Robbie Lawler vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral Set for Strikeforce: Los Angeles

According to sherdog.com:
Robbie Lawler will face Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a 195-pound catch-weight bout at Strikeforce’s June 16 event at the Nokia Theatre on Los Angeles, Sherdog.com has learned.
"[Jason "Mayhem"] Miller isn’t fighting because we believe, in speaking with the Tennessee Athletic Commission, that he will put under some type of suspension," Coker told Sherdog.com on Thursday. "After reviewing the tape (of the April 17 incident), we felt that Miller shouldn’t headline our next event. We will honor the Tennessee commission’s decision when it’s announced."
Robbie Lawler (17-5)
Win Melvin Manhoef - KO (Punches) Strikeforce Miami
Loss Jake Shields - Submission (Guillotine Choke) Strikeforce
Win Scott Smith - TKO (Kicks and Punches) EliteXC
Renato Sobral (35-8)
Loss Gegard Mousasi - TKO (Punches) Strikeforce
Win Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Submission (Brabo Choke) Affliction
Win Bobby Southworth - TKO (Doctor Stoppage) Strikeforce

Tim Kennedy should be the replacement.

Damn straight.
Kennedy would at least be relevant, my only thought is that Strikeforce might not want Lawler to KO one of their homegrown talents and then go to the UFC.
Either that or Strikeforce’s whole MO is to take every relatively big name outside of the UFC and throw them together in match-ups ignoring things like weight classes and relevancy, which is what I have suspected for some time now.

well technically none of it is relevant if its not in the UFC. All we can hope from strikeforce is that the fights are entertaining
please tell me this is a joke

middleweight is their only deep weight class yet they can’t even get a middleweight to fight Lawler?

Is this for the WAMMA Franklin-weight belt?

It would look pretty bad for Miller to headline following his Douchebag Beatdown (teehee).
Also, catchweight fights are a fact of life when you have 12 fighters on your roster.

your right . . .
Strikeforce has a small stable of established and marketable fighters, so in order to make compelling match-ups they need to do this. It sucks, but at least they are trying to make big fights.
Now lets hope Lashley’s opponent will finally be Shane De La Rose

The one weight class they have depth in is MW. Miller, Lawler, Hendo, Jacare. Villasenor, Rockhold, Kennedy, Smith, Cung Le, Shamrock, Raddach, Prangley, Lindland.
I counted five of the guys you named that should be fighting at 170.
Miller and Lawler, have both fought at 170 in the UFC. Smith, Cung Le and Shamrock should all fight at 170. Is that really depth in a division?
There is a reason Miller and Lawler moved up to MW
They’re better at MW. If either goes to the UFC (OK if Lawler goes), I’m sure they’ll stick to MW.
I hope im not the only one that thinks this would be a fun fight to watch. Then again, I’m a Babalu fan.

It seems like many here wanted to see a Mayhem vs Lawler bout instead of this. I personally like this bout, but I can see why some MMA fans don’t like it (catchweight bout, not the Miller vs Lawler fight). To me, even though it is not Lawler vs Mayhem, it is still a good fight with two fighters who are around the same skill level. There is also a huge dislike for Strikeforce right now, and I have to wonder if some MMA fans don’t like this fight just because they don’t like Strikeforce.
Stupid
This is just stupid, I am not interested in this fight at all. Miller vs Lawler would have been a great fight…A striker vs a ground fighter(might you Millers standup isnt that bad) but this just isnt that interesting….oh well Strikeforce has found another way to mess up a card, Babalu doesnt have anywhere near the drawing power Miller does and thats what Strikeforce needs
I think they want to make sure the main event stays standing as the last thing EA needs to help get their game off the ground is a repeat of the last card. The really hard core fans may have appreciated it. But a game expo full of sales dudes aren’t going to be hard core fans. They need some thing that says this is exciting and a KO would fit the bill nicely.
Stays standing?
Babalu will probably get this to the mat withing the first minute and a half. Then again, unlike the last card, he actually can finish on the ground.
War Gracie Barra!
Insert witty message here=>
But apparently Shields and Diaz and Melendez will receive no punishment whatsoever. Because, you know, they’re the champs and stuff.

