Randy Couture vs James Toney in the Works for UFC 118
While the bout isn't official yet, mmajunkie says that James Toney is likely to make his MMA debut against UFC Hall-of-Famer, Randy Couture on UFC 118 in Boston:
In a match likely to re-ignite the "boxing vs. MMA" debate, a bout between 10-time UFC champion Randy Couture (18-10 MMA, 15-7 UFC) and former boxing champion James Toney (0-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is targeted for the UFC's first trip to Boston.
Fighters Only was the first to report the possibility of the pairing, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed that while the matchup is far from official, it's in the works for a headlining spot at the event.
The weight where the bout is going to be contested at hasn't been announced yet. Couture has been fighting at 205 for his last few bouts, and even though Toney and his trainer, Juanito Ibarra, has said in the past that they want to debut at heavyweight, the boxer weighed in at 217 on his last match, so a drop to 205 seems feasible.
UFC 118 will be headlined by a lightweight championship rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, and according to the report, Toney's debut will likely be the co-headliner.
Rumored UFC 118 card so far:
- Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn
- Randy Couture vs. James Toney
- Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard
- Joe Lauzon vs. TBA

Sounds like an MMA circus freak show fight – but not as fun as DREAM’s.

I love both these fighters and I look forward to this
I will also be bumping “industry shakedown” every second of this fight
Justbleed, the only difference is^^^
Couture and Toney are highly skilled fighters. The level of Toney’s MMA ability is still in question, but, his boxing resume is impressive. Couture, well he’s The Natural. This is why I don’t feel like this a “Freak Show Fight.” There is no way I can confuse this bout with, Hong Man Choi vs. Minowaman.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
That’s not really a fair comparison; while Choi might not be Semmy Schilt he has a respectable kickboxing resume, and Minowa has a some decent wins and an overall winning record.
Hong-Man Choi vs. Jose Canseco, now that’s a freakshow.
Well, Im not gonna press the point but, i agree.
Choi will never be considered a top kickboxer and Minowa was never considered the top anything. So, that was all I based it on. Seeing as, JT was 3 weight class champ and Couture was a Pan Am games Greco champ and UFC HW and LH W champ. There isn’t a 200 lb weight difference either.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
Not to turn this into an argument,
but that’s my point. Neither Choi nor Minowa would legitimately be considered world beaters so it’s not unreasonable for them to fight (OK, the size difference does make it a bit of a freakshow, I’ll admit). Whereas Canseco for instance isn’t a fighter at all so by definition any fight involving him is a freakshow. Canseco could have fought Katsuyori Shibata, it would still be 100% freakshow for that reason.
I’ve made more of this than strictly necessary, I basically agree with you that Couture-Toney isn’t really a freakshow. It is something of a curiosity, but 2010 Randy isn’t an unreasonable opponent for Toney.
we are both on the same page.
I have always thought the Japanese freakshows were unnecessary. So. I always tend to slant my arguement against it. In Japan they have little man syndrome so these fights are a source of pride. In America, I want to watch quality fights, freakshow never is mistaken for quality.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
I think this is actually a great matchup.
Until Randy gets ahold of JT. There will be a genuine suspense, Randy has to make it past JT’s hands. I think, Randy boxes with him long enough to get JT thinking it’s a stand up fight. Then puts him on his ass. It will be interesting, JT can be successful if Randy doenst get him dowm. Couture love to dirty box, this could be a bad move with a legit boxer. Styles make fights=good fight.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
Randy doesn’t bob and weave, really. He mostly just leans to his right to try and slip punches, and the older/slower he gets, the more it gets him into trouble. This is why he keeps getting dropped by anyone with a good right cross (Lesnar, Nogueira several times, Vera)
I’m pretty sure James Toney has a decent right cross…
That is what I’m afraid of. Couture just has to get inside once though and take him down, so here’s hoping…
What is the worst that could happen? Toney wins over a credible name, even more credible the casuals. I won’t mind I look forward to Couture’s commentary and if he does win well no shit he won he’s Randy fucking Couture that doesn’y mean Toney is done either. This fight SHOULD be at HW worse case Toney announces a drop to LHW after his loss creating a reason to watch him again. Yeah this one could really blow up into a lot of fucking $$$ Toney will turn out to be a solid solid investment.
Worst thing that could happen:
Toney beats Couture and leaves MMA for good, with a parting gift of “I told you so.”
by CaptnAmerca on Apr 23, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions
lol.
however, I don’t think JT will leave if he wins. He’ll likely leave if he loses though.
JT can’t seem to get a fight [boxing] with a half decent opponent at the moment. He’s called out nearly everyone out there and no one has responded to him. So, I think this [MMA] is JT’s last shot a some kind of ‘glory’ – he’ll dabble in MMA as long as he can.

