Steve Cofield comments - "[Jake] Shield could be free in June with taping for TUF 12 set to begin around the same time. Shields would be a great get for the UFC and a natural to become one of the TUF 12 coaches with the winner of a fight against either Daley and Koscheck getting a shot at GSP in early 2011. It would also allow the UFC to build Shields' name with those unfamiliar with anything non-UFC and keep St. Pierre active."

I like this idea a lot more than GSP coaching opposite the Kos/Daley winner. That said, what does GSP do in the interim? Kos/Daley is a really clear #1 contendership bout, so if this happens who does he fight in between?

And I don’t think they would cancel/delay Sonnen’s title shot at this point, so Silva probably isn’t an option. That leaves Thiago or the Fitch/Alves winner.

yea this is stupid. Keep GSP active while letting the psuedo number 1 contenders fight and then fight again against Shields while doing TUF?
The point is that there is no reason to keep GSP active when you got all the contenders tied up.
Let GSP coach TUF against Shields. Sounds like a great idea to me. Build up those contenders more exposure for GSP all around win win scenario.
But they don’t need to build up fights that involve GSP, he’s already printing money for Zuffa. Have him fight once in the meantime, make mega-cash on the PPV all the while hyping up his next contenders.

Dangit. I really wanted Shields to lose. Not becuase he might go over to UFC or anything. I just dont like him. Never have. He’s boring. Now he might be on TUF only to lose to GSP after it all? GSP will tool him anywhere. Cant wait!

Shields is a tough son of a bitch and a masterful grappler, but did TUF really elevate someone like Dan Henderson who, despite being a great fighter, has a pretty flat personality? I don’t see it really helping Shields at all.
Unless he brings his Stockton homeys for a rumble in the gym.

I agree.. seeing how incredibly boring Shields persona is, I dont think TUF will benefit him much at all (maybe even the opposite?). I think they should focus on his fighting skills and record, not try to market his personality too much (unless they can somehow make him interesting, which I doubt). Henderson did not gain any popularity from TUF to anyone I’d think.
However, I don’t think he should get an automatic title shot directly if he joins UFC, he should have to fight one or two contenders first at least.

So to get this straight....
Nobody wants to see GSP on TUF, but nobody wants to see him fight anyone else, and nobody thinks Koscheck or Daley or Shields have a shot at him….
So what you are saying is, let’s just cast GSP in bronze now because he’s a golden god, right?
I also find it funny that the same people saying GSP shouldn’t be holding up the title to do TUF think the titles should be held up to have two champions fight each other. Make up your minds, people.
I think Shields is a great matchup for GSP and I’d rather see that than the Koscheck rematch or Daley. Putting Shields on TUF to let the fans who haven’t watched SF get to know him sounds smart to me.

I will wait for Jake Shields to sign first. I’m not 100% sure he is running off to the UFC. I still think there is a good chance he signs a short contract with Strikeforce.

i kinda think the brawl and shit ratings has put the writing on the wall for SF if they lose cbs its just about all over for them, its impossible to compete with the UFCs brand power in the US the way its impossible to compete with the NFLs or MLBs

Shields as a tuff coach is a horrible idea… The guy has absolutely no charisma. Giving him a tune up fight in the UFC before GSP is also a horrible because usually the way he wins isnt so exciting.
There is no better time than now after beating Dan fucking henderson to fight GSP. A jake/gsp fight will not sell one iota better after a tuf stint or a contender fight than it will now.
If he didnt be dan then its a different story, but he did – so this is the peak of his appeal.

Shields on TUF?
Shields is so boring to watch in a fight it’s not even funny. He had an incredibly dominating performance over Hendo and he still came off as boring. How do you mount someone for 3.5 rounds and not even scratch the guy? The bad news is, listening to him talk and hype a fight is even worse than watching him fight. GSP will destroy him as well. I pray the UFC does not sign him.
