Disappointing Quote of the Day: Anthony Njokuani

via www.mmaweekly.com

Roller wants to come out and say that it was easy. I don't think so. Let me be in the right state of mind and will see if its easy fag. Be a man and stand. We're here to fight not make love.

- Anthony Njokuani via Twitter

I'm a big fan of Njokuani's skills but this comment is very disappointing to see.  First off, the use of fag is awful for obvious reasons and rather than get into a lecture on homophobia, masculinity and MMA I'll leave it at that.

This is mixed martial arts, this is not kickboxing.  Everyone who knew who these two fighters are knew what Roller's gameplan was going to be for the fight.  The idea that Roller is less of a man because he chose to use a strategy that would no doubt end with him on the losing end of the equation is absurd.  Anthony no doubt knows this and is just acting out, but the point remains.

Finally, it is not your opponent's responsibility for you to "be in the right frame of mind" come fight time.  You got completely owned by a fighter who was able to impose his will and execute the perfect gameplan against you.  Accept it, learn from it and move on.

It's a real shame to see a guy who I love to watch fight act out in a way that is so pathetic.

Update: Njokuani posted the following apology via his twitter:

The comment I made earlier was way out of line.  I do apologize for saying what I said.  That's not me I let my emotions get the best of me.

You hit the nail on the head here.

A lot of folks let emotion get the best of them and end up looking bad. I can’t read the guy’s mind, but I’d guess that the statement can be at least somewhat attributed to this dynamic.

At least he apologized, but that doesn’t cover up what was said. He’s apparently one of those fighters who think submission fighting is “gay”, and thats probably one of the worst comments to make after a loss. So, you don’t want to sign for kickboxing matches, but complain when a fighter fights you exactly like he should…and you call him a “fag”? Absolutely classless.

And he actually defended quite well for a while on the ground, I was impressed, so he’s obviously been working on things. Wonder if he insults the guys who tap him in practice too.

Why would it be wrong for someone to think someone is "less of a man" than they are?

Why do we continually make a big deal out of stuff like this? Do we really think that everyone just loves everyone else and it’s all rainbows and puppies. Why isn’t it ok to just simply say what the hell you are thinking without being assassinated by everyone with a keyboard, microphone, or camera.

The general population of the world REALLY doesn’t give a flying shit when someone says some recently made unsayable phrase or word.

LIke they are trying to get “midget” on that list. So now, if you say midget you aren’t referring to a person who’s small, you are hating that person and everything they are. I’m just sick of this shit.

by JimJoe on Apr 25, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

If he wanted to say that Roller was “less of a man” and leave it at that. Fine, he’d be wrong, but whatever.

But associating being “less of a man” with a homosexual slur is TYING homosexuality to that “lesser manhood” which is a bullshit thing to do.

Fag is not “recently unsayable” as you put it.

You’re right, midget and fag… same thing. Historically, verbally… same exact thing.

Sorry that you have to live in a world where people judge you by your words and actions. I’m sure there are gated communities around where you live where you can say whatever you’d like without repercussion.

And… it isn’t wrong for someone to think someone is less of a man.

Brent was trying to show you that he was using the word in a way so as to ascribe a perceived negative characteristic to gay people.

by ruckus on Apr 25, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

The midget thing is stupid. But other than that, I think your whole argument is laughable. If Brent didn’t say all that needed to be said I’d add more, but he covered it well. You can feel however you want to feel about people tossing around shitty terms for people. I personally feel that, while the “fag” thing doesn’t bother me, it is a shitty thing to do to use it as Anthony did, and he was right to apologize.

Maybe the people behind keyboards, microphones, and camera’s are part of the majority of people who think that being a dick by saying dickish things, is something you should be held accountable for.

Right after the win, Shane Roller got up and made a disrespectful statement which was said several times. Anthony was referring his comment to Roller’s disrespect on his hard work. He was not discriminating or belittling anyone. Yes, it was ignorant to use "fag" in his statement, but it’s hypocritical for everyone to come out and bash him, call him a bitch, etc etc… like you never busted your ass on something and have someone disrespect you for your work. your asses be f*cking pissed off too. And like all human beings, you’d lash out of anger and say some dumb shit.

Looking back, I’m sure EVERYONE has said something ignorant, discriminating, offensive, and stupid before (or more than once I’m sure!). So before you judge or dictate a person’s character based on one statement, get your facts straight or do your research correctly. Don’t take someone’s words out of context and create drama out of your own ignorance b/c you are no better. Leave the moral police shit to the man upstairs.
