter anyway. haha.

i just upgraded from a 14.4k ro a 28.8k dial-up modem!
so suck it.
by Opposites Attack on May 4, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions
its so fast that it only takes 8 minutes to download
a 3 minute song…..its the future of downloading…..seriously, this modem hasnt even come out yet to the general public.

Are you a drafter. I am….and I could get $5,000 for turning in someone with pirated AutoCAD…Muh-ahahah…But then I’d have to turn in myself too (Sketch-up is the shit, way better than Revit
I am a designer, not a drafter.
but yes, architecture is my profession….And I have to disagree that sketchup is way better than revit. WAR REVIT, WAR!

CS5 is already out actually. I guess you want CS3 because it is cheaper tho (being sooo obsolete and all….not really)
I have CS3. Wish they wouldn’t bring out new versions so quickly all the time when they aren’t adding a ton to it. Some things in Illustrator I’ve seen look interesting but I haven’t bothered seeing what all is new about it.
whatever. barely even looks like machida.
/sarcasm
awesome job!

very awesome indeed. My only thoughts are…if it looks like a photograph….why make it? Just use a photograph!
that’s probably just me being jealous of his talent tho.

Yeah, why would anyone want to look at this:

…when they could just as easily look at this:

? It’s a mystery! ?
Yes, I know it’s not the point you were making; I just believe that the act of creating a piece of art can and should be appreciated in and of itself for the skill and creativity demonstrated. Whether or not it could be replaced by a photograph is irrelevant, because that’s neither why nor how it was created.

you think that painting is photo-realistic? Umm….might wanna take an art class.
by handlas on May 1, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
and aside from what I just said…terrible comparison. The artist in the post is clearly trying to define every single imperfection and detail on Machida.
by handlas on May 1, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Don’t be obtuse; I said that I knew it was not the point you were making. And I have taken art classes. I TRAIN UFC AND NPG (National Portrait Gallery). (Not really, but I used to study art casually when I still had electives.)
The point (as I stated), was that it’s admirable for the skill and effort involved, and that I think it’s cool on that level and isn’t just a poor excuse for photography.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
me be obtuse? I clearly am admiring her rendering skill. By choosing those 2 pictures, above, to compare you are just coming off are trying to be insulting.
You know that Rembrandt moved AWAY from realistic depictions TOWARD more roughly rendered portraits as his style progressed, right?
So, really, you’re kind of making Handlas’s point here.

thank you…lol.
I don’t think these guys are understanding me. I’m assuming you, Kittitas, have some art experience because you seem to be the only one making sense. My painting teachers literally looked down on me if I tried to render something completely like a photograph. They looked down on me even more when they found out I love working in Photoshop…but screw em I love Photoshop and Illustrator.
I’m not knocking the piece. Her ability to render like that is incredible. From an artistic stand-point however….it’s just like okay…you recreated piece of work that a photographer already created.
agreed

Dude!
I have no idea how “digital painting” works, but it’s impressive that someone can produce something that can be so easily mistaken for a digital photograph.
Awesome stuff.
I knew all along it wasn’t a real photo – he’s too elusive to be still for a camera.

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner…
If Derek Jeter clubbed a baby seal on earth day while wearing a mink coat and crocodile skin boots while burning tires on an iceberg, the reaction would be "Its OK Derek, you’re a Yankee." -First mammal to wear pants
This is a damned impressive piece of work, but for all the talent the artist clearly has, it would be cool if she added more stylized elements. Obviously her goal was precise photorealism, but the reality is… that is a pretty bland image to reference from. Don’t get me wrong, its a helluva trick to get someone to read your art as a photograph, but someone with this kind of skill could really embelish the details and transform their reference material into something completely amazing from an artistic point of view. At any rate, this is a great portrait of one of my favorites.
Since we’re sharing Lyoto art, here is the sprite I made a couple years ago:

What’s the point in a digital painting of a photograph that looks exactly like the original photograph?
by goodbones on May 1, 2010 7:42 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
if you scroll up you will see we have had a discussion on this. Or, actually me and another guy have posed the same question and the little kids have gotten upset. Much like what has happened with the 2 responses above me.
It shows the artist is talented at copying another artist in a different medium. Scanning through her other work it appears that’s all she does. If that satisfies her…fine. But she could be better if she put her own spin on things.
Not even going to respect the technical prowess shown in her work then?

Art/beauty, really depends and varies for each person. So guys, there’s really no need to argue about these stuff. :)

being an artist is sometimes like chasing a a scrap of paper blown about by the wind...
you just have to chase it… and you don’t know why. On a technical level alone this Machida piece is unreal. Google Richard Estes if you curious.

damn ..
I have to get into this…..first person to name a fighter I will draw him…(or her)…and GO!
