yaaay!

We can stop pretending that Jeff Monson “matters” in the larger context of the division.

The old if a tree falls thing. People will still be fooled into believing he is the UFC contender, not the journeyman he really is.

Among the more insane things of the past few years were the people who were DESPERATE for Monson to replace Barnett against Fedor.

i would still like to see that matchup though, you can’t doubt monson’s grappling credentials. from everything, he doesn’t seem like the smartest person

But Monson does "matter" in the larger context of the division.

Keep in mind, this is his third fight in 2010 (though, in fairness, his last win was against a guy who is 0-3 and hadn’t fought since 1998 according to Sherdog Fightfinder).

He’s one of only six people to go to a decision with Josh Barnett (and Barnett has won 4 of those decisions, including against Monson).

He has a decision win over current UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson about 13 months ago… even if you add in many claims that it was a bad decision, it still went to a decision and Monson got the win.

Monson is a good gatekeeper (or better) at HW. He can go to a decision with some of the very best, but he’s going to lose more of those than he wins. But he’s also a tough challenger for anyone except the elite of the division. His record would probably be better if he was only fighting 2-3 times per year like many UFC fighters, since it seems like he barely takes time off.

And Brent, I was one of those people who was DESPERATE to see Monson replace Barnett against Fedor. He was the best fighter available on short notice to save the (very good but never happened) Affliction card and, even though we all know Fedor would have won, it certainly wouldn’t have been worse than, well, any Fedor opponent in recent memory.

Monson would have been much worse than Arlovski or Rogers.

Belfort was a much more interesting option even though smaller.

And maybe I should have been more specific, I meant at the “top end” of the division.

I wanted to see Monson fight Fedor just because I’m a Monson fan. I know he would have gotten murdered, but at least it was an interesting match up (for me, anyway). But he hasn’t been relevant as a title challenger for a long time; his fight against Timmay was already a stretch during a period where the HW division in the UFC was a mess. He hasn’t updated or upgraded his skills in a long time. For being such a pure grappler, he has crumby takedowns, and his striking – especially given that he has a reach disadvantage against EVERYONE in the division – is really not good. To me, he’s the absolute definition of a journeyman at this point, though I keep hoping he’ll show something new…

Anybody that loses to Pedro Rizzo last year definitely doesn’t matter in the larger context of the division.

Travis Fulton racking up another win good to see.

Against a very old looking Brad Kohler. Fulton hit him with a “high” kick and Kohler looked like he was reassessing his comeback in the cage.

That's a pretty good card...

Monson sure is bipolar though – Travis Wiuff, really?

i think this was his first cut to 205, am i correct?

I don't know but if Monson is overrated I would say Wiuff is underrated

He has a tendency to lose when he should win and visa versa. This was a split decision and if it was Monson cutting to 205 I could see it being tough. Did he cut off a leg to get there?.

Wiuff has been fighting at HW for a the last while. Monson has said he can’t make 205, but that’s crazy talk. He’d have to drop some muscle, but that might actually help him.

yeah, a 245 lb’er at 5’9" means you’re built pretty much like a block of muscle. That’s a pure muscle fullback size

Fickett won - Wow

Although I HEARD it was a controversial ending…

Anything involving Fickett is controversial. What have you heard?

It was similar to the Askren/Thomas ending

Fickett had a RNC on Noble, and the ref stopped the fight thinking Noble had gone out, even though there was no tap. Noble was apparently very much awake and never lost consciousness according to several observers.

Although if Fickett did have the choke sunk in, it seems inevitable that Noble would have gone to sleep soon after, but that shouldn’t be justification for stopping the fight if there’s no tap and the guy is still awake.

by Scott Haber on Apr 30, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I loved when Fickett walked around afterwards acting like Noble tapped or something.
I’ve never seen anyone do that before, it almost made me want to cheer for him. He’s got balls doing that in front of a bunch of Noble fans.

He looked in shape, and the other kid looked like a solid up and coming guy. I think he’d be a solid stepping stone kind of fight for someone that one of the big organizations is looking at. Or at the very least a UFC fill-in if somebody gets injured like a week before a fight.

I was there.

The Monson/ Wiuff fight was by far the most boring of the night. Neither fighter could finish a takedown so it ended up being a boxing match. and a bad one! The decision couldve went either way.

Fickett/Noble- Good, action packed, competitive fight. Noble was definitely winning. He had Fickett hurt twice i think. The stoppage was pretty bad. It was hard to tell how tight the choke was but the ref just stopped it without doing the Pro Wrestling style arm check. Sucks for Noble. but was an entertaining fight

Shana Olson/Yoko Takahashi- This was an awesome fight. Some sloppy ground transitions, but very entertaining. honestly, I thought Yoko won the fight. Kinda seemed like a hometown decision, but it was very close.

Brock Larson won pretty easily. Dave Menne won by takedowns, ground control, and a little GnP. He was losing the striking exchanges though. The Travis Fulton fight was about a minute or so of circling without either fighter engaging and right as the crowd starts to boo, Wham! Head kick. Was pretty sweet! Overall was a fun show, worth every dollar.

According to Wiki, that was the first time Fulton has ever won a fight by Head Kick KO. In his 194th win!

Oh, and put him against Bobby Lashley. I’d like to see that.

by TLow on Apr 30, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

My moment of the night was when “Little” Papa Schnake said that this event was the most loaded card ever held in Minnesota. (He’s right though, Brock Larson is a bigger star than Brock Lesnar, and GSP who?) Oh, and when he said that this was Wiuff’s first fight in front of his home state crowd.(Besides those other 15 that nobody remembers)

Other than those 2 little nuggets of information, and the boring as hell Monson/Wiuff fight, this was an awesome event.

AND THERE WASN’T EVEN A SHOOTING LIKE LAST TIME!!!!!!!

lol, yeah that was some shit. The gunman ran right by my girlfriend while I was in the bathroom. The row we were sitting in ended up getting taped off so we had to find new seats. Damn Hooligans!
