That’s a serious test for Marcus. Not in the sense that Goulet is a “threat”, but in the sense that he isn’t. If Davis can’t starch Goulet, quickly and impressively, he’s done.

I agree 100%

Belcher has a crappy sense of style and an ugly tattoo but he really brings it to the cage. I’m a fan of his.

If you had just typed “Has a crappy sense of style and an ugly tattoo but he really brings it in the cage” and asked me to guess which fighter you were referring to, I would have said Belcher without hesitating. That’s the most accurate description of him possible.

It’ll be like the Nate Quarry fight recently where one guy was landing all night and then every so often Cote lands a huge shot. Except this time there’ll be a lot more skill involved.

He can't.

There’s a reason he’s lost to pretty much any decent fighter who wanted to get the fight to the floor. Kos tries to act like he’ll stand with Daley, but he’ll probably stand about as long as he did in the Johnson fight before Daley comes forward, Josh slips under and takes him down and finishes it. I like Daley but this is a bad match-up for him.

I’m aware of Kos’s advantages, but I really, really hope he gets a couple minute bout of the stupids and decides to test his “improved standup” against Semtex.

I’m stoked for this card, but I’m a little worried that I’m gonna be depressed after Kos grinds out a win.

Yeah, GSP is better at this game, and Shields comes first if he ever come (I’m no mmalogic, until he signs I don’t consider him a contender), but what can Dailey do to prove he can hang with GSP except beating one of the best wrestler at WW and a possible contender? But he needs to prove he can stuff takedowns or work on the ground, because we just saw what happens if you can’t.

Oh man. Wait why does Dana keep hyping Machida and Shogun as two brawlers? That hate the ground? Lol. Dana now, now time to relax buddy. Sell the fight sure, but the way you potray them in inaccurate.

Not only are they two of the best strikers they sick grappling skills as well. He keeps trying to make these guys stand and bang type of guys. While Shogun normally is Machida certainly is not. This should be called high level striking. Stand and bang is for the unskilled strikers in the UFC. Machida and Shogun are top top of the food chain in MMA.

Koscheck

I might be that egotistical . I might just stand with him the whole time to prove a point.

This is very dangerous thing for Kos to be doing. I respect his manhood as only a real man thinks like this. Kos tryna come with the Fedor mindset and beat you were you are best at. Problem is that has never worked for anyone except our Lord Fedor. Daley’s left hook is coming and is going to connect. I hope Kos does stand for a while but hopefully he is smart and decides to take him down and molest him on the ground as he di to Johnson.

Also Machida trying to convince us he won is laughable.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

i actually thought machida won

when i watched it live, i thought shogun pulled it off.
but the more i watch that fight, the more i see lyoto win.
the commentary of rogan and goldie was biased. all they did was praise shogun.
if you watch it on mute, and their incessant babbling isn’t influencing the viewer’s opinion,
then i saw machida clearly win Rds 2 & 3, and a close Rd 1 for machida as well.

but for Joe Rogan to say “the most controversial decision of 2009” is ridiculous! at least this fight was truly close enough to go either way, although i scored it 48-47 machida.

has anyone forgotten about couture vs vera??? did anyone actually think couture won? besides the dumbass judges of course……

Love having Dana talk about how "neither of these guys are going to take it to the ground" when Shogun and Machida are both great on the ground as well and Shogun did try to do exactly that a handful of times in the first fight.

Arguably, Shogun is stronger on the ground than his standup (arguably of course, but I am trying to point out that his ground game is very strong). Machida also has a BJJ black belt and went to the ground with Thiago Silva, David Heath, Sokoudjou, Nakamura, Hoger and Tito Ortiz (almost all of his opponents). Dana White was WAY OFF base here.

by chrisbboy82 on Apr 19, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

It always seemed strange to me (not really) that Dana advertises a lot of fights by saying “this fight is not going to the ground”, just like ground fighting would be something unwanted. I think he’s bad for the sport. (sarcasm).

by dancingChicken on Apr 20, 2010 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions

These are two of the smartest fighters in the world

My gut tells me to take Lyoto in the rematch, considering he was the one who got surprised in the last match up and he will be able to make adjustments. In theory Shogun could just use the same strategy again. But Shogun just read Lyoto’s style so well. When he was breaking the fight down in this video it seemed so concise. It made Lyoto’s style, which has been so hard for trained and experienced writers to explain sound so simple. Part of me has faith he’ll figure him out again. This is going to be a great card.

by Neil Manich on Apr 19, 2010 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

Im in agreeance with you a 100% hiebstasic.

