Bloody Elbow comment section: A note for members
After reading the comments Jenna Jameson/Tito Ortiz story, I think it's time to have a heart to heart with you guys. There are a lot of new members who may not realize how this place works and and why the older posters are so defensive about this community. We pride ourselves on having legitimate discussion with very little name calling. The writing staff is top notch, though sometimes we give them hard times, and the moderators have been keeping this place clean.
The comments in that story were completely out of control, out of line, and disgusting. It is the most recent story but there are those types of comments in every single story. I hate saying that Bloody Elbow has turned into a "cool kids club" but it essentially has. I'll be the first to say that I ignore every single comment made by people I don't know. The reason is that after Zuffa PPVs do poorly, there is always an influx of new people who would rather treat this as a forum than a community. There is name calling and offensive comments because other websites have lax moderation policies and the new members don't know any better.
I'm not going to type this and say that every one of you guys is a jerk but there is a reason why people avoid reading comments by certain posters. I'm honestly trying to stay as calm as I can as I'm writing this but the reality is this: a lot of people are coming in and posting garbage. They don't last long. My signature is a joke but there is some truth to it. If you want to become a community member start by contributing fan posts. These aren't used for open questions like who wins: Superman or Anderson Silva but something constructive that adds to this place. Or, if you find an awesome fight video or interview or even twitter post, make a fanshot.I say this stuff because I really do enjoy this place. I've moved on from my local music forum to Bloody Elbow because you guys aren't dummies. And there are people who are pretty awesome. Keep it clean and don't try and be funny if you aren't. I know I'm hilarious but I try and keep it serious.
Your biggest fan

I consider Kid Nate, Luke, and the rest of the Bloody Elbow gang the finest MMA journalist in the country. Even when I disagree with them, they make me think about a sport I love in a new way.

Agreed. Unfortunately some of the idiots will never even see this article because the headline doesn’t mention “the UFC’s demise”, Dana White doing something bully-ish, or a fighter’s personal issues…

I know…I’m more saying this for me. I know that some of the editors/mods will agree with what I said, but in reality, I’ve been contemplating moving on because I felt it was taking a downturn. I enjoy the conversations I have with people on here and conversations on twitter I have with the editors. My sig is a joke. I know I’m not getting banning power, but I think that some members having some ban powers would help with cleaning up this site.

With the growth of any community, more support is required to keep the quality intact.
I don’t think BE is in a state of turmoil, but it does seem to have an increased number of ignorant comments after ever event, which is disheartening. But, the ones who do know what they are talking about, or at least are civil and respectful, still exist, and there are enough for me to usually continue scrolling down past the end of the article.

Im over forty and a long time lurker – reading opinions that sometimes shape mine, sometimes not. Opinions are like A**holes – everybody has one (and is entitled to share it on sites like these. I can respect an opinion that opposes my own, I respect anyone who can actually explain their opinion and argue it without simply going “Bloody Elbow is becoming the new Sherdog” when referring to a Kid Nate post or something. I’ve been around this site forever, being a hardcore fan has nothing to do with it, how about simply appreciating intelligent conversation? Bloody Elbow, is in my opinion the last bastion of hope when it comes to meeting with other fans online for discussion and community work.

There are very few sites where you can go and have an intelligent conversation about MMA without it getting taken over by trolls, and BE is one of them. Luckily the moderators are hard core and keep most of the riff raff out.

I agree with your stance
But it’s impossible to take a hard line on the comment sections because it’s a very slippery slope. It’s not fair to ban or mod based on my prejudices or personal beliefs because my opinion of right and wrong varies greatly from one person to the next. I learned a long time ago to just avoid the conversations that upset me, as I’m sure you did today trying to make a stand on Mania. But I do appreciate you taking the time to comment and hope to see you in a back in a friendlier thread!