it may be a win-win for the UFC but it’s a lose lose for the fans. Two dinosaurs of diminishing abilities and we have to pretend like they are relevant and deserve to be in the co-main event. I’m sorry but this is about the definition of a freak show. I honestly feel Herschel Walker would beat Toney.
This matchup proves that Couture cares nothing about fighting the best and only wants a big payday because a win over Toney means absolutely nothing in MMA. I can’t even imagine what Toney’s ground game is going to look like. This really harkens back to UFC 1, where you have competitors coming in trying to prove the superiority of one style of fighting. And if you’re going to be one-dimensional, then undoubtedly grappling is the superior base to striking. Don’t get me wrong—I can’t imagine anything more awesome than Toney catching Couture on the way in, but 99% of the time captain paycheck takes James down and pounds him into submission.
I seriously hope Dana doesn’t start talking about how this win puts Couture back in the LHW title picture.
mmalogic
I dont think this blows up in UFC’s face. Couture is a fighter that has built up so much capital with the fans and the UFC, if he loses it wont hurt his career. He has been through the wars, stepped up so many times and been a entertaining fighter to watch. This is gonna grab alot of mainstream media attention and the pick of Randy is smart. Think about it, JT will be the loud mouth cock sure boxer and Randy will be the soft spoken articulate old mma fighter. The mainstream will eat this up I think.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
Really?
Didn’t expect this. I’m wit it tho. Good Job UFC for being willing to risk Randy to James Toney. Randy needs to take this to the ground immediately because his chin ain’t what it used to be.

really? you sure about that? Aside from Matthew Greer(who?), he hasn’t put anyone down in 7 years, and i’m not sure what was left of Evander counts. and lets be clear, Evander didn’t get KO’d, his corner threw the towel in. Randy will present the truth to the rest of the world that boxing already is aware of. this guy can’t create enough interest to sell a fight. the only reason most of us are going to tune in is to watch him get smashed, and then he can go back to making sad youtube videos about being the ultimate death fighter until the remainder of his DP sets in and he can’t remember who he is
Not feeling great about this fight… Couture likes to box a bit too much for comfort, and he’ll have nothing to prove by winning via G&P. I don’t see how that would bring him any closer to LHW contention. If he tries to box, he’s going to go down.
I doubt LHW contention is the goal. The dude is 45. He just wants to fight and get paid. He has to know by now his contention days are over. When Dana talks about Couture gunning for contention, it’s just promoter jibber jabber.

There’s no denying this fight is suspenseful, but its just a toss of the dice; if Couture puts Tony on the ground its just going to be embarrassing. Alternatively,, this could end up very similar to Tim Silvia vs. Ray Mercer.
Aside from the exciting finish, I don’t really understand how this two-sided mismatch benefits the UFC. Someone is going to look real stupid.
Aside from the face that Toney has no where near the punching power of Mercer. Then again Randys chin hasn’t held up to well lately.

Speed.
Does Couture have the speed to get in on Toney? I know he’s no spring chicken but his hands are probably twice as fast as Couture’s.
Could Toney possibly throw a good punch from the ground? Vera hit him hard enough to drop him…
I’ve been wanting Randy to get knocked out for awhile now but I was hoping it would be by a decent MMA fighter, not a crazy ass boxer.