I mean I wouldn’t be suprised if Shogun won either but I think Lyoto does take this based on that.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Also I really don’t think anyone if knocking Machida out. He just is too good to take heavy damage. Seeing how Shogun lost a decision which was pretty much the best he could do I don’t see how Shogun can win with the judges at all.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He can't

He’s going to have to score a KO or a sub to win. The judges have already shown they are incompetent.

by Toolshed on Apr 19, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree.

Machida is the one who will need to finish the fight. The judges (Peoples notwithstanding) may overcompensate the other way this time when scoring the rounds.

He most certainly can win a decision. In fact, I’m picking him.

by Neil Manich on Apr 19, 2010 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Most cases it is harder game-planing as the winner then the loser but in this case I think it is the opposite for Machida and Shogun. Shogun exploited a weakness in Machida’s style and now Machida has had all this time to improve and make changes that Shogun cannot gameplan for. I couldn’t begin to think of what Shogun would decide to do differently and using the same game plan may end up being useless if Machida executes on whatever changes he’s made to negate his previous weakness.

Many MMA fans are hoping that Jon “Bones” Jones will be that guy. Machida and Shogun are interchangeably number one and number two in my opinion, but there are fighters like Rogerio Nogueira and Rampage (Evans is there, but the dominating loss to Machida is still fresh in MMA fans’ minds) waiting in the wings in the near future with Jones and Bader coming up the ranks.

Shit changes all the time but the winner of Kos vs Daley will likely coach tuf against Diego Sanchez – winner of that fighting GSP after shields.

Diego and Kos coaching tuf will be epic.

by mmalogic on Apr 19, 2010 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

Doesn’t Diego need a tune up fight. Him getting his face smashed in by BJ is still far too fresh in my mind.

Different division?

That’s the easiest way to sell it. It’s not like he was sent down to 155 with his tail between his legs, he was a top 10 WW at the time of the switch.

by Worldisart on Apr 19, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

diego shouldve never went down. hes too slow for lw and the cut took away from his g n p, he was too weak. i think this time around ww he’s going to be a pissed off force of yes to reckon with

agreed. id also like diego vs saunders or condit

by Austin Martin on Apr 19, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think he was too slow in LW, his fights against Guida and Stevenson showed fast hands. Diego can still be a contender in LW if he wanted to. A great challenger for Florian, Edgar and Maynard. The BJ demolition job was too much for him though, but I like him on both divisions.

So Diego is only two wins away from a title shot at welterweight? Man that division has been decimated.

diegos recent losses>> fitch, kos (with staph), uberpenn.

you cant discount penn for his loss to frankie because of its nature, and until we see the rematch

diegos lost to a top pound for pound fighter and two of the top 5 wws in the world. if he wins two, he definitely deserves it

I totally bought into that whole “Machida Era” thing and really wanted Machida to win, possibly to the point of total bias, and I absolutely could not give that fight to him. If the judges would have given Shogun every round I don’t think I would have argued against it.

I'd have given it to Shogun, but only by a whisker.

Yeah, there’s at least two rounds that I think you could argue justifiably for 10-10, or 10-9 to either fighter. To me, it was just as close as a fight can possibly get.

There have been a couple that I can recall in the last while, but only rarely. Just because judges don’t score rounds 10-10, though, doesn’t mean that 10-10 rounds don’t exist. It’s just that judges in MMA at present are largely uneducated and mildly crazy (Crosby).

I think Machida didn't lose...but he didn't win it outright...

but Shogun needed to do more than kick the champ. When the winner was announced I didn’t think about the controversy…I thought about whether Shogun beat the champ or just hit the champ…I thought the same thing would happen with Penn/Edgar but it (the fight) became stayed one-dimensional after the second round and Edgar just stayed the course. I agree with the earlier post that Machida has learned more from the first fight…and Shogun will carry the same game-plan. I LOVE MMA!

by RickNakedChoke on Apr 19, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

“To be the champ you have to BEAT the champ” is not in the Unified MMA Rulebook. Just ask Rampage.

by Polyhedron on Apr 19, 2010 9:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

and it’s a stupid principle. Literally true: Yes, barring some odd situation where there’s a vacant belt, the path to becoming champion is beating the current champion. But “beating” should only be taken as winning the fight.

There is no reason to score a round in a championship fight any differently than in any other. Imagine a judge saying to himself “well, round 2 was pretty close, and normally I’d say the challenger won it, but he wasn’t that dominant, so we’ll give it to the champ, even though he technically lost it.”

