Bernard Hopkins decisions Roy Jones Jr. in miserable fight:

"I don't want to sound like I have no respect for these two fighters. I do. But neither of them looked like they had anything left tonight, the fight was hideous, and the tiny violin-worthy actions of Hopkins were despicable. The fight was truly bad in every single way. Neither fighter landed much by way of significant punches (Jones may not have landed one truly good shot all night), Hopkins flopped three times, Jones later called time on a second Hopkins low blow, and overall the whole thing just felt farcical and embarrassing."

This was a truly sad showing. RJJ needs to retire but he should have a while ago. It’s hard to let go when and I know Jones truly loves the sport and wants to compete. I don’t even know what Hop was thinking.

The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.

Hopefully this will be further motivation for RJJ to switch to mma for a superfight with Anderson Silva.

Because you hate RJJ and wish him dead?

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Well I dont know, if Silva decided to box RJJ it might be an interesting fight, of course Silva could just take RJJ to the ground and submit him by will (he is a black belt after all).

I wonder if B-Hop actually saw Haye destroy Ruiz earlier in the day before calling him out after the fight.

Fight only drew 6,792 and according to Dan Rafael most of them were free tickets. I thought that a poster on the UG was kidding that only 1,000 tickets were sold. I heard that HBO didn’t pick up production costs and just sent the announcers.

by RobertGBP on Apr 4, 2010 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Ticket sales didn't matter

BHop made 3.5 mil. for the fight and RJJ gets a significant percentage of PPV buys.

Considering how washed up both guys are (especially RJJ) that’s some nice cash.

And make no mistake about it, RJJ would murder Anderson if the fight ever happens (which it probably won’t)

I doubt that the RJJ we saw yesterday would beat anderson with that won’t throw anything style

When you only sell around a 1,000 tickets for a highly hyped 17 years in the making rematch, it certainly does.

The fight might not even make it to 3.5 according to Dan Rafael. A 50-50 split of the total revenue, and Hopkins/Calzaghe barely did only 200,000 and that was with no final four and a solid economy. RJJ/Calzaghe only did 225,000 and how many buys will this fight get after Jones was destroyed by Danny Green?

Article summarizing this all up. I wonder how much Jones will actually make considering this event is going to bomb. Why should spend 49.95 with PBF/Mosley coming up, and we already had a Manny fight last month.

It wasn’t an HBO event. HBO sent nothing. The announcers: Tessitore does ESPN stuff, Doug Fisher is a maxboxing.com guy, and Sugar Ray Leonard is just Sugar Ray.

RICHARD SCHAFER'S COMMENTS ON WHY THE CROWD BOO'D...

When Schafer was asked to why he thought fans were boo-ing two once lengendary fighters, Shchafer responded,

“…unfortunately in boxing people seem to have forgotten that it [boxing] is called the ‘Sweet Science’ and it [Boxing] is not only about going toe-to-toe . (Richard Schafer).

The only ‘Science’ witnessed in the ring last night, was the fact that we all get old, and no matter how great we once were, we all succumb to the ‘Science’ of ageing.

When the fight is over, promoters need to stop the Promoter-Talk. The fight was rubbish and the fans would appreciate it if a promoter would own up to what everyone just witnessed, instead of trying to spin the whole debacle.

Amen

you can add the commentating during the match to that as well. You have to love in rounds 8-12 how they kept saying Roy has to win some of these rounds to take the fight. The fight was a debacle, and I am a boxing fan, which it is honestly becoming harder and harder to be

Cash is King!

This was just all about the money. The fight was really poor and earn big bucks. What else is there to say between two fighters in their forties way way past their prime. Don’t say because they have a grudge and the rivalry between them. That’s just pure BS.

I said it on BLH last night.

Roy Jones Jr. is my favorite fighter in any combat sport ever. He clearly lost that fight, but the biggest loss was in my level of respect for Bernard Hopkins.

It’s no wonder I like you so much.
