Today on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: Strikeforce Results, WEC 48 and Bellator Talk

Live streaming video by Ustream

Remember, our new time slot from now on: Sundays 9 to 11pm EST.

Today on "MMA Nation" we'll be breaking down last night's Strikeforce card and taking your calls:

- Will Jake Shields stay with Strikeforce?

- Is there a future for Strikeforce on CBS?

- Whose stock went up the most with their performance?

We'll also be making some announcements about some MMA coming to the DC area.

"MMA Nation" will air tonight 9:00pm EST to 11:00pm EST on 106.7 The Fan. To listen live over the Internet, go to The Fan's website and click "Listen Live".

I'm also on Twitter: @mmanation.

AS A NEW FEATURE: We'll stream the show live over UStream.tv. Here's my channel. I'll embed the live stream player in this post when the show begins. There will be a chat window as well where I will field your questions, so be sure to send them in. I should be able to moderate the discussions.

"MMA Nation" is also available by podcast on iTunes. For now, iTunes is disabled, but the show will be posted on the station's website soon afterward. I'll be sure to put a post up when they're ready to go. And when we're back on iTunes, I'll put up a link to that as well.

Number to call: 800-636-1067

Email here.

Talk to you then.

My big question for you Luke, is, did you think that Shields would be able to take down, pass guard, and mount Hendo so handily? I got much respect for Shields’ game, but I never thought he could take Hendo down, out-scramble, and cut through his ground defense like he did.

Shields really impressed me. He stayed a lot more active on top than he did with Miller, he wasn’t raining blows like crazy, but I don’t think he was going to TKO Hendo no matter how hard he hit him, so might as well just ride him. I think Shields vs. GSP is a marketable fight, and would be great because GSP will be looking to impress with his kickboxing, something he hasn’t done lately. I think Shields wants to go to the UFC, and will be getting some big money for doing so.

Big winner-UFC. Big loser Strikeforce.

Dana must have been rolling on the ground laughing after Shields defeated Hendo. Hendo’s loss justified DW’s reluctance to pay him the kind of money that SF ponied up. To add insult to injury, Shields will probably jump ship to the UFC, once again giving the UFC the best fighters.

Aoki was supposed to be the only lightweight who could give BJ any competition (until BJ lost of course). Now that the Aoki mystique is gone, everyone considers the UFC to have most of the best LWs.

Many people considered Moussasi to be the best LHW in the world with King Mo not even in the top 10. Now, everyone considers Moussasi to be over-rated. Once again, no LHWs in Strikeforce are considered to be at the level of the UFC LHWs (except maybe King M0).

The disgusting display by the Gracie camp after the fight may have also jeopardized Strikeforce’s contract with CBC.

Winner-UFC. Loser-Strikeforce.

One MAJOR request...

Can someone PLEASE moderate the room?! Cause we had some random trolls that insisted on ruining the chatroom for everybody. It defeats the purpose if someone is copying and pasting Sarah Palin’s GOP speech

It’s just hard to follow the conversation when we only hear your response to the callers’ questions.

Yea, not being able to hear the call-ins pretty much throws things off big time. Sometimes it’s just an annoyance, but the example that just happened: I sat here for a couple minutes of silence only to hear finally “good observation, thanks” and then on to next caller. Pretty weird.

Just because Mo spoke well shouldn’t change your opinion on him as a fighter. If you are knowledgeable enough of fighters and their games you can see the weaknesses and strengths of each fighter regardless of what they say.

Where’s Bader ranked? Cause I think Mo should be ranked just below him, seeing as how they’re essentially the same with a power edge going to Mo and a striking edge going to Bader.

Lawal will probably benefit from Mousasi being rated higher than Vera or Jardine and catapult higher than Bader or Jones.

by lowellthehammer on Apr 18, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Bader and Mo seem very similar . Both great wrestling perhaps Mo is better while Bader has a little better striking. Both have terrible terrible cardio.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I had Mousassi as the #9 LHW, I have dropped Mousasi out of the top ten and King Mo isn’t in the top ten either right now. I also dropped Hendo off the top LHW ten as well. With two spots opening up I put Rich Franklin in and then the final spot came up and I valued Jon Jones, Ryan Bader, and King Mo and thought that Jon Jones earned the spot and deserved it more than the other two.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Mo isn’t as big as I thought he would be. I think Bader dwarfs him. Mo would be a fool to start jumping in with these monster HWs nowadays. Back in the day sure but today you have to be crazy to put yourself at disadvantages like that.

Jon Jones is a much, much, MUCH bigger prospect. Mo has great power and phenomenal takedowns, but Jones has incredible takedowns as well, rangy striking, he’s younger, and he’s got a ton more upside. Not even close IMO.

I think Jones would have stood with Mousasi and opened the door for Mousasi to work his strengths more than Mo allowed him to. But I think Jones would have looked to finish more than Mo did on the ground.

by xDieseLx on Apr 18, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt Jones will ever keep another fight on the feet for long again. There’s no point. He is at a considerable advantage in someone’s guard. Working with a guy like Greg Jackson he wouldn’t allow Jones to " stand and bang " unless there was a reason to.

Dana has tried to make deals, but I guess they want too much control over the product and the UFC doesn’t want to give up control.

I think it would be awesome to see them on network TV myself. But CBS/Strikeforce has also shown some reasons why letting an experienced MMA company retain control over their product.

Luke, do you follow other sports, because "using the media" to further business ends and "spreading disinformation" is really really common, especially when trade deadlines approach. Also, I’m a huge fan of yours, so I’m very familiar with your feelings about the average mma fan, feelings that most hardcores and the media pundits share. Don’t you think that Dana is in a delicate position with his fan base and the media covers the sport? I mean if the media thinks that 90% if Dana’s customers are idiots, then isn’t it inevitable that when he communicates with his customers, the media is going to disagree with what he says and how he says it?

These guys are crazy. You should go to the UFC when your at your peak. Mousassi after beating Babula and Sokodjou could have got some serious cash . The interest for him was at a peak and he could have worked out a good deal and made some serious money.

Shields would be a fool not to go to the UFC right now. His interest is at an all time high and he can negotiate himself into some real money. What is he making at Strikeforce right now?

I think Shields can easily get a 75 to show 75 to win deal. Seeing as he would be dealing with stiff competition I think he would be better off signing for 100 k flat rate considering who he is going to be fighting .

King Mo looked good but not that good. He should wait a little longer until his hands and cardio catch up a little bit. Then he should go there as well.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2010 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

I agree about going to UFC when you are peaking and Shields and Mo should definitely make an attempt. I think that sure Mousasi would have done better contract wise going before this fight; but I think the UFC would still take him even now.