I understand the frustration
but I’d also have to say why not just avoid the comments section? For the long, long while I spent as a lurker before I signed up I sure did. I’ve been into comic books my whole life so I learned a long time ago that if there’s a comment section it’s best to avoid it.
Listen, I love this sport, and I also love to poke fun at things and if you can’t find humor in this whole Tito thing then dude I’m truly sorry. This is not serious news. If Jenna got pounded on and was in bad shape she wouldn’t have been in front of a camera. If she was in an ICU somewhere and people are posting shit like “I hope she dies cause she’s a whore”, yeah, I can understand being frustrated with that breed of asshole. This is different and if you open up a public website and allow said public to comment people are going to poke fun at this. I know I shared a hearty laugh at Rampage’s rampage with friends, most of whom, like myself have been fans of MMA long enough to be considered “elite”. I just find that type of shit funny, they do too. Just cause a dude used to watch Pride back in the day doesn’t mean he loses all sense of humor….well not all of us.
Have you been to a UFC event live? There’s a lot of morons there who aren’t shy about it. It’s what happens when stuff starts to make money, because most of the money there is to be made comes FROM morons. If BE didn’t want to attract these people they’d make this site a lot more private than it currently is. Learn to ignore it and you’ll be happier. Or start a private site.

My faith in humanity is dwindling further than I thought it could dwindle. I want to think that some of the people that say stupid stuff are just having an off day…but there are so many that stick around and cease to amaze…yeah…it’s just bad.
Thanks for writing this, I’ve mulled over the idea of posting something similar, never followed through though. I can honestly say that BE is the site I spend most of my time on. I leave it up and refresh all day when I’m around. The site made me a bigger fan of mma than any of my earliest viewings did, just because of the insight I get from coming here. Like others had said, it’s not just some place I come around to catch up on news, I like to contribute and go through all of the great content. I look at the Judo Chops all the time just because they’re that good, and I wouldn’t EVER look at MMA community tweets if it wasn’t for Anton’s weekly deal.
I’ll be around even if I have to sift through piles of garbage comments and silly fanposts/shots. I just hope thats not what it comes down to.

Wow I agree.
I’m sorry that I can’t find humor in the fact that a woman was beaten. The way I was raised you don’t even JOKE about something like that. The fact that a professional fighter did this makes it even worse. There is no humor in this whatsoever and it’s a sad commentary on the state of of affairs when some folks find it humorous. I’m not a fan of Tito or Jenna but nobody deserves to beat on. I hope she’s alright and I hope Tito gets the help he needs. Like I said, I’m not a fan, but they are human beings and I just hope both will be okay.
"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I love, I will love with everything"
Not that it excuses some of the behavior, but we don’t know if she was beaten so lets not get ahead of ourselves.
To the other stuff, like I told Matt, I respect that fact that you were raised to not make fun of these types of situations. Very much. I think it represents you and the community well that you don’t make light of them. I, on the other hand, was raised to make light of everything if I am able. I understand that the posts really aren’t about me or what I was posting (I think) but I don’t understand the indignation those of you who operate on the “Take everything serious” side of the fence have to people who don’t work the way.

You seriously banned that guy?
All he was saying was that he found humor in it and that it wasn’t serious news. Said another way, he said that he found humor in it — not that it itself is humorous. Can you really not see the distinction? And it is not serious news except perhaps on an MMA blog – unfortunate news, to be sure, but serious news — give me a break. I’m hoping that all of the power you have, and ever obtain, is limited to the power to ban people who articulate a view point that you are not intelligent enough to parse for the sake of the greater good. The level of idiocy in the Comment Section has reached Bollywood levels of ridiculous as of late.

Being new to a site doesn’t give you a free pass to act like conscienceless miscreant. Sure I’ve posted some ignorant things in my time, but making jokes about domestic violence is just wrong. Reading the Tito/Jenna post was like reading a 4chan forum. It was disgusting. BE is better than that. Just my 2 cents.

I’m not saying this post is one of those times, but it’s close. If you don’t like a joke/pic/comment just keep on scrolling and let Luke, Brent, Nate, etc take care of it, otherwise it just clogs the comments section and turns everything into a mess.