Vera hurt Randy with kicks..
I don’t see Toney throwing kicks..
Toney has the classic punchers chance here..
The odds still favor Randy. Randy is stronger than Toney, especially in the grappling and wrestling. Toney hasn’t developed those core muscles because he hasn’t had to use them in boxing like they do in wrestling..
Randy will close the distance, clinch im against the cage and wear him down inside a round.. Maybe two.. Randy rag dolls him in the clinch and puts him away with a TKO/Sub victory inside two rounds..

Keith Jardine is now known as "The Dean of Antihistamine" because he is always sleeping early in fights..
Far too early for Toney to be fed to Randy. They at least should have given him a gimme against a striker or two so he can build up some ufc experience. Who the hell makes their debut against one of the former best wrestlers and all time greats of the sport.
Dana clearly sees this as a UFC vs boxing thing and doesn’t want to see a UFC guy lose rather than build Toney into a potential cash cow.
Barring a Couture brain fart where he tries to stand for longer than neccessary and gets caught we know who is winning this baby.
Why?
Can you elaborate on where you get the 15 to 20%? Is that a tipping point? Is it where you win a bar bet?.
Dana isn’t one to set people up with fights so they can build them up unless they are young prospects. Even then they are set up with equally experienced fighters until they show a drastic difference in natural skill.
Toney is too old to just start at the bottom with other new fighters. Toney himself wants to fight one of the best, he’s not looking to start a new career he wants a big name fight and thinks he can win with his boxing skills and natural talent.

Toney has two (t)KO wins. One of which was in 2003. His hands aren’t that lethal anymore.

I'm cool with this
I’m not fond of the James Toney “experiment” but if you have to do it, this is a good match. Go captain America!
Randy’s an Olympic caliber wrestler and James Toney has never had a fight in his life with the risk of a takedown. I don’t care if Couture’s jaw is literally replaced with a glass prosthetic, he’ll be able to take this to the ground.
I think Couture takes this but...
He is no longer an Olympic caliber wrester. He may have been, and that is something most men only dream to be. But at 46, Couture is not an Olympic caliber wrester simply because he is too old.
You can claim that the man is whooping ass against guys half his age, but the man goes and rolls with Olympic caliber wresters? He looks like Coleman in their last fight.
"All I guarantee is violence" - Wand
that's fair...
… Couture was an Olympic-caliber wrestler who is still capable of going 15 minutes with Brandon Vera and Big Nog. Toney still has never faced the threat of a takedown outside of a training room (if in fact he’s actually been working on a sprawl or ground game)
I agree that he is not olympic caliber anymore but his wrestling looked really good vs Lesnar.

because even that aspect Toney has never faced before, much less the ground game.
"All I guarantee is violence" - Wand
My thoughts exactly
Boxing, meet your dirty counterpart
I think people are really giving Toney too much credit
They see former world champion and think Ray Mercer power. Toney’s got 1 KO in his last 10 professional boxing matches, against the always deadly – who? – Mathew Greer. Toney has been out of shape and horrible the last 7 years or so, and he was never famous for his power. In addition he boxed with a “rolling shoulder” style which might be the worst style ever designed for mma. He leans back away from his opponent and picks them apart when they step up to engage. What makes this horrible is that it leaves his legs forward to be kicked or doubled for a takedown.
This is a freakshow and there is no way around it.