Or if they’re not looking at it that way, do they get to the end and say “Well, I have it 48-47 Shogun, but Machida’s the champ, so I’ll just change it to 48-47 Machida.”

You gotta do more than kick the champ to win...

I think you have to pry the championship away or win by KO…which is how this fight will end…Machida by KO and some leg kicks for good measure! LOL!

by RickNakedChoke on Apr 19, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

yea?

tell that to Rampage

by RevoReal on Apr 19, 2010 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry to be harsh

but this is a completely inane comment. You have to do more than kick the champ? What the heck does that even mean? What if you kick him 100 times, and he only punches you once? Does he still win because you didn’t “pry” it away from him or KO him? What constitutes prying? What if you kick him until the whole side of his body is hamburger and he’s limping around? That still doesn’t count for anything right?

You can argue that strikes to the head should count more in the scoring than to the leg or body, but leg and body blows can and do end fights, so you have to score them.

i have always liked Machida

it was really close and that is why we are getting to watch it a 2nd time and we should be thankful for seeing it so soon after their 1st fight. immediate rematch? Hell Yea!!! what was so suprising to me in that fight was shogun’s patience when he was timing the low kick so well in the 4th and 5th rounds and at one point during this time i was fearful of a stoppage. Machida was in a completely defensive posture and retreating, it was masterful. i think if shogun is %100 cardio wise his muay thai again will be a problem for Machida. i just dont see how Machida can make the kind of adjustments needed to beat shogun in this short time frame. so as a fan its gonna hurt a little watching shogun beat Machida.

I can't wait for this card.

I think Shogun will come out all guns blazing. I think he’s learned from the last time of letting it go to the judges. On the flip side, I think Machida will be expecting this and will plan accordingly. Shit, I have no idea who’s gonna win this one and honestly, I don’t care. Looking forward to it!

As for Kos / Daley, Kos would be an imbecile to stand with Daley. I think Kos really wants that title shot, so he’s not gonna get stupid. So long as he goes back to his wrestling, I think this is his to lose.

As for Kimbo, what can I say? He’ll go to sleep, but hopefully we get to see a Kimbo-plex before that happens.

The prmotion/hype and ultimately the narrative of the last fight was “Machida has never lost a round”… if you’re a judge how eager do you think you’d be to not give him any close round?

This time the narrative will be how everyone thought shogun won. and shit will work the same way only in the opposite direction.

If its the same fight 10 out of 10 times they give it to shogun. The onus is now on Machida to win convincingly.

If they both come in as the same fighters shogun is the safer bet.

I am so excited for this fight...

Shogun vs. Machida: The first fight I scored as a draw to be honest. After watching it I can’t comfortably give either 1 the 3rd round so I scored it a 10-10 with the first 2 going to Machida and the final 2 to Shogun. I have no idea who is going to win this fight, my heart says Shogun, but in my mind I see Lyoto taking home the decision less controversely.

Koscheck vs Daley: I can’t tell if Koscheck is being serious about standing with Daley. Part of me believed he would without even hearing that. That fight completely depends on Koscheck. There are 2 options for Koscheck 1) get knocked out in the first round, or 2) be smart and take it to the ground and probably finish him by GnP TKO.

I am debating a 2 man underdog parlay just to see if I can get lucky on Shogun and Daley.

Any of you think its worth around $100 per ticket for cheap seats plus hotel (and strip clubs) and about a five hour drive each way to attend this event? Or is it worth it to pony up and get better seats? Part of me wants to do it and part of me says wait until next time and get the tickets when they go on sale (cheaper than ebay.)

Ive never gone to a UFC event before but since Montreal is so much fun and this card has so much potential I am considering this one.

I hope Shogun doesn’t open up and get wild to avoid the fight going to a decision and gets caught by Lyoto’s counter striking. That would ruin my year,

does Shogun have the ‘blueprint’ now in chopping down Lyoto’s legs and body? or did Lyoto have a bad fight which will be corrected this time round?

No going to the judges this time

Both fighters have said it, they do not want this going to the judges again. Which means shogun will have to take more risks which will fall into Machida’s strengths.

Also aside from leg kicks, shogun was never close to finishing the fight. The leg kicks were having an accumalative effect but it took 5 rounds to cripple machida. Machida said in the second round I think and later on, he had shogun in a lot of trouble and close to finish, this time I can see him finishing the fight.

Either way, I am hoping for a great fight.