But there are people who have replied to my post so sorry to disappoint, I may stick around for a while.
From my experience (this is dating back to the mid 80’s when I was first online) this thread is very typical of how boards grow. First a few like minded friends get together. Then it becomes popular which is what Nate and the rest of the team want because I am sure their income is based on hits (and it would not surprise me that the board is running at a loss never mind the thousands of hours they have put it). As it becomes popular it is going to attract a wide variety of new members. As MMA target audience seems to be young males you can imagine the maturity level of new posters and yes they do egg each other on. So eventually the ‘old timers’ will stop visiting (much like at sherdog) and most likely split off to a new board elsewhere. Nate and the crew will no doubt miss them but ultimately its new influx that will bring in the $$$ to keep the site running.
Personally I think I think if you are that bothered then stop reading the comments and stick to the news stories, else it does not take much effort to skim through the comments and just reply to the ones you think are worth replying to.

While I understand your frustration, not everyone comes to this site for the serious conversations. MMA for them is their break from reality and how they like to spend their time outside from their jobs and families. If they like to joke around so be it, it’s not your place to say it doesn’t belong. That job goes to the people who run this site, who for the most part do a very good job of it. For you to tell people not to make posts if they’re not funny is ridiculous and I hope to God it was a joke.
While domestic violence is no joke, people like to make jokes from serious and tragic events. If I had a nickel for every Chris benoit, or terry schiavo I’ve heard or laughed at i would be a very rich man. If its not your sense of humor let it go and move on.
Also, your post is going to bring the trolls out from under the bridge. There are always people who make posts for the attention and your post is probably going to bring them out in full force. Like the old sherdog phrase goes “Don’t feed the trolls” and i think you gave them enough food for them to last through the coldest of winters

Personally, i dont care if people troll I get a kick out of it and even if i didnt it is not my place to say they cant. But clearly thisredengine doesn’t and i was trying to say bringing attention to what they do is only going to get them to do it more

I didn’t post in any of those stories today about Tito and his domestic disputes.
Frankly it is not really any of my business and it barely has anything to do with MMA, I know it has to be reported upon because it is news technically involving MMA, but most peoples comments are not as MMA fans, but of a personal nature, which naturally breeds conflict as everyone has different feelings on the subject matter.
Having said that, our commentary on here pales in comparison to the horrible crap I read on MMAMania(Hi Jesse!).
We still have lots of good people here, just don’t feed the flames/trolls and try to remain respectful of other posters, ‘do unto others as you would have others do unto you.’
I’m just not that offended by what most people say (except for regarding Herschel Walker—- Blackout 612, I’m looking at you) and I’m generally calloused and have a black, black heart.
Therefore, dark senses of humor don’t get me riled up. It’s the stupidity that get’s to me.

and start to know the style of most of the people responsible for fanposts and comments, you quickly learn which people share you’re opinion and outlook, which people will argue and counter you at any given opportunity, and which people are genuinely intelligent and have things to offer that I had not yet realized or considered. It is these people that make the site great, because we can learn from other perspectives. It
However, when you have 15 year olds coming on here bashing, name calling, being disrespectful, it really messes up the whole vibe in here. The environment gets negative and hostile, rather than constructive and rational.
Anyways, thanks for posting. I guess everyone could use a reminder from time to time. I gotta admit though, sometimes I see things that really piss me off. Im sure some people will know that I get really pissed off when someone goes on a nice long rant about something exciting and worthwhile in a logical, intelligent way, then some blowhole replys with grammarical and spelling errors as criticism rather than contributing to the discussion. That really irks me. You can tell 99% of the time what someone is saying anyways (octogon vs octagon) and this isnt grade school english class. Leave the grammarical criticisms out of the comments, for the love of GOD.
Nothing is worse then when the guy who is losing an argument starts to pick on spelling rather than countering. Thats when you know that you are officially talking to a Dildo. Thanks.

I started out at Cage potato and the comments section looked like something from Holy Taco. I actually found BE from a link on that site. Now I’m here almost everyday because of the quality discussions, Fanposts and writers.
I’m all for sick humor but sometimes it’s like… wtf. I actually laughed at a Fanpost on Mania a couple of months ago that was entirely about several years of spunk accumilation – which was the first article I read there. I rarely visit that site anymore because I don’t visit MMA sites for that. The shit that was said by some earlier today was garbage. So… nice write up Matt and stay classy BE.

