Anderson Silva seriously considering a drop to 170 pounds:
"I’d like to test myself and I always love to take on new challenges," Silva said. "It’s not that I want to go fight Georges St. Pierre for his title. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s the reigning champion, the absolute champion, in that weight category. But I just want to test myself and see how I’d do at that weight."
Silva, who recently signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC, said he hasn’t made 170 pounds in about five years.

Well that kind of takes away the whole
Anderson is just way to big argument. Seriously though, if Anderson was able to cut all the way to 170, which I don’t think he can, he’d be so emaciated that Georges would beat him. Andy wins at 185, GSP wins at 170.
If my memory serves me well he has fought at that weight before, but he has added a lot of muscle since then. It sounds kind of stupid to go back to 170, since that reasonably means that he has to loose muscle.
If he gave it time I am sure he good be comfortable at 170, but it would take time and it should be hard for him to really fill out the heavier classes again. I guess.
I thought only pussies moved down to lower weight classes...
At least that is what some people would lead you to believe…
Nope. Silva would do just fine at 170.

Really?
Anderson is already one of the bigger Middleweight, and he didn’t look that small compared to Forrest Griffin who is one of the bigger light heavyweights. I honestly would be surprised to see him make 170.
Jesus Christ
Anderson at 170? GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE. BUUUUUUUUUUUT that definitely solves the issue of John Fitch at the top. Cause Anderson would murderize him.

Anderson used to fight at 170; at 167, actually, in Shooto. So it’s not out of the question. But my initial reaction to this story was: Get the fuck outta here.
hahaha, fuck you GSP. If you don’t wonna go up Silva will come down.

Anderson fought Okami at 177 and used to fight a long time ago at 170 as someone pointed out above. Even today I think he could handle the drop; it’s not like he’s a shredded 185. I’d love to see him fight the wrestlers at 170, including Fitch and Koscheck, and especially obviously GSP. Hats off to Silva for suggesting the unexpected.
I would also love to see Penn get a crack at Silva if Silva dropped to WW (assuming Penn puts on some lean muscle). Penn probably has the best MMA top game and his offensive wrestling is underrated.
I think this is more talk than anything else. It’s good for the internetz and that’s about it.
"It would appear that the strain was more than he could bear".- Doc Holliday
Yeah. You’ll see him fight at LHW and even HW, but I don’t think he’d fight at WW, realistically. Sure he used to make that weight before, but now? I dunno. He looked as big as Forrest last time.

Shut the fuck up.
Imagine the WW matchups!
Silva vs GSP
Silva vs Penn
Silva vs Alves
Silva vs Fitch
Okay, that’s enough daydreaming.

Penn vs Silva
would….well, it would be awesome

The UFC needs a megafight w/ GSP and Silva.
Really hope this happens someday.
Rather see him at LHW then WW to be honest. Silva/Rampage, Silva/Shogun, Silva/Rashad are all great fights that I’d love to see (not to mention Silva/Machida). At WW he’d probably just beat contenders that he’s a foot taller than in squash matches and then lose a wrestling match to GSP.
"Sometimes hype just ain't enough." - Jens Pulver on his win over BJ Penn
In the same interview, Anderson also said he may just fight at LHW and/or HW as well.
I’d seriously doubt this is more than just pot stirring. The guy was 225 lbs walking around in January, according to Soares, and has fought as the MW champ at 213 at fight time. 170 would kill him.
Great idea, but I suspect Silva will want to fight Shogun at LWH instead, after Shogun wins the title in a month.
I refuse to rise to the flame bait.
"an excellent example of why most MMA "journalism" is a joke. Pseudonyms like "toxic" and shitty writing like that dopey article"--- Joe Rogan.
OK, I suspect Anderson will want to fight Shogun at LHW instead of staying at MW, or making the impossible drop to 170, IF Shogun beats Machida in a month…..
No flame intended
It’s not an impossible drop at all. Anyone who works out would know that. He would need an extra long camp and a strict diet for about 4 months, get around 190 and then make the weight cut during the fight week.
Silva was 210 when fighting Griffin.

I have to agree. How many times has he said he had no interest in fighting GSP? Don’t get me wrong I would love to see the two of them throw down. But how do you go from talking about fighting Lesnar to dropping to fight GSP? Then again maybe Dana told him he had to fight Machida and he said he would drop to fight GSP instead. I think a catch weight scarp cures every ones problem.
I found this exclusive picture of Anderson Silva at 170

You guys are stupid. Anderson fought at 170 plenty of times and he really doesnt even look emaciated at all…
Oh by the way GSP just shit himself. BJ just decided 170 is where he wants to be. Whos the real man! Pwn!
You guys are stupid.
and
Pwn!in the same post??

I can only make your post better by putting together a poorly worded sentence and ending it with PWN!

As if this dead horse wasnt beaten enuf…. its not gonna happen, not at 170 anyways.
anderson signed a new contract?
this is the real news here not this 170 nonsense
i was under the impression that silva was close to hanging it up and was gonna when his old deal was done he is 35 after all and while hes barely been hit in his career the training can take a toll on u

