Early PPV estimates indicate success for WEC 48:
"According to sources in the cable industry, early estimates indicate that the show did between 150,000 and 200,000 buys on pay per view, a number that has to be considered a resounding success internally. Bryan Alvarez has the same report in today’s Figure Four Weekly."

Was wondering why this hasn’t reached front page. 150-200k is really good for this show, that means quite a few people took a chance with the WEC and got a real treat. Means another WEC ppv is highly possible, and I’m sure the fighters are happy to know that.

We need to come up with an abbreviation for that ...
AFFC? AVFFC?
“This fight is 3 rounds in the AFFC …” sounds horrible. Oi, must make it three letters somehow.
AFC
If Aldo wins the other belts like he is saying he wants to they can just call it the AFC.

Asterisk on this number
How many people bought it thinking it was another UFC thing? The WEC brand was nonexistant.
certified warlord
Why an asterisk?
Did those people not buy the product? And if the lack of branding confused people, then Zuffa can simply keep not branding the events.

I had never seen a WEC event until this weekend. I have to say I was sceptical on how good it would be. I’m really glad I bought it. Probably one of the best MMA events I have seen in some time.
WEC arguably puts on more entertaining shows than UFC. Always exciting fights.

You never watched them? They put on free shows every other month or so, and they always at least have 2 really good fights, but rarely ever have a snoozer. They consistently deliver great events.

Alas I haven’t had Versus until about a month ago. I was very impressed. Non-stop action and I think the PPV showed about 8 fights
the wec is truly great
the little guys always put on the most exciting shows,
make sure u watch the top 135 lb guys though cause the ppv didnt showcase them joseph benevidez is crazy fast and puts up a relentless pace, dominick cruz uses some of the best angles and his style has confused everybody so far at 135, miguel torres was the long time champ of the division whos attempting to bounce back from back to back losses and brian bowles packs massive power in his hands
This can only be considered good news!

I wish there was a way to actually quantify how many extra buys that brought in
I think Luke Thomas was guessing something in the 10K range on his radio show. Seems like you think it did more than that?
I think even with Dana White pushing this event
without the WEC brand, the expectation was no where close to this. If it hits the high end of 200k in a month where people just purchased a UFC PPV 112, this is a very high number. I’d say that they blew away their expectations (they will shoot high in the press) and that the Spike Broadcast definitely brought in more than 10k.

I'm inclined to agree with all of that
Though I think even if that fight ended up being just average they probably still would have exceeded PPV expectations. It certainly gave them a boost though, probably more than just 10K.
But how can we spin this into Dana White being a super idiot?
I’m not surprised by this…the sports bar I go to (a big bar) was pretty full. The bartenders were commenting it was dead, but this place is massive and the chairs were 80% full. I get the impression it’s even more full for a UFC event, but still, not bad.
My criticisms of Dana have never been with his ability to promote...
mainly his handling of the media.
That being said, if they left it to Reed Harris to play the Dana role for this show I don’t think it would have cracked 80k buys

Isn't handling the media a huge part of promotion?

Congratulations WEC!
Good for them. I hope they do this the right way though.
Lots of free events , followed by some really big ones on PPV.
Absolutely best possible outcome
Zuffa could not have asked for a more perfect card to christen WEC into the PPV realm. Their next card should do even more buys with the momentum of the last show.
I wouldn't count on that
I think its a fantastic result (and am still kicking myself for not buying it) but this was an awesome card, featuring the WECs most (only?) marketable talent fighting for a title against a Brazilian KO machine in his hometown. It was also fed by one of the best under-card fights in the history of the sport. Still, they are great numbers and provide a solid idea of what is possible under the right circumstances.

As far as I know, not every WEC card will be PPV. Only select ones with the kind of roster we saw at 48. If they do another PPV within 4 months with another killer roster, I have no doubt the momentum from this amazing show will create more ppv buys. The gate may not be as high without a hometown star like Faber, but it won’t be drastically less.
That's right
Reed Harris told me directly they’ll only do 3 to 4 PPV shows a year. The rest will be on Versus.
Follow me on Twitter: @MMANation.
I guess I just wonder if they have the talent
To support a high-draw PPV every three months. Outside of Faber and now Aldo, I just don’t know who they headline a PPV card with.

"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
In a month filled with fights all around it for free and on PPV, that is a big number. Too bad I have to shell out another 50 bucks for Mosley vs PBF this weekend.
So this possibly established
the ceiling for “The Organization” by putting up multiple belts. Will they also seek to find out what the floor is by putting on a less than stellar show, on paper anyway?
Here's my take.
Aldo/Faber and Cerone/Henderson were pushed hard but reality is, now that Dana has pushed them and they have established the ceiling, they can essentially just put on exciting (on paper) fights. But they need to have the UFC push. The second they put on the WEC brand I think these numbers take a nose dive.

I am looking forward to seeing the official payroll for this show to see what the disclosed payroll looks like. Since we now know the attendance, gate, and PPV buys did well.
Also can someone please post the attendance, gate, and payroll figures for the last Strikeforce show??? I am very curious to see what the disclosed salary of Shields is compared to Henderson on that card.
Just BE.
The SF numbers probably won’t be released, not every state requires that they make the numbers public. Nevada does so that’s why we see it so often with a lot of UFC shows being held in las Vegas.
by ufc4 on Apr 27, 2010 3:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah
Nevada and California require it, which is why we get most of the UFC and Strikeforce events, and almost all the WEC events.
Dana is cackling with glee somewhere
Thats a lot of money coming in for such reduced fighter pay expenses.
How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

Why would you excuse Fedor?
It doesn’t matter though, it has nothing to do with the fighters and a lot to do with who is selling them.
I’ll give him more of a pass than Sylvia and Arlovski because both of them were feature in UFC ppvs. I would have expected greater cross over from Ex-UFC champs than Ex-Pride champ.

I think it’s more of function of marketing than anything.
Fun alternate reality. Affliction teams up with Elite XC right away and airs the first Fedor fight for free on CBS. How big does it do? How many sales would a Fedor/Arlovski ppv sell (especially if it didn’t fold and they could have held a Kimbo/Sean Gannon, Cyborg/Carano CBS card a couple of weeks before promoting the shit out of it)?
I’d agree with where you’re going with this. I think they screwed up big time. This WEC buyrate shows what Dana/Zuffa can do with a brandless card with unknown fighters. That’s very amazing.

What’s really interesting is that Josh Barnett (I know Josh Barnett) gave some great advice on what a promotion has to do and what did Affliction do? Ignore everything he mentioned.
Affliction is what happens when you give a fan money
UFC is what happens when you give a fan money first.

Tim Sylvia was the first fighter to make me say
“I’m never paying to watch him fight ever again.”
I think that was after the Jeff Monson fight.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Affliction 1 & 2 sold 190,000 total, so it probably sold a little better than this one event. But I think this really shows the brand power of the UFC (and maybe what the actual floor for UFC events is). It’s no coincidence that an event promoted by Dana White, presented by the UFC, with prelims on Spike, and with Goldie and Rogan announcing is the largest mma ppv not held by the UFC.

Zuffa had biggest gate in WEC history, solid PPV numbers, great fights.

![Reed Harris says the WEC could have three PPV events a year:
"I don't have the official numbers [for WEC 48] ... and it could take a couple months. [But] we had a number internally we were [aiming] for, and we far exceeded that according to the early estimates. I don't think that [three PPV shows a year] would be would something we couldn't attain."