Well put and thank you.
Scrolling through 400 BS comments always sucks. Why do I do it? Maybe there is an actual good opinion about all things MMA that I care to read. This is becoming harder and harder to find as the BE community grows.

I do think there is a bit of the cool kids club mentality here at BE...
but thats fine because on the whole there is a nice balance of the low brow as well. I would like to think that both can exist, and from that a good middle ground is established. As much as I hate some of the ignorant nonsense I also hate the holier than though attitudes as well. This is a blog about men and women who fight each other for money. I love MMA and it has wonderful entertainment value and Bloody Elbow far and away has a format that brings out the best in fan community. Honestly I don’t think so much attention needs to be focused on Tito’s personal life, and this kind of thing is happens all the time in other professional sports. Actually much worse happens. So having posts that feature TMZ “reporting” on a fighter’s personal life is just letting the gate open to an atmosphere everyone would rather avoid. I think the cream of the crop will rise naturally and the chaff will go by the wayside. It’s why we have all decided to make BE our MMA site of choice.

I don’t do the fanpost thing so much (at all? maybe once?), but I do love the general tone of (relative) civility here, and try to contribute from time-to-time. I’m not sure what to say to the “just a website” crowd. For me, the point is that I like it because it’s a different feel than most websites. I guess there’s no way to preserve it without restrictive moderating (which I might not qualify for), but I really respect thisredengine’s perspective (except put-off a little that he doesn’t read anything that’s not by people he knows).

and only recently even read the comments much less start commenting, I find the discussions and debates generally intelligent but the hollier than thou attitude some of the moderators and long time posters have is a real turn off and I would assume bad for business. I did read at fox news where Tito said Jenna had a bad pain killer addiction, what if Tito comes home from training and Jenna is all doped up around his kids and while trying to take the drugs from her knocks her to the floor? is he still such an ass hole? will all the people bad mouthing Tito then get banned? I in no way condone any physical abuse ESPECIALLY against a woman, and everything I wrote was pure speculation, but isn’t everything everybody wrote pure speculation at this point? also is it just me or does Jenna’s dad look just like that old guy that goes everywhere with Dana, I think his name is Tom

ok, back from my day off from a double warning, and self imposed time out.
sure, my comments yesterday were ill conceived, childish, and certainly not Christian (for which i am). i have already apologized, and that can still be viewed here: http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/4/26/1445329/crime-scene-investigation-unit-at#36029109
but in response to this article, i am intrigued by all the people smelling their own farts (mods excluded) sitting behind their desk with a sense of arrogance and wishing to weild a power over their equals on the other side of the screen. lines were crossed yesterday, by me included, but is one side of the line really the bad guys and the other side the Justice League here to right all the wrongs of the other guys?
again, i’m not referring to the mods because it is their job to police the comments and remove them according to the tone they want in the comments section. i’m strictly referring to the other commenters who are so much holier than me.

Lets keep it simple and say you're responding to me.
The comments you made yesterday were completely out of control. You weren’t the only one. In fact, as that story progressed, the comments became worse. You aren’t a new poster and know why people enjoy coming here. I changed my opinion of you because of what you said. Am I acting holier-than-thou? Yes. Yes I am. The fact you needed to get a double warning to know what you said yesterday was fucked is absurd. The jokes about that topic were disgusting and the people who continually rec’d them are more so.
This post wasn’t an accusation against people, more of a heads up. Rarely do people read the site rules so when they get warnings and bannings for things that are acceptable on other sites, I figured I’d explain why.
As for the comment below, the Mod squad appreciates when people use this site correctly. They dislike idiots and morons. Unfortunately cracking a joke on a privately owned and moderated website isn’t the same as one made on late night tv.

