Shinya Aoki Unrepentant Arm Breaker Coming to Strikeforce for Gilbert Melendez' Title
Dave Meltzer sets the stage:
Aoki is headed to his U.S. debut against Melendez on April 17 in Nashville amid a good deal of controversy in Japan. The annual New Year's Eve television event in Japan was based on Japan's two leading companies, DREAM and Sengoku, doing a best-of-nine series. The score was even at four wins leading to a battle of lightweight champions. Aoki took Mizuto Hirota down immediately, maneuvered him into an old-fashioned, schoolyard chicken wing maneuver, and cranked. Hirota refused to tap, and Aoki wrenched on the hold until you could see the arm break, whereupon the fight was stopped. Aoki then channeled Brock Lesnar, celebrating in Hirota's face and flipping him off. He was forced to apologize for his post-fight antics.
MMA Junkie talks to the Japanese star:
Shinya Aoki is not sorry he broke Mizuto Hirota's arm this past New Year's Eve, nor is he sorry about his actions afterward....
"No (I don't) because it happened during the fight," Aoki told MMAjunkie.com.
He also told Junkie that an "outside force" compelled him to break Hirota's arm and follow it up by flipping off his downed and injured opponent.
I did a Judo Chop on Aoki's hammerlock variation he used on Hirota. Check that out if you missed it.
New Year's Eve wasn't the first time that Aoki has broken an opponent's arm with an unusual submission.
Jordan Breen wrote up Aoki's career lowlights in 2006:
Transitioning into Shooto in 2005, Aoki found immediate success by scoring a highlight reel submission victory over Keith Wisniewski. An early flying armbar attempt by Aoki startled Wisniewski, and served as a premonition of what was to come. Out of the body clinch, Aoki attempted a sudden wakigatame throw on Wisniewski, and in doing so, snapped Wisniewski's arm at the elbow.
...
... Aoki returned to the ring in November on short notice to meet grappling nemesis Kuniyoshi Hironaka. A year prior (2004) in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu rules match, Aoki broke Hironaka's arm with a flying armbar, sidelining him for nearly a year.
Video of both fights in the full entry.
Jake Rossen wrote an op-ed in defence of Aoki's behavior after the Hirota fight, it bears repeating:
The upside for those disturbed or annoyed by Aoki's juvenile reaction is that he's the minority: most fighters are respectful and congratulatory. (Some, like Fedor Emelianenko, appear to have no chemical reaction at all, which is almost equally alarming.) So what if Aoki's a big jerk? It's all part and parcel for this sport's appeal: you can like the villains, or you can wait for someone to kick their tail. In an arena where you can get your face caved in at any time, no bad deed goes unpunished for very long. If you think Aoki has got one coming, you'll almost certainly be satisfied.
And the formidable combination of boxing, wrestling and top notch submission defense that Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez brings to the cage certainly should give Aoki haters hope.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with embracing your feelings and not being scared to show how you feel.
You can be just as much of a little bitch if you throw anger fits over the same situations.
Knowing yourself an being true to your self is all that matters if you are a strong confident male.
One of my favorite highlights,
Aoki is a beast on the ground and I’ll give him all the credit in the world for that. But seeing him get his face smashed puts a smile on mine. Never been a fan of Melendez either but if he’s fighting Aoki All aboard the G Train

Dick move in that first video.
Don’t see anything wrong with the second video. Guy didn’t tap so he had his arm broken. Seems fair to me.
'Ello G'vnor!
Seems like he has the emotional maturity level of a 14 year old. Strange being that he was a police officer and all…
What’s great about the Sakurai victory is that it came after Sakurai was labeled washed up after his lost to Baron and that Aoki had been bitching about his loss to Sakurai for years. Additionally, Sakurai had run afoul of the police in the past for his alleged attack of an officer during a roadside incident.

Aoki is probably the only fighter that I actively dislike and cheer against. I always watch his fights in the hopes that he loses, but I guess in that sense he’s doing his job, because I tune in.

While I think he is an ass and would like to see him lose, there is a level of artistry withy his ground work.
He has used some of the most interesting submissions I’ve seen.
Melendez is going to put Aoki in his place.
Training with the guys he trains with, he’s not going to get caught in a submission. It’s going to be 3 to 4 brutal rounds of gnp.
Actually, he’ll probably keep it on the feet. Either way, Aoki’s getting a beating.
Diaz bros and Shields aren't the best training partners for this.
They are more patient grapplers usually and do not mimic Aoki’s size or squirliness. If I had to pick somebody to spar with to prep for this, it would probably be Rani Yahya or Wilson Reis.

