I believe the Couture/Tony match up is a rare mistake from UFC match maker Joe Silva. I should mention, I do not believe Tony has much of a chance against Randy. The case against him is strong and compelling. Tony doesn't have the power, like Mercer, or the correct style to combat a wrestler. He seems as good as done in his own sport and his move to the UFC is likely a a short term plan for money. Randy on the other hand has had a storied career, and currently shows no signs of stopping. At the very least, Couture was competitive with both Vera and Nogueira. He shows an ever increasing knowledge for the ground game, and solid cardio. So with all that said, where does a win against an old boxer who will likely look lost in the Octagon put Randy?
Interestingly enough, James Tony finds himself in a similar position. On the off chance that Tony does win, it will in all likelihood be written off to Couture's age/declining skills, thus James Tony doesn't truly advance at all (see Ray Mercer, who obviously isn't, and shouldn't be, considered the next great thing in mma).
I can't envision a situation in which the loser of this pair looks graceful, regardless of whether Couture is sprawled out on the mat in the first minute of the night for an early nap, or Tony quickly submits after Randy takes him to the ground and threatens the joint of his choosing. It seems neither fighter has much to gain (other than a few bucks bucks), and each has a lot to lose.
Disclaimer: This fan post was written under the naive assumption that either of these fighter aim at relevancy in any division. Either way, I believe it should be a fun fight.