Toney's KO power is being WAY over rated
This man naturaly fights at 168 pounds, people. He’s only fighting at heavyweight because his eating became wwwaayyyy out of control. No other reason. And he’s never been a one hitter quitter in any weight division, ever. That’s not going to suddenly change with 4 ounce gloves. He’s an obese welterweight fighting a solid 220 pound man.
Look,Toney isn’t an agressive striker. He lays back and let’s guy’s come to him.His stance is such that it just begs for guys to shoot on him,and there is NOTHING he’s going to be able to do to stop that.If Randy shoots in low on him,how in the hell is Toney going to be able to decapitate him?Just go in for a low single,or even an ankle pick.Toney is going to have under a year of defensive wrestling going into this.Randy Couture has been wrestling for 40 years now,and wrestling on an elite level for 25 of those. No way Toney avoids the takedown. And once it hits the mat,it’s over quickly.

One hitter quitter, refers to some not being able to take a punch. Believe you’re using it the other way around. Just thought I’d clear that up. Though, I did get your point.

I’ve always heard it used in reference to someone’s knock out power-as in,they can knock someone out with one blow. For example,Shane Carwin would be a one hitter quitter.
At least that’s the way I’ve always used it,and heard it used.Jordan Breen uses it that way too,FWIW.

A strong wind is knocking Randy out these days… Toney doesnt need power he just needs to land one punch with the 4oz glove and Couture will be unconscious.
The question is whether or not he can land that punch before he gets dumped on his head.
kinda true.
Toney needs to catch him in the very first exchange, cause I don’t think Randy will stand with him very long (if at all)… I trust that randy can get him down really early though.

Frankly shocked by how many people are buying into Toney having a chance. He is not lethal with his hands, he is going to get taken down and he won’t get up. I guess it’s good for UFC that people are going to buy into the myth, but this is going to be a wipeout.

People also forget that was supposed to be a boxing match which is what both men were training for up until a few days before the fight. I think they kind of had a handshake agreement to keep it as a boxing match even though it was contested under mma rules. Nobody would have thought it was a big upset if Mercer had beaten Sylvia in a boxing match.
by ufc4 on Apr 23, 2010 9:19 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Even if they were training for an mma fight do you think Sylvia would have went for the takedown? I just don’t see that being the case. On top of that Tim threw a leg kick right off the bat so I think the whole agreement went out the window, Tim was fighting his normal mma game. I attribute that loss to two things. 1. Tim being WAY out of shape, slowing his reflexes down and 2. Bad style match up. You have a mma guy who thinks his striking is world class with no ground game vs a guy with legit power and better stand up.

Toney has a puncher’s chance. but that really isn’t a huge one…. That being said, I think most of these statements are coming from Randy’s diminishing chin (and skills?), than Toney’s actual ability.

Title eliminator
You realise that Randy will most likely get a title shot after he has put Toney away.
As Toney will discover, its a whole different game punching if you know that your opponent can kick, push you against the cage or take you down.
Plus Toney has to finish this fight with a KO, I don’t see Toney trying to follow Randy down to the ground to finish him, even if Randy is stunned. And if you have looked at Randy’s losses, he has been knocked down but not out.
Knew it.
I was almost positive this was going to be the matchup. I see couture standing for maybe a minute or 2 and then going for the takedown and showing Toney what MMA is all about.

I feel as though James Toney’s UFC career will parallel Brock’s career. He will dominate Randy but once Randy is down he will submit him from the bottom during some careless Toney GnP.
Toney will then accept a fight at UFC 123 with Cro Cop and he will smash Mirko on the feet and send him into retirement and allow him to become the Bill Dance of Croatia, hosting his own fishing show.
James Toney will then be awarded a title fight with Brock Lesnar at UFC 129. This fight is an interesting one because these men are polar opposites. We will get to hear Joe Rogan say “James Toney black guy, Brock Lesnar white guy” when Goldie tries to tell us how to tell who each fighter is based on their trunks. James Toney is a boxer, Brock Lesnar is a wrestler. James Toney goes on Sports Soup and YouTube to call Dana White a “ho”, Brock Lesnar only has TV to watch hunting shows and doesn’t have the internet. If they were any more different it would be an episode of WifeSwap.
Once the fight starts it will be about who can dictate where the fight will place. I’ll defer to an expert who can eloquently and succinctly state what will happen in this fight……

