Oh THQ, I see what you did there....

Short Fanpost, probably more deserving of a fan shot, but I'm in a rush.

THQ has screwed up the release of the UFC Undisputed 2010 demo royally. Instead of making the demo available for download directly through XboxLive and the PSN, THQ decided to capture as much user information as they could by directing all interested to their UFC Undisputed Community. Don't bother trying to go over there, the site is flooded, but it is better than yesterday when they had to take it down due to overload.

Just wanted to put something up for others to complain about their terrible experience.

The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

Well, it is getting released to the public next week, you’re not gonna hear me complain about getting shit early, for free though. Anyone who’s frequented the Undisputed Community will tell you they’re not the most apt when it comes to…much of anything. So I’m not surprised that their early Thursday morning release has become a clusterfuck.

Glad I’m not the only one sitting around waiting for these damn Demo codes to be released. Their play for new members is biting them in the ass though, as the site has been sluggish ever since the influx of new members and people visiting the site. They said to expect codes for the demo AM time Thursday, we see how thats working out.

Well, thats your fault on that one, because they said a midnight release was unlikely, and they would also have to make sure that Xbox Live/PSN are equipped with the demos etc…I stay up that late anyways, so I was checking. But as I said. If you were expecting THQ’s demo plan to go smoothly, well, that’s on you. lol

When your Forum gets nuke’d you know you’ve hit the big time. When I first got that I thought I clicked the Demo Announcement thing, so I thought “Oh hey! They must be updating that with new info”…

Nope, that was their forum, failing miserably (not that it’s a very good community anyways, I try to get involved and a day or two later, I just give up).

Touche' good sir.

Touche’.

Although to be fair, the biggest video game demographic is the 18-35 segment. I’m 30 years old, I run my own company, my car is paid off, I have a nice place, I pay all of my bills on time and I still find time to golf, play music and lightly train MMA. I’m pretty adult, I actually wish I could harness the kid side of me more often.

Some people get their fantasy fix through sitcoms & feature films, I prefer a good video game. ;)

But I’m ‘bout to harness my kid side and throw a motherfucking tantrum if they don’t roll out this damn demo already!!! XP

The worst part

Is how the wide majority of the posters to that thread did an utter failure to comprehend, to the point other posters were pointing out “YOUR PROFILE, NOT HERE!!” Pretty much all they saw was “demo code,” “state/country,” and BOOM. I swear, they’re friggin’ begging for the codes… I’m pretty sure it’d be begging for multiples if it hadn’t been made clear by capitalization that it’s ONE (1) CODE PER PERSON, and only for XBL or PS3 (no PSP codes).

by Chortles on Apr 29, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I just checked

And it gets even dumber — both State and Country are already required fields when you sign up anyway, so the forum topic that started this rush (as opposed to the registration rush) is outright redundant!

Thank gosh I’m gonna be eating out to pass the time until “then” (whenever the codes finally get released).

I can complain and complain, but it boils down to this, why announce the Thursday release, if you’re so unprepared, you haven’t released codes up till the mid PM hours? Unless it was something out of the blue, which I know happens when dealing with XBL and PSN, it seems as more of a hype event that wasn’t well planned, rather than a sincere early demo release.

Really bad form on THQ’s part if it doesn’t come out until tomorrow. I don’t mind waiting, it’s a demo, but you don’t give release dates if you can’t hit the mark.

Since they only announced this on Tuesday, there is no reason why it shouldn’t have ready to go.

Yeah, if you can’t pull it off, then don’t announce it. Worst part is, I doubt we’ll get an explanation.

One thing I’ll always like about EA, is they at least take care of their community. As of right now, the only change that has occurred on the official site, is their Demo release picture went from saying Thursday, to Thursday Evening. No news post, nothing to inform those waiting…

And there’s a limited amount of codes, if people wait, wait, wait, then end up not getting a code when it’s released at some odd time of night or tomorrow, they will be PISSED.

Is that confirmed? Everytime I look I see “check back for info on how to obtain your code”. To me, that reads, you have to press a button to receive an email, or something. I could be wrong, but if it was that simple, they probably would have came right out and said it.

We don’t need an explanation, it’s most likely a server issue.

They set it up so fighters would tweet it was available, but it wasn’t.

They said it would be on around 9 AM PST, but it wasn’t.

They said in the evening, it hasn’t yet

Now fighters are saying not until tomorrow.

Figured it out.

Holding the High block and then tap the directional analog twice in the desired direction allows for head movement. (e.g. Holding block and tap back twice makes you lean back, to the right or left and you bob to that side, forward and you duck.)

I figured it out, played it with, and immediately ducked a Rashad hook and delivered a Fedor/Arlovski-esque overhand that laid him out.

Chandella’s now a ring girl, but I’m not liking the need to double-tap the direction, was hoping it’ be a bit more Fight Night-ish… reason being that presumably a single movement would be less susceptible to an iffy controller.

