MMA Nation Warm-Up: Why Is MMA Nation So Often Preempted?
This was taken about 20 minutes before what was supposed to be our show time on Sunday evening. The reference I made to part 1 was another video where I took odds on how soon my show was going to be preempted with the news McNabb signed with the Redskins.
I don't want to belabor the point about fitting MMA into sports channels and news mediums. I think it's clear where I stand. And the McNabb signing to the Redskins is both aberrational and special to this market. But it is worth considering how those in management elect to use their time. If you are a program director, you have choices to make. So, my only hope is that MMA fans understand what's required to move the needle on the sport such that it's a bigger priority for producers, editors and program directors.
Thanks to Chad Dukes and Chris Kinard for contributing.

Football is, and always will be king, especailly in major U.S. media markets except LA. Even basketball and baseball stuff gets pre-empted for football.
I do understand you’re not pointing out specifically this McNabb thing, but rather getting pre-emted for less obvious things, which is completely understandable from your position as a guy who was hired by a radio station to do a weekly MMA show, yet continues to often be refused the opportunity to carry out the function for which you were hired.
I say, have some patience. This MMA thing will eventually become mainstream, but it will likely take another generation. It’s relatively new, and the current set of 18-40 year old males (with a higher weight on the lower end of that spectrum) is really the first generation of big-time MMA fans. Old people don’t like MMA, and they aren’t going to. However, we current fans are not going to stop being fans as we age, and believe it or not, some of us assholes are eventually (some already have) find a woman to bear our children, and we will pass the MMA fandom down out family tree. It takes time, and in the short term, I’m not sure there are currently a lot of people out there who could potentially be turned into hardcore MMA fans. As Time passes, demand will grow, and everything else will follow.
Luke, if this is none of my business then let me know, but do they still pay you when your show gets cancelled an hour before you’re supposed to go on?

no
But the pay is so small it hardly matters.

Good thing blogging pays the big bucks;
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

It does matter though, its not the money, but the time and prep that you put into a show that didn’t happen. You are like a lawyer who never get to go to trial (hint they still take all your money). Not to mention you acquired content that, due to time passing, may be invalid to play at a later date. Not that you are going to sue them, but it is an issue of you held up your end and they didn’t. Or maybe let you run with the McNabb story, that could be fun. Obviously, having the air time is more important to you then the cash.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Agreed, I realize getting his voice on the air and spreading the word of MMA is more important than the actual pay but if they aren’t gonna allow him the airtime they agreed to then the least they could do is compensate him for the work he puts in on it, no matter how trivial the amount may be.

You know, while I really enjoy Luke Thomas because his voice reminds me of Rob Riggle, I feel like he is slightly demeaning when he talks to his audience. I understand where he is coming from, as your average MMA Fan doesn’t understand broadcasting, but I think most people understand the relationship of Mixed Martial Arts to other mainstream sports.
I am more than I should be
But I swear this time I’m just teasing. Nothing serious.

Keyboard warriors need to be smacked around a little and told that they are stupid sometimes. I realize I too am a keyboard warrior just for typing this but I have no problem with someone telling me I am an idiot if/when I am wrong. Unlike some I try to keep my mouth shut and listen to the people who know more in that particular area.
I am huge Chad Dukes fan. I think he is the GSP of DJs. I also like Lavar. Its just miserable to see Chad on a show where all he can do is talk about how the Redskins suck, or at least well over 50% of the time.
Dukes was great with Oscar Santana, but the show with Lavar is terrible. Sports radio is pretty generally awful, it’s bottom barrel stuff designed to sell ads.

Shocking!!
I don’t understand the people that don’t understand. MMA is my number 1 love but I realize that I am relatively rare. Most people follow traditional sports and I don’t see how MMA fans don’t realize their place on the totum pole. I might be a little bit more upset about getting bumped so ppl could discuss a hockey trade but not the biggest trade in the NFL this offseason. Makes sense.
UFC=Circus
The UFC is a traveling circus in most peoples minds. Lots of people like it but a whole bunch of people think its really cruel to the animals. I realize that the animals don’t have a choice and UFC/MMA fighters do but it is no surprise that its not a priority for production teams. Quite frankly, we are lucky we have MMA related radio shows at all. Keep fighting for greater importance though by all means. I love the fucking circus!
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Football is King
It doesn’t matter what city your in, your show would have been preempted if a big trade like that happened in any city.
Randy Hahn: "I’ve been referred to as a playa…"
If the pope was shot in Washington on the same day as a big redskins deal, the skins would be the lead story on the news. That is just how it works. The day Gibbs came back was like the return of christ. While local team news is a big deal in other towns, it just doesn’t stack up to redskins hoopla.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
With Larry Johnson, Willie Parker and Donavan McNabb, the Redskins are now clear-cut favorites to win the 2006 NFC East.
They’re the offseason champs this year for sure.
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

We have more offseason titles then the pat, 49ers, and cowboys have superbowls combined. we can not be contained. Unless you want to talk about actual play on the field, in that case we can be contained pretty easily

Relax
Everyone who comes here is not smart. Most who come here are not smart. That’s the way in works in just about any public forum. And there’s sometimes a direct correlation between strident advocacy and idiocy.
I also said there’s a bunch of smart people here, too, which is the truth. But they tend to be a little quieter and shorter in numbers.

And there’s sometimes a direct correlation between strident advocacy and idiocy.
Way to use this amalgamation of diction to try to explain your own feelings to people who didn’t pick up on your tone in the first place.
For the record, not that anyone cares, I am one of the idiots.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
And this is the type of condescension from our opinion-makers that MMA fans need for our sport to enter the next echelon.

I can't speak for Dukes
But the one I’m wearing is double XL. I’m not shopping at Big and Tall stores. If it’s tight, it’s tight.
I love creatine.

This is such bullshit. Luke loves his muscles. In his opinion, to not show them off would be a crime.
Also, I shop at big and tall stores, all 5’11" 160lbs of me. XL Tall shirts are the shit.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
This is why I can never find XXL because you people are buying them. Not cool.

Makes me happy to see a pro wrestler and mma fighter get along so well.
WAR Matt Brown and Jeff Hardy!!!
"Well... You're damned if you do, and You're damned if you don't."- Bart Simpson
I loved the "This is the guy that's going to fire me one day" line
I’m going to start using that at work.
Why O Why?
Why rely on medium that cannot and will not allow you to serve the mma fan community in the way you know you can?
Video or audio (ESP. video) podcasts can and will payoff for those who are smart and willing to work. You meet both req. Why allow the gate keepers to hold the keys, when have your own audience already?

You're preempted
Because nobody likes you, Luke Thomas. Shave your beard and maybe you won’t get preempted by professional Korean curling (Not Koreans playing the sport of curling, but people using Koreans for curling)

Funny quote:
At least there was a chance it [MMA Nation] was going to be on tonight.
Surely, the Redskins will still find a way to lose despite McNabb.
Luke should grow a pony tail like Dukes.