Typo
“Jake Rossen wrote an op-ed in defence of Aoki’s behavior after the Hironaka fight, it bears repeating”
It was written after the fight with Hirota, not Hironaka.
Dream
Dream told Aoki to behave, it’s not good sportsmanship but what did Dream use to advertise Dream 13. The break & the finger
To quote myself from a dozen Aoki posts ago:
I’ve said this before, but I think for a lot of people, the idea of an arrogant Japanese beanpole who wears rainbow pants and doesn’t punch being a top fighter is deeply infuriating.
Plenty of evidence amongst these comments.

Cracked said it best, describing half guard as
the “stand up and do karate you queers!” position. As much as we joke about the ignorance of stand-and-bang fans, so many people have to preface their comments here with “I love jiujitsu and wrestling, but…”

if the choice is between breaking a guys arm or releasing the hold because he’s simply not going to tap, i have no problem with breaking the idiot’s arm. i hate matt hughes and love royce gracie, but matt should have broken royce’s arm, it’s no doubt what royce would have done.
but
to justify any fighter giving other fighters unnecessary and possibly career-shortening injury because the sport needs heels is weak sauce. guys like palhares and hendo deserved to be punished for such acts.
Ohh yeahh
It was a late shot but the ref did not stop the fight soon enough, and Bisping was talking shit. I didn’t have a problem with that shot because they were still technically in the fight. What pissed me off about the Palhares fight was him holding on after the Ref tried to pull him off. I can’t remember who was fighting but that happened just recently this guy was wailing on someone and the Ref was late to stop cause he was dicking around on the other side of the cage.( I can’t remember if it was on the Versus card or Spike or 111

Or at 111 when Carwin was blasting an KO'd Mir while the ref stood there watching closly and doing nothing...
Yes excactly like that. That's not Carwins fault.

He should have realized that Mir wasn't moving though. I do blame the ref, but at some point some responsibility has to fall on the fighter.
Somebody is gonna die because of reffing like that.
Lot's of adrenaline. I see where your coming from,
but it’s the fighters job to fight until the fight is over it is the Refs job to end the fight. Human decency is a very tricky thing in MMA

Lot of adrenaline... hmm
reminds me of aoki after hirota… hmmm… like how he apologized for his antics because he was amped up or on adrenaline… hmm… Dynamite the worlds biggest mma show and he’s excited… hmm… Aoki is the greatest grappler in the sport. Thats it. I can’t wait to see the looks on everyone’s faces when he beats Melendez and then Thompson and whoever else strikeforce has.
Gonzaga did something like that at UFC 91.
KO’d the guy, pounced and hit him once… stopped and looked up at the Mazz (if I recall correctly) with his arm cocked for another punch, then kinda shrugged and hit him again since he wasn’t being stopped.
I believe it was Mazz who also made Cyborg KO a girl twice in EXC. The dude is a hazard.