On the other hand

He got a huge Strength increase compared to last year, and a big Striking Offense boost to go with it. So far as I can tell statistically speaking, the best strategy against him would be “takedown from the clinch + busy top game,” as he keeps his overall high defensive stats — yes, amusingly, including Standing Kicks Defense. :P

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey if thats the only problem…maybe they just meant “Trainer in the English Language: Ed Soares”

Problem is

That would apply for Rashad Evans being taught English by Greg Jackson. o.o’ Rampage and Shogun a dash on that line.

Kinda redundant to have a Fight Camp and a Trainer line. You could easily just not mention trainers and leave it at the Fight Camp.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Apr 30, 2010 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Beats me why they went with that

As for Shogun’s opponent… slightly better Strength, but worse Speed and Cardio. Interestingly, Rampage has the lowest Speed of the four (Machida’s is tops), though the highest Strength, while the highest Cardio goes to Evans.

While Shogun’s clinch strikes are much more effective than Machida’s, his Clinch Grapple and Takedown Defense are both worse (and in TDD I mean substantively so)… huh. Shogun and Rampage both use the Orthodox stance, while Machida and Evans both use “Southpaw and Switch”. Also, Shogun and Rampage both use those nicknames as their “first” names.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Interestingly

His “Square button”/“X on 360” attack? “Lyoto’s LEFT Straight.” He also has both Karate-labeled strikes and “MMA Hook” punches, plus at least one push kick, and for some reason seems to have faster lead-leg head kicks than his 2009 incarnation; my guess is that he takes less of a step with the rear leg first.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Big question to those who are playing currently, THQ played up that when it comes to striking it’s all about position. Do you feel thats true?

"The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things." - Miyamoto Musashi

by Kaleb Kelchner on Apr 30, 2010 1:58 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure

But FWIW, there’s now an “Avoid” category in the Action List for striking position essentially for “counterstrikes when swaying,” plus an Extra category for reacting to stuffed takedowns or caught kicks (basically punch, leg kick, or attempt a single leg). There are a LOT more grappling positions though, i.e. Muay Thai clinch against the cage.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah

NON-head KOs are possible… just defeated Shogun (as Lyoto) with a short body knee in front of (but not against) the cage.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 3:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Working up against the cage is awesome. I KO’d Rashad as Shogun after forcing him against the cage and kneeing him in the dome from the Muay Thai clinch.

This demo is bonkers.

by John Lamb on Apr 30, 2010 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Aye... which leads to an interesting strategy dilemma

If you’re consistently good with transitioning from the single-collar tie (“SCT”) to the Muay Thai clinch, then go ahead and keep initiating near the cage, but NEVER when your back is to the cage. If that happens, I’d actually say transition to a “lower” clinch and turn away from the cage.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

The grappling, both standing and on the ground, seems much more in-depth this year. It may be that they added more minor transition or different animations for the same positions but working on the ground doesn’t feel as robotic as last year (side-control to half guard to full mount to posture up times infinity).

by John Lamb on Apr 30, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Rampage is still the shit in case you wanna know. KO power from all his fingers. I made him buckle with a leg kick (shogun) and he fell to the ground I try to mount him, got reversed, 1 punch = KO. Wtf.

The clinch feels strange, I still don’t understand it’s like last year, the ground game is much similar, but with more reversal leading to more position. I think you need to do an additional transition to get to full mount to.

I saw some really cool stuff in the few matches I played. Got pressed against the cage, got scooted to the cage, catching leg kicks, the ground game seemed to work a lot better (if anything its too easy to get mount and such). I have no idea how to defend subs now and there’s a lot of stuff that I’d really like to see the manual to learn how to do. The sway system is beyond me. But it’s looking a lot better than 09.

actually….yes. kind of impressed you can get your girlfriend to play. Mine just stares disapprovingly until I turn off the Gamestation. Your right on the money about the sway control. Haven’t figured it out yet. Hell, it took me two matches to figure out where full mount went.
I guess its just going to take some getting use to. The dash/punch has been nerfed quite a bit, and that was how I set up the majority of my striking.

sway is hmm holding L1 or R1 et pressing a direction I think. That’s what I figured, but I don’t do much swaying, I just kick those legs until the guy falls.

I'm a lover not a fighter

by spectaa on Apr 30, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

In my case the leg kicks are used to set/check range. while “spamming” body shots (SCT /Thai Clinch knees), knees/elbows from side control, and body punches ahoy from top position were my methods for causing the other guy to go down. Before long with this I could pretty much drop/rock an opponent at will from a single SCT knee, though I notice that now a fighter’s max Stamina won’t drop below 1/3 of the full bar.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I admit

I don’t like how you have to “double-flick” a left stick motion for the sway, as opposed to the Fight Night version (hold button, move stick, upper body movement), considering that the fighter too is also only moving their upper body during the sway.

by Chortles on Apr 30, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess is that they couldn’t create a system where you control full sway like that with the 09’ system, but could pull off what they have in the game now. I’m really good at this sway system though, with enough practice it won’t be a big deal.