So you send Mayhem into the ring to stir the pot.
The pots gets stirred. Repeatedly.
Now Mayhem can’t headline the show?
Wha?
Someone’s been listening to Dana too much. They didn’t send Mayhem in.

next time you go to a fight
Go ahead and try to sneak into the ring, see how far you get. If they didn’t ask him about it, they knew anyways and didn’t do anything.
He was one of Hendo's corners in the fight
…so it wasn’t that unusual for him to be in or around the ring after the fight. The problem is that Strikeforce’s post-fight cage control is abysmal and they basically let the entire team of both sides just run rampant post fight, instead of strictly monitoring and controlling who is allowed to enter and when.

he wasnt a cornermen… press row saw him get up from his seat and walk into the cage when gus started the interview.
If that’s the case I stand corrected; I know that Miller and Henderson are training partners, and I had read several places that Miller was one Hendo’s cornermen, but of course that was all online so of course that information isn’t necessarily credible.
In any case, it doesn’t necessarily mean that any random person could have walked into the cage the way he did, as the above commenter implied. Still, an embarrassing lack of proper event management, either way.

What the fuck
I was hyped to see Mayhem and Lawler throw down… If anyone should have been punished it should have been the 3 Strikeforce champs.
by Polyhedron on Apr 29, 2010 5:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Nice one, Strikeforce and the TNAC
Mayhem is the one who was attacked, but seems to be the only one to have actually offered a (totally unnecessary, imo) genuine apology…yet is the one being punished?
“This is for running into Nick Diaz’s fist!”
Get rid of the ramp!
congrats strikeforce
you just lost another viewer. i was stoked miller was fighting, now without him and tba fighting more than once on this card idk if i will even watch it.

I'm not saying I want to see Mayhem get suspended
I’d prefer to see him lose against Lawler.
Rather than some silly Franklinweight fight.

Great fight
195lb. is basically Super Middleweight .
I’m just surprised that Lawler would take a fight against a grappler since he turned down Jacare last time
Babalu’s grappling is not on Jacare’s level at all.

While I’m not saying Miller is without blame it’s very disappointing to see Coker continue to make him the center of the blame for the brawl.

Coker's done a poor job with the situation
He’s come off looking like he’s clueless and unable to run his own organization.

I've been thinking the same thing.
3 title holders from the same camp = too much say in the SF world.
Just my opinion but if I was Coker I would be pissed at Miller too. I mean Miller is the one that interrupted Coker’s live TV broadcast on CBS. So I can see Coker thinking if Miller just never would have interrupted my live broadcast the brawl wouldn’t have happened.
Now don’t twist that. I’m not blaming the brawl on Miller. Just saying if Miller doesn’t take it upon himself to enter that cage and interrupt the live TV broadcast then the brawl never happens. I’m not giving a pass to the guys who started the brawl they deserve blame for those actions. Just saying Coker has plenty reason for being pissed at Miller for entering the cage when he shouldn’t have and then taking it upon himself to interrupt the live TV broadcast.
Just BE.

This fight doesn’t make sense because I believe Babalu needs to get a fight by a certain time otherwise they have to pay him anyway. Robbie is in the same scenario. They are at a point where they have to fulfill obligations so they’re just throwing shit at the wall… if they dont get behind the ball quick this will continue.
Oh I think I get it now. So this explains the more stacked cards now. They aren’t stacking these cards now because they want to they are doing it because they have to. If they don’t give them fights they will have to pay the fighters anyway. Is that what is going on?
So it will save Strikeforce money for not having to pay fighters without them fighting but on the flip side Strikeforce will probably lose money on the events due to the higher payroll. They just aren’t losing as much as if they had to pay them without them fighting. At the same time it puts them in the position of now losing money and having a bunch of free agents looking for pay raises.
Am I close on any of that?
Just BE.
Joke fight.
Strikefarce will be dead soon. They are pretty terrible matchmakers.
If I wake up tomorrow and see that the world has ended, then that means God has finally granted my prayers.
GO Armageddon!!!
We all know that the true Franklinweight champ is Vitor Belfort, and he’s in the UFC. The best that this could ever do is produce a #3 guy at Franklinweight.
Keep Firing, Assholes!
I wonder what Shane Carwin thinks about all of this?