I don't know how the commission doesn't step in and fire this guy.
Everybody will make a mistake from time to time, but anyone who does things like this repeatedly should have their license taken away.
believe me, i understand not leaving it in the hands of the refs and that it is sometimes legal because the ref hasn’t stopped it. however…
hendo admitted publicly he knew bisping was out (his later saying this was a joke was just a failed effort to save his job and endorsements) . this wasn’t a case of adrenaline or a late ref stoppage, dan had millions of voices in his ear saying “i’ll like you more if you jack that motherfucker up” so he did. bisping talking trash doesn’t justify it, and to be honest that argument disgusts me.
i know that i’ll get flamed for this. usually when i state this opinion i’m accused of being “butt-hurt” for bisping or “on his nuts”. the truth is i wanted dan to beat him, and badly, but in doing what he ultimately did i lost every shred of respect i had for the man. he had the chance to walk off into the sunset like clint eastwood, but instead he threw himself at an unconscious man like a raging, drunken steroid case.
I think your being a little hard on the guy
yeah it was a cheap shot, but not an illegal shot. Was it classy two years ago when Bob Stoops was running the score up on every body ? No. Did it get him to the NC? Yes. Would I do it personally no, but I don’t think their was any thing wrong with it
by doonerthesooner on Apr 6, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions
this is a combat sport
people’s lives are at risk and it’s the duty of the various administrating bodies to minimize that risk. . running up the score doesn’t throw a persons entire body weight, elbow first, into an unconscious man’s temple. one day, someone is going to be severely injured by such a blow and legions of internet tough guys will justify it, because the fighter who got smashed “talked shit” and thus “had it coming”.
peronalities and feuds make for great tv and a growing mma audience, but if it’s not well policed we’ll have more of these incidents. the ufc wants it’s fighters to smack talk and will reward the ones who drum up the most interest, i don’t want to see anyone unnecessarily injured and have their career shortened because of it.
he knowingly hit an unconscious man with one of the most brutal blows i’ve seen in the history of the sport. he made himself look bad, he made mma look bad (still illegal in my state, might i add), he made the ufc look bad and due to the way the ufc framed their fight, it made the u.s. look bad (as did the legions of “he deserved it”s). you can say i’m being hard on him, but i think he’s lucky he didn’t get arrested for assault. do all the mental gymnastics you want to justify it, i think he’s scum, and i hope i never see another incident like that one. if that means never watching another dan henderson fight, i’m fine with it.
and for the record
i had no problem with the blow at the time. like i said, i understand the notion of not letting it go to the refs etc. But when he stated publicly that he new bisping was out, that’s simply unacceptable. that’s publicly admitting to the fact you used a technicality in the rules to assault a helpless human being.
Dudes..his opponents didn't tap...
serves them right. As for the flipping off…maybe a little less forgivable…

The last person responsible for Hirota's arm is Aoki
Three other beings could have stopped the fight
1: Hirota, his dumbass didn’t tap and now he’s paying the price. Hopefully it was worth “being tough”.
2: The referee: The rules do allow room for technical submissions, the official is there to protect the fighters.
3: Hirota’s corner: Throw in the damn towel already your man is getting pummeled.
None of them did stop the fight so Hirota’s arm was snapped like a twig, I’d be pissed off at the guy as well if he made me break his arm.

However, Aoki broken lots of arms I don’t think he was that pissed that he won the fight
by doonerthesooner on Apr 6, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions
YES!
Every single time a fighter does not tap it hurts the sport. A lot. Aoki looks bad because Hirota didn’t tap. What if Randy Couture had Mark Coleman in an armbar at UFC 109? Randy would have broke Mark’s arm because he wasn’t tapping. But rather than a joint lock it was a choke and Coleman went out, like he said he would. But Randy gets no ill will because… he’s captain america? Or because its a choke? What if GSP broke Hardy’s arm? Hardy wasn’t tapping. How about Efrain Escudero vs Evan Dunham. Escudero tapped way too late for pride but his arm was mangled. It would have literally been ripped out had he not tapped. Did anyone see the Kawajiri fight before Aoki’s at dynamite? None of the sengoku guys were tapping. This hurts the sport. If your in a submission position and its locked in, try to get out for a second, but rather than losing an arm and perhaps never being able to fight again, why not just tap and learn from the mistake? Learn to never get in that position again. That’s what its about. At least, thats what jiu jitsu is about…
Jung Bu-Kyung out grappled Aoki at Yarennoka! 2007
Aoki is an awesome grappler and he’s got decent stand-up. Against Jung Bu-Kyung, Aoki fought him to stalemate on the ground, Jung actually was outpointing him — Aoki chose to stand up and out pointed him on the feet with some good kick-boxing.

Faber, Florian, Nick Diaz, 'Mayhem', Mousasi, Fedor
has anybody ever replied to themselves 3 times before. Before you tell me how much of an idiot I am — it was 3 years since I watched the fight and I didn’t re-watch it till just now — let me rephrase the fight:
Jung Bu-Kyung almost submitted Aoki twice in the first round, and then Aoki laid some serious GnP on him (not kick boxing) — Aoki did, however, show superior Jiu Jitsu throughout the entire fight.
Faber, Florian, Nick Diaz, 'Mayhem', Mousasi, Fedor
would not have been too surprising
Jung is a completely ripped olympic silver medalist with experienced teammates, despite his current 0-4 record
