Bellator Lightweight Tournament Semi-Final Matchups
Bellator's Season 2 Lightweight Tournament semifinal match ups has been announced and will happen at Bellator XVII which will be held in Boston, on May 6th.
- Eddie Alvarez vs. Josh Neer [Non-Title "Super Fight"]
- Roger Huerta vs. Pat Curran [LW Semi-Final]
- Carey Vanier vs. Toby Imada [LW Semi-Final]
- Nate Kittredge vs. Justin Torrey [185 lbs.]
- Greg Rebello vs. John Clarke [185 lbs.]
- Dan Bonnell vs. Josh Laberge [145 lbs.]
- Nate Lamotte vs. Chuck O'Neil [170 lbs.]
As a fan, I can’t wait for our May 6th show in Boston,” Rebney said. “Alvarez vs. Neer should be explosive, with Eddie making his first appearance in the U.S. since he won our lightweight title last summer. Huerta vs. Curran just got really interesting coming off of Pat’s one punch KO of previously undefeated Mike Ricci. Toby’s world class submission wrestling vs. Carey’s world class wresting should be a great fight as well.”
Alvarez’s Super Fight against. Neer could not come at a better time for the Bellator champion. Just two weeks ago, Alvarez (19-2) was the consensus No. 3 lightweight in the world behind B.J. Penn and Shinya Aoki. With Penn and Aoki both losing over the last week, Alvarez has an opportunity on national television to establish himself as the world’s top-ranked lightweight.

The Alvarez/Neer fight is our first chance to gauge how the two pools of lws compare. If Eddie loses it’s going to be hard to argue that he isn’t overrated. And if he wins, we’ll know that he could at least fight and win the UFC. Huerta should give us a better idea on how he’d do with the upper tier of the UFC.

How I see it
If he loses, he’s way over rated and its a huge hit to all non UFC lightweights. If he wins, we find out nothing.
Bellator thinks if he wins he could make a case for being number 1.

If he was fighting a top 10 fighter they’d have a much better argument.

what if he beats Neer and Huerta (assuming Huerta wins the tourney)?

If Eddie runs through those two it will also make Aoki and Melendez look better.

I don’t think they do much to help him make the claim that he’s #1. The window of opportunity is now, before UFC 118.
But if he finishes Neer (which only Nick Diaz could do in the UFC) and dismantles Huerta (who’s only losses in the UFC where by decision to KenFlo and split to Maynard), it will be pretty hard to make the claim that he’s overrated, even at #2. It will also be hard to claim that the non-UFC lws can’t compete. But if he loses the reverse holds just as true.

If Eddie win that fight and then beat Huerta, I think he would still be shy of number 1...
I like Eddie, but that is the truth.
Little known clause in the contract.
It obviously should read “fight in the UFC”.

Looking forward to the Alvarez/Neer fight. I’m actually calling a Neer victory. The lightweight rankings will get no rest.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
according to Fight Matrix's system,
which already has Edgar, Penn, Melendez, Florian , Aoki, and Alvarez ranked…
an Alvarez loss would make Neer ranked 6th at least.

Yeah, it’s gonna be nutty when Neer wins. In my opinion, if you lose to a fighter you have to at least be below that fighter in the rankings. So when you have a situation with a lightweight like Neer who isn’t anywhere near the top ten up against a guy whose highly rated (/overrated) and he wins you can’t exactly put him over all these guys that had manhandled him recently like Tibau, Pellegrino and Diaz.
I’d have to drop Alvarez out of the top ten altogether if I was to rank it.

The way you suggest rankings should be done is basically impossible.

The basic way I suggest it should be done is if you beat the man you go ahead of the man. That’s it in its simplest form. It works off the premise that top ranked fighters should be fighting other top ranked fighters. A situation like this, that only really occurs because of the lack of depth in the bellator promotion fucks things up tho.

Ah…I read your thing as if someone beats you you go behind them and anyone who beat that person. Which creates such an impossible amount of loops that it’d be impossible.

Ah yes… that would be because once I try and write out an idea I have to make sure my sense making abilities keep up, which usually results in confusing sentence structure.

You mean fix the rankings
Since the idea that Eddie Alvarez is a top 3 lightweight is the most laughable thing I’ve read online.

Also, if Neer does win, can anyone remember a time in MMA history where the consensus numbers 1, 2 and 3 were knocked off in succession?

Fedor – ?
Brock – ?
Mir – Lost
if those 2 lost, the interweb would explode.

Wish these fights were happening a week earlier in KC.

Bellator makes for a great Thursday night I really look forward to watching every week on FSN. Great fights!
Luckily they post these fights on youtube because I don’t get FSN. Huerta should steamroll Curran, Imada – Vanier will be a good fight. Also really looking forward to see how well Alvarez does against Neer.