i was responding to you and about two other people. i had made my postings, then got warned twice almost simultaneously. i didn’t continue my posts after getting warned initially. so it’s not as if i’m that retarded.
it is shameful that i lowered your opinion of me, that is regrettable. i’m not a complete idiot, i can realize when i’ve done something stupid… it happens frequently.
but if we’re all being honest, my mistake was making these jokes in such an open forum, what i said wasn’t so different from what would be said on late night, or in a close group of friends. my objection to what you and so many others were doing, is acting as if i brought about the holocaust. when a guy has been on this site for 2 years and screws up once, you’d think a guy would get cut a break, and not judged on 10 minutes of stupidity.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
Your last sentence is my point though. You got cut a break because you are a 2+ year poster. This post isn’t even about that thread, it was the most recent example. There are a lot of new posters getting warned and they don’t know why. They think this place is run like other sites/forums where it’s essentially a free-for-all. There is a reason you’ve posted on this site for 2 years as well and my guess is that you enjoy the discussion that happens here. The higher quality the fanposts means the more to discuss. The more videos posts in the fanshots means more fights I can see.

It didn’t changed my perception of you, I know you’re usually cool. But I did saw you dig your own grave at some point yesterday lol. I’ve been wrong too, many times (machida/evans, shogun/machida…damn machida, overreacting on stuffs). The first time I commented, a respected “senior member” called me an idiot or something, I was wrong on a the subject because I had so little knowledge of MMA, but to call me names right of the bat? Just to say that nobody here is perfect, we all have off moments. I don’t give up on people for one (or two in your case, just busting your balls) silly mistake (unless it’s racism, 0 tolerance), cause that’s all it is.
I'm a lover not a fighter
0 tolerance
I think a lot of people have 0 tolerance for violence against women as well. It might not be as widely understood (the way racism is), but it’s extremely sensitive for people directly affected.
Use all ten points.
Matt, I agree with your fanpost. Sometimes people (Myself included) try too hard for a funny and for the “green” as opposed to the story at hand. It does wear thin and is sometimes uncalled for, as noted in yesterday’s stories.
However, I do disagree with the idea that because others aren’t well-known, they don’t have legitimate things to say and should be ignored. That and self high-fiving between the notable posters in another post just smacked of elitism, which I have always felt is the first step to ruining truly great websites.
Definitely there are members trying to cause mayhem but there are many members trying to learn about the sport and it nuances. Asking/making a “newb”, uninformed question or comment shouldn’t be grounds to be painted with the “They don’t know what I know, so fuck them” brush. I’ve made the occasion comment that got the “You’re wrong” response with nothing further in the discussion. Considering that there are many knowledgeable people commenting every day, it’s sometimes disappointing that a small number of the smartest forgot we were all newbies at one point or another. Or that some don’t have the time to be as well-informed as we’re all expected to be sometimes over a subject like combat sports.
That said, it’s doesn’t change the fact that BE and its community are second-to-none in the MMA internet world. Especially the “Judo Chops”. I can’t get enough of those!

I agree with most all of this
Except when you say “don’t try and be funny if you aren’t”….. that is objective, and no matter how funny you think people’s jokes are, everyone should be allowed to joke in a respectful manner. All of us longtime members enjoy a laugh just as much as the anyone else, so long as it’s in good taste. Of course I am not condoning fighter bashing or name-calling, and I certainly do not think that domestic violence should be joked about at all, but just because you think someone isn’t funny is no reason for them to be banned from making jokes. In fact, I often look forward to the jokes made by members here, as the are usually much funnier here than, say MMAMania (UGH don’t get me started)

I’m glad that even the people who have thought BE wasn’t a shell of its former self for the last year and a half are starting to get tired of sifting through all the bullshit.
This won’t change anything, of course, but it’s nice to commiserate since the other people who shared my opinion simply left a long time ago.
I don’t post a lot, I just feel the need to blurt out once in a while and it’s usually not funny. But, I do think that in a decent society certain things are always off limits. Like, the C word, the N word, making fun of child abuse, making fun of domestic violence, racism, and a few others.
The bottome line is this, we all want to live in a nice neighborhood and we don’t want to see grafitti on our walls or trash in our streets. So keep your lawn mowed, your house clean, smile at your neighbors and support your local police.

Don’t feel bad, I’m the same way with my cats. And guys aren’t supposed to be cat people. We digress.

the only reason cats are okay in my book
is cause they take good pics and captions for the internet funnies.. Otherwise, it’s all dogs for me.

