I can’t stop laughing at the picture either. haha. If they were the same race, It look like a before and after picture for a weight loss ad.

I had the same feeling.
I love Roy, but this picture was funny as hell seeing him beside someone so cut.

Im not sure I agree with this fight. If Roy Nelson loses, he loses to a guy who looks scary but has yet to live up to his hype and doesnt really have a huge fanbase.
I think I’d like to see Big Country vs Big Nog instead. That fight is a win/win for the UFC, if Big Country wins he’s a contender, if Big Nog wins he beats a rising star in the UFC and they get the added bonus of Roy losing to a legend and not some overhyped kickboxer with no ground skills.

Or we get to see a guy who looks like the greek god of abs get gut smothered by someone who looks like they have a lifetime membership to Dominos.

I dislike the mentality that you shouldn’t make a fight because a fighter might lose. If anything that’s all the more reason to make that fight.

by Worldisart on Apr 24, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it’s just a gatekeeper fight for Roy to see if he gets thrown into the mix with guys like Nog and Mir to start working his way up to the serious contenders.

Interesting fight style wise. Kongo definitely doesn’t want to end up on his back against Nelson.

When you think about it

Pretty much every fight Roy has ever been in has been like that

who is left for JDS then?

by kovy on Apr 24, 2010 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

That's a really good question

In a vacuum, I love this fight. I think Kongo is the right step up for Nelson and will be a good barometer of how good Big Country really is.

But both of these guys were possible opponents for JDS, who needs at least one fight while the whole Cain-Brock-Shane thing sorts itself out.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Frank Mir is a possibilty, but that doesn’t seem fair to frank coming off a loss.

JDS can probably wait around for the winner of this fight if need be. He’ll have enough time since he is waiting on Brock to defend against Carwin and Cain.

by IWillPartyHard on Apr 24, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

this

I believe JDS will fight the winner of this one.

by bawzz on Apr 24, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s a good idea because no one wants JDS to take a step down in competition. Fighting the winner of this fight is a step up in competition from Gonzaga, whose last decent win was 3 years ago over cro cop. Since then Gonzaga had only beat McCully, Hendricks, and Tuscherer, who basically all suck.

by IWillPartyHard on Apr 24, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That leaves JDS on the shelf for awhile

He last fought on the same card as Kongo. I don’t like the UFC putting one of its most exciting young talents on the shelf that long.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

If Pat Barry gets past Cro Cop

I’d like to see Barry vs. JDS to keep Junior busy. Hell, we might actually see Junior try to take it to the ground in that one.

I don’t get the laughing comments…

is it because Kongo is not a worthy opponent? Because I would agree. Maybe we will get to see Roy’s ground game this time tho. Thus far both his UFC fights have just be stand-up fights. Roy can take this in the first round with a submission. I was hoping someone like maybe Gonzaga. I thought the initial idea was to give him JDS (which I would not like because I like Roy and don’t want him destroyed).

by handlas on Apr 24, 2010 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

Because it will look hilarious.

That is true. Struve vs Nelson looked funny as well. Guess you can always get some uneducated friends to bet on the fight…just show them a picture.

So I guess

this is the gatekeeper fight for Roy Nelson.

UGH

Roy Nelson is quickly becoming my favorite heavyweight…..really didn’t see that coming back when I was screaming at him to get off Kimbo.

I was hoping for Nelson vs Big Nog, but I guess Nog is still a step too high despite the loss to Cain.

Getting bent out of shape over a fight promoter lying is like getting upset that a hooker won't kiss you. It betrays a deep lack of understanding of the nature of the profession.

by Stanlee on Apr 24, 2010 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think they’re hoping for a Cro Cop win so they can do Cro Cop vs Big Nog II. Everyone wants to see that fight.

I was hoping for Roy Nelson vs. Frank Mir

Well well...

… Roy Nelson by whatever he wants.

… JDS can probably take a fight with Mir. At least this would make a good Countdown segment.

… and here I am wasting my 100th post ! :)

by frozzen on Apr 24, 2010 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

Thats not a waste

I really love the idea of JDS vs. Mir. I think it will tell us much more about Mir than JDS to tell you the truth. I can’t get a read on that guy

by castleeb on Apr 24, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

This

Mir – JDS would do gangbusters.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Apr 24, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, JDS needs to fight either Mir, or the winner of this fight. It all depends on if the UFC needs to add a solid co-main event to a PPV sooner (Mir) or later (winner of this fight).

by IWillPartyHard on Apr 24, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

Between those two options, I'd rather see JDS wait for the winner of this fight.

I think JDS/Nelson or JDS/Kongo could make for good fights. Mir…rematch him with Nog, or heck, do Mir/Cro Cop.

I think Roy should one day just get in awesome shape and show up to the weigh ins looking like a beast and we could watch Dana’s head explode.

If he did get in “awesome shape” he’d be under the heavyweight limit.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