He isn’t a legitimate threat to Couture. That’s the problem with your argument.

agreed. toney’s biggest success was playing another boxer in Ali. Randy is a legitimate like what, 8 time world champion that has fought people who are incredible in all areas of martial arts and has rarely been dominated. Randy fought Chuck in Chuck’s KOing prime, and i’d be willing to say Chuck at that time had better hands than Toney does now. Randy isn’t going to stand and trade with him, he’s goign to evade punches and drop toney on his head

I absolutely agree
This is the first fight ever that I will be actively rooting for some lay and pray.
Hopefully Handy will get him in the North-South position. God that would be hysterical.

The two possible outcomes
How does it not benefit the UFC?
A) Couture wins and they can rant about MMA’s superiority over boxing. However, Toney doesn’t lose all of his luster because Couture is still a very credible opponent allowing Toney to remain a draw for at least one more fight (a super fight with Kimbo perhaps?). Also the UFC can go on about how they don’t feed cans to new guys like SF did with Walker and Lashley.
B) Toney wins and the UFC can rant about how smart they were to sign him. His victory over a legitimate opponent is proof that this wasn’t a freak-show stunt and will only build even more anticipation for his next fight. In Toney’s second fight, likely against a tougher opponent (Anderson Silva anybody?), and when he loses they can revert back to scenario A and spin things that way.
um...
it’s very easy for it to not benefit the UFC if Toney wins.
Mainly that I’m still pretty certain that what Toney wants is to win a fight in the UFC and take the bump his name receives to go back to boxing for the big paydays that he can no longer get. Like…he can NOT get big paydays right now in boxing. He desperately wanted to fight a Klitschko but they are basically ignoring him.
If Toney wins, and bolts for boxing then nothing good comes of it.

truly though, the line will reflect the very very slim chance toney has of winning. RC can lay pray and transition for 3 rounds if toney has some semblance of sub defense, or he will dominate and submit first round. he’s going to want to prove something, and will.

Ok that is one situation that would not be so great for the UFC. But is there any kind of chatter that suggests a Toney victory in MMA would produce a bump for him in boxing? Especially considering the claims of HBO that there is very little cross over between fans. Also, would boxing fans be impressed or would they expect him to win and therefore not really care?
His name would receive a bump. In James Toney’s mind…that may be good enough for him.

does that bump translate to boxing? and if so, how? I just can’t see any serious boxing camps saying that Toney is worth a fight because he beat a guy who couldn’t win without the ground game. if he came in an made the best boxer in mma look stupid, maybe they would take a look at the possibility of a fight.
I have to believe
Dana wouldn’t be stupid enough to let Toney do that. I’d virtually guarantee there’s a clause in his contract that if he wins, he has to take another MMA fight.
Not afraid to nitpick
They’re definitely going to give Toney a second fight, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Kimbo or they resigned Buentello, someone with strong hands who doesnt like going to the ground.
There’s no way Randy loses this fight. He hasn’t really shown a weak chin, yes he’s slowing, but his grappling level is such that he could escape mount and a tight anaconda choke against the best hw bjj player in history. Randy is a black belt level grappler. he had to deal with distance fighting against vera and little problems, and vera’s kicks are some of the best in the game. PLUS, he won’t have to cut weight so his cardio will be off the charts.
Randy by submission, i’m guessing d’arce or rear naked in the first round. toney will give up his back or try to stuff with his head down, and then its couture’s world.

I'm really thinking this will happen
Toney will knock Randy down with a right cross, and walk back to his corner.
Randy will get up, take him down and beat him senseless (even more than usual)
this fight is garbage I don't want to see it in the least
Toney fighting Couture as his first fight is bullshit why should he get a legend like Randy. He should have to work his way up just like everyone else. I know I’m gonna hear some shit about this but all this fight does for Randy is cheapen his legacy

It might make him the defender of MMA and further curbstomp boxing. Plus Bob Arum has a fucking coronary.
