MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: WEC 48 Aldo vs. Faber Talk, Jordan Breen Interview
Yesterday on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan we broke down all of the results from WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber. We went in depth on why Faber lost, where he and Aldo go from here and tried to assess just how good Ben Henderson actually is. We also tried to assess how many PPV buys Zuffa can reasonably expect, whether the event was a success and took a ton of calls.
And last but certainly not least, we also caught up with host of The Jordan Breen Show on Sherdog.com, Jordan Breen. We talked the viciousness of Jose Aldo, the regression of the Hughes-Newton position in modern MMA and even a little Donovan McNabb/Caps playoff hockey for good measure.

I prefer the WEC over women's MMA.
I actually think it’s a good idea Zuffa spread their business over different brands.

Luke, do you have a say in the "Sounds of the 90's" intros?
Not knockin’ it, but all the music comes from the days when Clarissa Explains it All was high quality children’s programming.

Here's the deal with that
Before the station flipped all sports in July of last year, I could play whatever I wanted. I used to do only rap music. Now with the flip the execs in NYC have stated they want the same music across all the shows. And the reason why the music is what it is is because those execs like that kind of 90s dogshit music. We’re sort of stuck with it until the folks at corporate decide their taste in music is horrible and makes my show worse.

Haha, sounds like I touched on a tender issue.
Rage is decent for radio but I remember hearing some Nirvana… and flannel draped angst doesn’t feel like an appropriate lead in for talking about face-punching and guys choking each other. Even generic hip-hop would be way better than that.

Oh, and there's the Nirvana lead in again.
On the plus side, I love the shows aside from that bullshit.

Everyone hates the music. The morning show guys (who are basically untouchable in this town) can’t change it, so they spend SEVERAL segments a month shitting on the music and the dumb decision to make everyone the same.
Eventually it’ll get turned. For now, though, I’m stuck.

Maybe it’s because I still like RATM, but as someone who listens to Sherdog Radio a lot, what with all the plugs for bands like ‘Attention’, it could be so much worse it’s actually awesome.

Is "No Music" an option?
I’d rather have 30 seconds of silence (hell, probably even advertising) than be forced to listen to a song when I specifically clicked a link to hear about MMA.
Nice vid Luke!
Agree whole heartedly. I really think with the right promotional push, 155,145 and 135 are the future of the sport.
Come on Luke
Luke Thomas……Are you really going to pass all the credit off to DW and not give any love to Reed Harris?
I should’ve mentioned it, but these vids are one-takes. If you miss something, then that’s it. But yes, Reed gets a ton of credit as well.

Reed Harris has done everything for the WEC, except getting ignored in the biggest day in its history. I wish Harris was alongside Dana in all of those promos. If they are really interested in pushing the WEC as a seperate brand they would have made him more visible.

I'm sure marketing/sales played a big deal in the decision...

This is part of the reason I’m thinking this card might do PPV numbers not so far from a weak UFC card. There’s a million people who heard from Dana via twitter, via the video blogs, etc., that this was one of the top cards of the year, and that he was running the show as basically a UFC pay per view, with a smaller cage. I expect this to be a pretty big success, just hard to see how they’re going to match it anytime in the foreseeable future. I really hope that what Zuffa sees in a positive result, is that the lighter weights can carry a PPV to a degree, and would bolster UFC cards throughout the year. The WEC is better off as it was before eliminating the higher weight classes, a VS broadcast minor league. Why waste title fights on Versus? They can’t all be PPV.

About the branding. I think they wanted to keep Pride going because it probably would have been easier to be successful with Pride shows in Japan than trying to start over with the UFC.
As for the WEC, I think Zuffa is trying to hang around with both Vs. and Spike to try and maybe use each one for levarage against the other into the future.
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Alice in Chains rocks.
Missed the live broadcast, but finally got a chance to listen to all of this. I also felt that Jose Aldo cruised a bit in the last round, but the people that are comparing what he did to the petulant behavior of Anderson Silva have no clue what they are talking about. Those two are worlds apart. I just think Jose was tired and wanted to ride it out.
I too hope Couture smashes Toney’s face in. If that fight goes beyond the first round, I will be disappointed. Couture probably takes a minute or so to feel Toney out and get inside, then hopefully gets the takedown and feeds him elbows and hammerfists until the ref stops it.
Thank you
For posting the show on BE… Makes it so much easier to access. Yes, I am a lazy bastard. Heh.
And for also putting the show up so early!
Fantastic.
Hope you keep doing it this way in the future.
i cry these tears of lust when i submit to you... my love.
