UFC 115 Preview: Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic Says "Expect Some New Exciting Techniques From Me"

"Well we are working hard on just about every part of the game. After so many years in this sport some things need improvements but some are good as they are," says Filipovic. "I'll always be more comfortable with striking, but I do a lot of ground work, takedowns/throws and other stuff. You can expect some new exciting techniques from me, that's for sure."-- With one fight left on his UFC contract Mirko CroCop emphasizes the importance of his upcoming fight with Patrick Barry.
"Yes, the competition is really strong nowadays. These young lions are talented, well rounded and hungry, what makes them dangerous", says Cro Cop.
"Barry is young but very talented, I've seen his fights. I need this win as it's important for my future in UFC. It should be a good fight, I'm sure that we'll deliver an action-packed fight.", says Mirko.

Man I wish he was fighting Rothwell. Hate to see either guy here lose.. And I’m afraid that Barry is going to expose Crocop’s age and outstrike him.

Yeah. Unless Cro Cop can find a way to pick Barry apart on the feet, his UFC run may be done.
Kongo, JDS and Gonzaga have already outstruck him, you can’t be an elite stand up fighter unless you are actually elite in stand up. Clearly h isn’t in that class anymore.
crocop can easily win this fight by simply taking it to the ground. Barry is like a fish out of water there.
Regardless...
Does Cro Cop have a chance at doing anything within the division if he is only the 4th or 5th best striker in the division? We know he isn’t a top ground fighter either.

Cro Cop Lost to jds but he did beat up JDS pretty damn good himself with his sneaky left straight up until he got busting in the eye I thought cro cop well. barry has a reach disavantage i think but have not verified but either way I am rooting for cro cop he hold a special place in my heart

Cro Cop was not beating Junior up “pretty damn good” or any other way. He survived quite well and gave JDS enough pause that he couldn’t bring his full power to bear straight away. But he never had JDS in a lot of trouble, Junior didn’t take a ton of punishment over the course of the fight, and had Junior not been so tentative early on, that fight would have ended sooner. I love Cro Cop and love watching him fight, and I’ll almost always root for him, but the second time that I watched the Cro Cop-Dos Santos fight, I realized that my rose coloured glasses had caused me to miss how one sided that fight was for most of it.

Yeah, I don't thin Cro Cop won a round and if he did it was only one...
JDS beat him until his will to continue left… There was nothing close about that fight JDS blew him out.
Mirko’s pre/post fight talks always make me respect him; dude’s just a good guy/warrior and very respectful of his opponents.

I’d like to know where he lost the killer instinct. Was he tenative like this in his last fights before coming over to the UFC? I’m praying for one last LHK KO from Cro Cop.

I hope he means setting up a kick properly and following through this time. Sorry, but Barry is winning this. I see him being hungry, aggressive, and overwhelming CC.

Dude says the same thing before every fight, the sad thing is Mirko has really good hands he just doesn’t throw combination anymore it is all pop shots. He is so tentative because he really doesn’t want to be taken down and eat elbows so it is all one shot at a time. Poor Mirko your whole career in MMA is a sham, you hold on to glory for winning a tournament full of bloated middle weights and a gassed Barnette that went 2 hard rounds with a good Nogueria.

That is so epic
I can’t even wrap my mind around it.
Imagine Cro Cop jumping into guard and then working rubber guard before unveiling some crazy, never-seen-before choke that inspires dozens of Judo Chops on this very website.

I’ve trained with Barry here in New Orleans and can tell you, the guy hits like a MAC Truck. He likes to joke and say that he punches so hard he can hit you in the shoulder and your nose will bleed. I have no doubt he will run over this lamb like version of CroCop. I’m at work so I can’t post it, but if you haven’t seen it, check out his fight with Gary Goodridge.

Barry is a terrible match up for Crocop
give him someone who can get tired like Rogers, or is sloppy like Rothwell.
give him someone who is on a high run like Roy Nelson, that he can stop their takedowns and manage to outstrike.
Barry is one of the worst matchups for Crocop imo. It’s one of those rock paper siccors fights, and this will turn out bad for current Crocop.

after seeing what Barry did to Hardonk, I don’t see Mirko outstriking him. I hope that Barry is on his rice and ketchup diet again, and is really hungry because as much as I love the old Cro Cop, I’d love to see an exciting, dominant striker in HW towards the top of the division. If Barry wins this, maybe give him Kongo?

I agree, Kongo would be a great fight. I saw an interview on Sherdog where Barry was pressed to say who he would like to fight next after his win over Hardonk and he reluctantly said Kongo. That being said, I think Kongo is the most over rated striker in the division.

Totaly overrated his striking/muay thai is nothing special at all. Its average at best for MMA. So many people talk like he is or was this great muay thai kickboxer before going into MMA when in fact he was a average French Kickbxer who has average Dutch muay thai skills. Nothing special at all. Its just that the HW devision in all MMA does not have all that good of strikers so Kongo looks even that much better.

Rothwell was a perfectly chosen opponent for Crocop
A lot better than Barry. Crocop would love to fight guys like Sylvia, Rothwell, or Rogers.

I already know what's going to happen...
I am going to go into this fight with high hopes for CC, expecting to see some sort of revitalized version who brings the pain like back in ’06, only to be horribly embarrassed and saddened when he fails to live up to any of it.

Honestly though Barry will break Mirko after the first round. Unfortunately for Cro Cop, he no longer has the tenacity to finish fights and he will be relegated to fighting the Anthony Peroshs of the world while in the UFC.
