Let me begin by saying that this is my first fanpost (and hopefully my last)
None of you really know me, and I don't really give a crap if you do. I have been around the comment section of this site for a while (though I didn't actually sign up until much later). I am admittedly a TUF (2) noob and am by no means an authority on anything MMA. So if you call me an ignorant noob or whatever that's fine, I love this sport and don't really need anyone else's approval to continue to do so.
However, I have noticed a disturbing trend in the last few months in regards to how the boards are treating new fans. The fanpost by thisredengine is a perfect example. While I agree that things like racism and bigotry and petty name calling have no place here (or in society in general for that matter). It comes across as elitist when people are disregarding others' opinions and insights because of their join date (possibly the most asinine thing i have ever seen) or because their opinion flies in the face of what is accepted to be the "norm" (finding GSP fights boring does not immediately invalidate one's opinion).
These attitudes remind me quite a bit of the punk scene in and around chicago in the late 90's and early 00's (the aught's bitches). When i was first getting into it, it was almost impossible to make friends or find new bands/parties because of how closely guarded those already in the "scene" were of their precious lifestyle. (on a side note please hold your judgement of punk music aside as I don't give a shit and it will make you sound ignorant and off topic) What mattered to these people was not the growth of the music (MMA) or the viability for making a living for the bands (fighters) but the closeness and safety that came with belonging to a "cool" group. and of course the end result of their elitism and closemindedness is the existence of Simple Plan and Sum 41 and the All American Rejects as the "faces" of pop-punk (collective hurl in 3....2....1....BLEH!)
The point is that in order to grow this sport we need to ACCEPT new people who may or may not have dissenting and possibly uninformed opinions and instead of um...you know..being a total dick to them we should work on educating them so that they can spread well informed opinions to others.
whatever...just saying.....ban me...i like fightlinker better anyhow
