Early PPV estimates indicate success for WEC 48:

"According to sources in the cable industry, early estimates indicate that the show did between 150,000 and 200,000 buys on pay per view, a number that has to be considered a resounding success internally. Bryan Alvarez has the same report in today’s Figure Four Weekly."

Was wondering why this hasn’t reached front page. 150-200k is really good for this show, that means quite a few people took a chance with the WEC and got a real treat. Means another WEC ppv is highly possible, and I’m sure the fighters are happy to know that.

We need to come up with an abbreviation for that ...

Asterisk on this number

How many people bought it thinking it was another UFC thing? The WEC brand was nonexistant.

Why an asterisk?

Did those people not buy the product? And if the lack of branding confused people, then Zuffa can simply keep not branding the events.

Yeah this is what I want to know. I’d like to see how much more the fighters get out of it. Dana was saying they would all pretty much be receiving a pay increase.

You never watched them? They put on free shows every other month or so, and they always at least have 2 really good fights, but rarely ever have a snoozer. They consistently deliver great events.

the wec is truly great

the little guys always put on the most exciting shows,

make sure u watch the top 135 lb guys though cause the ppv didnt showcase them joseph benevidez is crazy fast and puts up a relentless pace, dominick cruz uses some of the best angles and his style has confused everybody so far at 135, miguel torres was the long time champ of the division whos attempting to bounce back from back to back losses and brian bowles packs massive power in his hands

I wish there was a way to actually quantify how many extra buys that brought in

I think Luke Thomas was guessing something in the 10K range on his radio show. Seems like you think it did more than that?

by dano- on Apr 27, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think even with Dana White pushing this event

without the WEC brand, the expectation was no where close to this. If it hits the high end of 200k in a month where people just purchased a UFC PPV 112, this is a very high number. I’d say that they blew away their expectations (they will shoot high in the press) and that the Spike Broadcast definitely brought in more than 10k.

by Matthew Roth on Apr 27, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm inclined to agree with all of that

Though I think even if that fight ended up being just average they probably still would have exceeded PPV expectations. It certainly gave them a boost though, probably more than just 10K.

by dano- on Apr 27, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it was somewhere in the 20% range. But I don’t know if there is any real way to quantify what the Zombie fight brought to the table.

by pud333 on Apr 27, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

But how can we spin this into Dana White being a super idiot?

I’m not surprised by this…the sports bar I go to (a big bar) was pretty full. The bartenders were commenting it was dead, but this place is massive and the chairs were 80% full. I get the impression it’s even more full for a UFC event, but still, not bad.

My criticisms of Dana have never been with his ability to promote...

mainly his handling of the media.

That being said, if they left it to Reed Harris to play the Dana role for this show I don’t think it would have cracked 80k buys

Good for them. I hope they do this the right way though.

by truck on Apr 27, 2010 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Absolutely best possible outcome

Zuffa could not have asked for a more perfect card to christen WEC into the PPV realm. Their next card should do even more buys with the momentum of the last show.

by Cocytus on Apr 27, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't count on that

I think its a fantastic result (and am still kicking myself for not buying it) but this was an awesome card, featuring the WECs most (only?) marketable talent fighting for a title against a Brazilian KO machine in his hometown. It was also fed by one of the best under-card fights in the history of the sport. Still, they are great numbers and provide a solid idea of what is possible under the right circumstances.

by Dave Strummer on Apr 27, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

As far as I know, not every WEC card will be PPV. Only select ones with the kind of roster we saw at 48. If they do another PPV within 4 months with another killer roster, I have no doubt the momentum from this amazing show will create more ppv buys. The gate may not be as high without a hometown star like Faber, but it won’t be drastically less.

by Cocytus on Apr 27, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

That's right

Reed Harris told me directly they’ll only do 3 to 4 PPV shows a year. The rest will be on Versus.

So this possibly established

the ceiling for “The Organization” by putting up multiple belts. Will they also seek to find out what the floor is by putting on a less than stellar show, on paper anyway?

by rzor on Apr 27, 2010 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

Here's my take.

Aldo/Faber and Cerone/Henderson were pushed hard but reality is, now that Dana has pushed them and they have established the ceiling, they can essentially just put on exciting (on paper) fights. But they need to have the UFC push. The second they put on the WEC brand I think these numbers take a nose dive.

Fun alternate reality. Affliction teams up with Elite XC right away and airs the first Fedor fight for free on CBS. How big does it do? How many sales would a Fedor/Arlovski ppv sell (especially if it didn’t fold and they could have held a Kimbo/Sean Gannon, Cyborg/Carano CBS card a couple of weeks before promoting the shit out of it)?

Affliction 1 & 2 sold 190,000 total, so it probably sold a little better than this one event. But I think this really shows the brand power of the UFC (and maybe what the actual floor for UFC events is). It’s no coincidence that an event promoted by Dana White, presented by the UFC, with prelims on Spike, and with Goldie and Rogan announcing is the largest mma ppv not held by the UFC.