Meh
Yeah, good points are made in this post, but when coupled with the comments thisredengine made yesterday about wishing he had mod abilities, I can’t help but view this post as just an application to the BE staff to become a moderator.

My posts yesterday were for one reason
I’ve been affected multiple times by Domestic Violence. It’s not something I take lightly and the comments yesterday were complete bullshit. This post isn’t an application. I did ask Luke if I could make such a post and he said it was okay. This post is more of a reminder about this place and what makes it great. Sorry if you took it any other way.

Shitfarce, Douchebag White and Gus Johnson threats are civil commentary but stay away from the Tito/Jenna circus.
i mean it in good fun red, but if you ever become a mod... please make this your picture:

It’s getting out of hand over there. Nobody is even being logical in their hate for BE (maybe 1 or 2 are) yet it’s a front pager because it has people talking over at WKR (no offense Zak, it’s just a lot more comments than you usually get).

Step 1: Pull head out of own ass
Step 2: DEBATE ME IN MMA!!! you’ve got some good opinions thisredengine but i can not believe how you’ve managed to rile up half of the online MMA community by sniffing your own farts.

Ouroboros
Do you know what that is? Its the ancient symbol for infinity. It’s a snake eating its own tail.
I compare this to you, dear red engine, because somehow, with every additional comment, you stick your own head further and further up your ass. Which would mean you’d have to eventually pop out of your own mouth, but you’d already be in your ass.
The paradox is astounding.
Clearly joking, but allow some examples:
“Zak how psyched are you that my fanpost inspired this post to get you a ton of Page Views?”
and such classics as:
“I inspired it, you’re welcome!”

I hate to beat a dead horse.
But when I ran across rants on other SBN MMA blogs about the “Elitists” I was inclined to follow it. I like to think of myself as a mentor or an instructor of sorts, using my 15 or so years of expertise as a dedicated fan of the sport, its global recognition, and growth to teach and inform the new guys just finding their way to our counterculture, rather than bashing them for being as uninformed as we all were at one point regarding MMA. As an administrator in a relatively large MMA community I’ve always tried to be just when dealing with infractions of site rules and staff wishes, always citing the rules when handing out warnings, and only polishing the ban hammer when things get way out of line. My organization prides itself on maintaining a family-friendly, or work-friendly environment and will be quick to spot and remove comments or photos depicting overly vulgar or offensive content.
But for a site that follows a news blog format and uses the catchphrase “Pound-for-Pound the Best in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Commentary, News and Community” as its moniker, I find it disturbing that so many members and supporters of the site were banned by a moderator who had a personal agenda regarding posts that mocked a news story alleging that a known drug-addicted porn star was assaulted by her MMA fighter boyfriend. The anthem of this site clearly states “Commentary, News, and Community.” The infrastructure of news and commentary are based on the constitutional right of Freedom of Speech. But yet so many of your users were BANNED from this site without even the slightest hint of redirection, rehabilitation, or reprimanding for making comments about a scenario within a relationship that has been the laughing stock in this MMA community since it started.
So a long time member was banned for posting something along the lines of “Tito gets a W for once” when every other word posted here is “Fuck, Cocksucker, ShitBandit, and or Nuthugger.” Correct me if I’m wrong on this, but I in no place on Bloody Elbow see a link to rules or guidelines that prohibit making remarks or jokes about porn stars being (supposedly) assaulted. I see no guidelines prohibiting voicing opinions or views regarding any subject matter – no matter how vulgar or in bad taste it might be. Therefore I’m going to assume that the moderators of this site have the full liberty to use their discretion to ban members from posting on a PUBLIC WEBSITE with or without prejudice for anything they just happen to disagree with in a time that their panties are in a wad. If that is the case, then good luck to you. But I highly recommend that you at least put down some infrastructure that dictates what is acceptable and not before slinging around the ban hammer, because a handful of intelligent people do frequent this site, and you’ve made a mockery of yourselves because your Moderators are apparently in the 6th grade.
Good Night.