I hope he can do it I really do.
I’d rather see him at 170 where he doesn’t have any friends, at 205 and HW he’s got a bunch of friends he won’t fight
Hey...
He might look like a holocaust victim at 170lbs…but he’ll still KO the top tier of the WW division!
Catchweight @ 180!
No one’s belt on the line. Just pure MMA bliss. Silva can drop an extra 5 lbs and GSP would have a hard time convincing anyone he couldnt fight 10lbs heavier. He needs to do this to cement his legacy.
LHW looks like a good destination for Silva
If Machida loses the rematch to Shogun. If Shogun ends up winning the belt; I can see Anderson challenging for the belt. Winning it, then relinquishing it. I could also see the possibility of Silva fighting at HW perhaps against someone like….Frank Mir. Let’s face it; Mir just doesn’t have what it takes to beat the bigger HW’s in the division. Why not face a 225lbs Anderson Silva…..I’m really just hoping because I’d love to see Mir get blasted by Silvas boxing.
I’m not too sure if Silva is serious about cutting to 170lbs. Honestly though, I wouldn’t mind at all. Silva is the best MMA fighter on the planet. Fedor is great, but Silva’s game is above and beyond all MMA fighters. There would be some nice matchup’s at WW for Silva. There are also some fighters that I’d love to see get their asses kicked by Silva.
GSP, Fitch, Koscheck, Swick…being some of those fighters :).
Picture a fight between Alves and Silva, or Hardy and Silva, or ‘Rumble’ Johnson, maybe even Paul Daley. It would be a great striking exhibition.
Man…..how bout the possible matchups at LHW! Picture Rampage vs. Silva. OMG that would be a great fight! Look at the possible names here:
Rampage, Rashad, Shogun, Couture, Liddell, Ortiz, or how bout Anderson Silva vs. ‘Bones’ Jones? Tell me you wouldn’t pay to see that fight!
Man….UFC has to be salivating at the idea of some of these matchups.
Could be a smart move
If silva cuts to 170, he would still put most of his weight back on by fight night, GSP would weigh 190-195 and silva would weigh 205-210, he would still have his HUGE weight advantage over GSP and could use his reach and weight to wear down georges! And since the fight takes place at 170, he looks like even more of a badass, could be a smart move…….unless he loses!
by AK15 on Apr 7, 2010 4:48 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I could be wrong, but gsp said he weighed 190 at the night of the fight against hardy and I remember alves said he weighed 200 the night of the fight vs georges, just thought these fighters put most of their weight back on the night of the fight. Weigh Ins are Friday morning and that gives them more than 24 hours to re-hydrate and eat!

Super Fight With GSP
GSP will have no place to hide, to me this is him throwing down the gauntlet to GSP, who’s looking more and more boring with BJ & AS moving up or down for competition.
Right, GSP is clearly hiding, given the level of opponents he’s faced over the last 3 years, and Anderson being either hurt or booked for 6 months to fight Belfort/Maia. And GSP really had to hide from Penn in their last contest.
I agree, its frustrating hearing people talk about gsp “hiding” or “ducking”, the guy has had Only 4 title defenses and we expect him now to just leave the division. 170 has a lot of challenges and challengers, and til gsp beats fitch, alves, kos, and others twice, I think he’s best suited there. And with shields coming over along with BJ, 170 will be the most stacked in the ufc! I can see the gsp haters saying he left for 185 cuz he was afraid of BJ, shields, and others! Some people think domination is boring, but the majority doesn’t!
by AK15 on Apr 7, 2010 5:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s just haters making stuff up. In reality, GSP hasn’t had a chance to duck anyone. He’s fought the most top ranked fighters of any fighter at any weight class in the world.
After beating #1 contender Alves, GSP got hurt and was on the shelf. During that time, the UFC booked Silva to fight Belfort. Then Silva was “injured”, and that fight was delayed. When GSP was healed, they booked him to fight the next #1 contender. Then Belfort got hurt, and they got Maia to fight Anderson. And here we are now, with nobody ducking anyone.
When selling GSP’s elite status, why does everyone over-sell Alves? I’m not saying he’s a bad fighter, he’s really really good. But GSP’s 2 wins over BJ, in my opinion, count a lot more than beating up Alves. Alves beat up a rapidly aging Matt Hughes and decisioned an (at least in my opinion) over-rated Koscheck.
Pussy
He just wants to fight at another weight class rather than MW or LHW so he can keep fighting the gatekeepers from all the different weight classes and never really get to fight the real deal of any single weight class
ur stupid

At 170 I actually have GSP winning this fight with Silva. Silva is one of the few guys who could realistically fight from WW to HW successfully. That is redonko!
What is awesome is that we could have possibly have the 3 top P4P in the same weight class. That would be sick!!
Still as much as I think BJ > AS > GSP in terms of P4P at 170 I think Georges whips both of them.
At the end of the day they are all close and Georges fighting at his comfort weight will enjoy a small advantage that should be enough to get him through it. Sick crazy fights possibly though woo
Do the Markham
Anderson should have to give part of his purse to any welter that fights him, just as hazard pay anyway. Might as well walk in at 175-177
Does anyone know roughly what kind of money gsp and silva would make if they did fight? I would assume the ppv numbers would break records, I’m just curious if anyone has a ballpark number, I can’t find what their ppv cuts are? This would be a huge moneymaker for everyone, I’m pumped just thinking about it!
by AK15 on Apr 7, 2010 8:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
This is even more delusional than his talking about fighting at HW, Anderson hasn’t fought at 170 in years and he’s much bigger than he was even then. This is just talk something that apparently Silva likes to do alot of hopefully he shows up to fight against Maia because i’m tired of this bullshit.
I’m gonna go ahead and say that GSP is afraid of keeping any fight standing up. His Serra loss affected him more than we all thought, as seen in the build-up to 111, as well as the ‘ardy fight. I’m not saying ‘ardy would’ve definitely out-struck him, but GSP isn’t taking any chances at all anymore.
A fight against Anderson Silva would involve the proposed Chael Sonnen strategy; strike attempt leads to counter shoot. Now Silva tying him up in a crazy Triangle would be fun to watch!
