Jim Ross talks Strikeforce on CBS:
The actions of many involved in the post game fiasco cannot be tolerated and penalties of significance should be doled out.
The number of corner men and/or the fighter's entourage allowed at cage side needs to be addressed and lessened.
Why was Miller even allowed to enter the cage in the first place. ...I have no issue with Mayhem Miller making a grandiose challenge but I do feel how it was handled by all involved was bush league and not a good thing for MMA in general.
Where was the Fedor personality profile or highlight package? Isn't Fedor allegedly the baddest of the bad and if so why was his persona not enhanced on CBS? Are there issues with Fedor's 'people' or was this an oversight that saw Strikeforce's biggest, MMA, mainstream star ignored?

Everytime he says something about MMA
I really can’t help but agree, JR knows what he’s talking about.

So if JR's such an MMA badass...
Why not get his ass signed to WEC so Goldie and Rogan dont have to commentate. I would love to hear JR commentate mma. I bet his life is owned by mcmahon though….
Probably too strong a pro wrestling association
I can definitely see why UFC would want to avoid that.
yea
A lot of mainstream still make comments about MMA not being on the level. I saw the comment section on Fark after the Strikeforce brawl article was posted there and several people made “wrasslin” comments talking about it as if it were as scripted as WWE

I agree
Even if they gave him a back office job you know MMA blog sites would run headlines of ‘WWE execs take over UFC.’

I’d love to hear Mike Rowe commentate for UFC or WEC

Joey Styles calling UFC in full ECW mode… that would be so many kinds of awesome I can’t name them all!

On top of no promo for Fedor...
Was there promo for ANY future SF events during the broadcast last night? If there were I missed them.
another interesting point..
ya I didn’t see anything for Overeem vs Rogers.

they did the same quick thing they usually do on showtime where they highlight the next few shows (quickly) including any upcoming boxing fights. I’m not sure if they mentioned boxing this time, i wasn’t really paying attention.
They did say that they would be back on CBS in the fall, which leads me to believe that talks with Fedor are not progressing well, because I can’t really see Fedor on Showtime in June.
All they needed to do was show a picture of Overeem and the casual fan would have been like “Holy fuck! That guy is a beast, I need to see him fight!”

I agree with Ross except the part about not having a problem with Miller challenging Shields. I mean, I admire the ability of Miller to market himself despite the burden of being a mediocre fighter who last big win was almost 4 years ago, but Jake’s a top 10 p4p fighter and Mayhem isn’t even top 25 in his weight class.

he was only on the undercard because there were three title fights on the main card of a 2 hour network tv broadcast. I’m sure they would have loved for at least one of the fights to have not gone the distance so they could have shown the Miller fight in it’s entirety.
Hey Pete
R.I.P.
I’m sure they would have loved for at least one of the fights to have not gone the distance so they could have shown the Miller fight in it’s entirety.
That might be why they fed him an easy fight, made a big deal of telling everyone they’d show highlights from the fight, and then actually took the time to show the highlights from a completely irrelevant fight despite having a disastrous network show that went 40 minutes past its allotted time.
I guess Miller was out sick for the class where they talk about backing up your trash talk and outsized persona by fighting and beating quality opponents. Oh well, if you can’t be a top fighter like Frank Mir, at least you can talk like one and have the fan following of one.

I don’t understand why JR’s comments are on this site after every event. Can someone please explain?
by god-damn long hair on Apr 18, 2010 5:01 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Because he's smart, is a quasi-mainstream personality, and the people who write for the site like him?
He’s a fan of the sport and makes almost always very accurate with what he says about the sport. So because he’s a wrestling personality, that automatically discredits him? The UFC especially is based off the WWE ppv model when it comes to selling fights. Emphasizing storylines between fighters (Tito/SHamrock, Tito/Liddell, Rampage/Rashad) to create interest amongst fans. Much like wrestling MMA has “heel” like personas on their roster that fans hate want to see their faces bashed in or see someone shut it up. Just look at guys like Mir and Koscheck they’re masters of it. So I think JR would have an understanding when it comes to promoting events. To go further what did he say in this post or in his UFC 112 blog that was way off base?
You were definitely once a wrestling fan and are insecure about it so you go out of your way to hate on it and act all MMAcho about it.

I just found asking this question in the comments, an easy way to have the question answered. You’re thinking I’m asking this question, while trying to discredit what he’s said at the same time. I’m not implying this, it was just a simple question. And yes I am an insecure ex-wrestling fan, to the core Brian Bobby, to the core.. Dude ur funny. (act all MMAcho about it.) Hahaha.

The brawl last night was a WWE type stunt that the WWE would have done better.

Reminded me of when Tyson was involved in the WWE for a bit and him and all of his entourage jumped Steve Austin. Whats worse is that you know narrow minded people who don’t understand MMA are going to compare last nights incident to pro wrestling.

JR:
Strikeforce on CBS was an interesting TV show Saturday night that I watched live and then watched again later in the evening. Was Strikeforce the most compelling MMA TV show that I can remember seeing in the past few weeks? No. Was I sorry that I watched it? Absolutely not.
The talk of the show, which one can assume that some novice, MMA fans likely thought was lackluster, was the post main event brawl that no one saw coming as evidenced by how it was shot by CBS and by how the broadcasters reacted.
Hopefully, Strikeforce and CBS will take Saturday night’s experiences and learn from the show that ran too long and ended with unmanaged chaos.
Bottom line is that if CBS earns a good or better TV rating within Men 18-49 years of age that some of the broadcasts blemishes will be forgiven.

If its true Jr is gone from wwe I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns his blogs to mma a lot more. Jr is a fan of the “sport” or pro wrestling aka catch wrestling, and I’m sure he loves the ground game associated with mma. I agree that he seems to make very valid points in his blogs. I’m sure he is catering to the hardcore fans though, as he knows most mma “marks” hate pro wrestling and automatically write anyone associated with it off. However I think he will never work for a company associated w mma, as a colour guy anyway. The first wrongly named move he would say would cause the fans to chew him up and spit him out, w no bbq sauce. And his mama wouldn’t approve of all the unscripted violence. BOOMER SOONER! Tyson & Austin! Austin & Tyson! Its a slobberknocker! That jezzebell sunny! Ok, I’m done lol.

Jim Ross
This is coming from a guy who works in Pro Wrestling! I must say this is so bad for STRIKEFORCE that heads must roll on this one.If CBS decide to have another STRIKEFORCE show, don’t expect none of those brawlers to be on it,or in the building.Scott Coker has failed and he needs to act now.Whoever threw a kick or punch,is suspened for 1 year. The whole incident should never had happen.Strikeforce allowed to many people in the cage at one time. There’s no reason for 10 members of one camp to be in the cage. This should be limited to 3,and this it.

Thanks to his stroke, I can never understand what Jim Ross has to say. I think many (including Ross) think that Mayhem just showed up and not realized that he is a part of Hendo’s camp. Just as Shields had his camp in the cage with him post fight, so did Hendo. I think the real issue stems from Nick and Nate Diaz. I love watching Nick fight and think he’s a great fighter, but he’s just too high strung and is a liability.
Why promote Fedor if they don’t even know what event he’ll be on?
