Mayhem Miller Embarrasses Self, Strikeforce, CBS, and MMA as a Whole
Wow, what a shame. After Jake Shields puts on the most impressive victory of his career over an MMA legend someone decided to let Mayhem Miller come in the cage asking for a rematch and then all hell breaks loose. It was an exciting, back-and-forth fight with Henderson starting like a bat out of hell and almost knocking Shields out in the first minute. Shields was able to recover and control the fight from the second round on with his amazing BJJ and takedown skills against the bigger Henderson. It was by far the most competitive fight of the evening with all 3 title fights going the distance. And then disaster struck. With the Diaz brothers and Gilbert Melendez in Shields' corner Jason 'Mayhem' Miller shows up in the cage asking Shields for a rematch. Miller is acting aggressive from the start and the pushing and shoving ensues. Fists started flying, bodies all over the place, kicks, punches, etc., and then CBS cuts the feed. Only those in the arena know the extent of what happened but the fact of the matter is this was a black eye to the sport as a whole. Gus Johnson said "sometimes this happens in MMA" but I can never recall something like this happening, and especially not on network TV. After the long, drawn out decisions and the lack of overall star power on this card one has to think this will be Strikeforce's final foray onto the network airwaves, with Mayhem Miller's juvenile act serving as the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

Hey Eric Exaggeration. . .
. . . good job rushing out a fan post. You beat almost all of us to the punch.
Did Shields’ corner not come one a little strong? Just a bit?
Remember, it’s Nick Diaz that Big John held down. Not a level-headed guy like Machida.
I love me some me.
yeah they did...
however you know the diaz brothers are then to begin with. do you think they are there to have some tea. Im pretty sure they would fight thier own mother if they had the chance too. Miller choose a horrible time to do that plain and simple.
and what is the stupid part? the tea? I will agree to that. How about to have some rockstar energy drink instead?
Miller cannot be blamed for promotion
while he certainly disrespected Shields, he did not instigate a fight. Hell, he couldn’t even get out a second sentence.
It’s irresponsible to blame an assault on the victim. That is the stupid part.

why? because theyre teamate is trying to enjoy his victory and some asshole comes in and disrespects you. make no mistake diaz isnt to blame for any of this, mayhem is
by montiel3 on Apr 18, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
im agreeing with you sir montiel. they were doing what good teammates do. Did they come on strong…yes. would that of ever happened if mayhem didnt get in his face….no. So in my mind mayhem has nobody but himself to blame for this mess.
its all good
i was just getting my 2 cents in regarding medium nogs comment about coming on to strong. I just didnt word my disapproval of mayhem in the proper way.
or as a guy in delaware said to me one nite...
“you have one of those innnernets.” But for people to not realize miller is a fiend for the spotlite is just absurd. It was jakes shields biggest win of his career and here comes mr. bi-colored hair looking for more camera time.
You guys aren't thinking.
Mayhem was building heat. Same as Nick Diaz did on KJ Noons at EliteXC.
Happens all the time. But streetbrawls, including 7 on 1 attacks and kicks to the head – they don’t.
This is why the Diaz brothers can’t hold a spot in a promotion for longer than a few fights. They’re methheads without the meth.
http://www.vancouversun.com/mma
there is a slight difference . diaz comingout to talk to ky was planned by strikeforce. this was something mayhem did on his own.. to interrupt the initial conversation with the champion. your right that the streetbrawl didnt need to happen but you know if you think about it maybe mayhem should have toldhis corner he was oign to do something that might get everyone pissedoff.
brawls happen in every sport i an think of except ping pong and curling
Brawls indeed do happen in every sport.
But most of them don’t have to fight past the stigma of being ‘human cockfighting’ every time someone tries to put on an event. MMA does, which is why everyone is supposed to be a little bit smarter, and a little bit less ‘gangsta’ than your average NBA idiot.
http://www.vancouversun.com/mma
Nick did the same thing to KJ Noons, and IMO gilbert started the shovin and when mayhem shoved him back (while laughin) Jake pushed mayhem and thats where it escalated from

I’ve watched this this multiple times on Tivo and thats exactly what happened.

That's what happened.
Melendez is at fault. Asking for rematches is part of the business. Seems OP is a jackass.
by Robert Livingston on Apr 18, 2010 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
asking for rematches is one thing...
doing it in the middle of a victory speech and completly butting in is another. Mayhem likes the spotlite and we all know that. im sure if strikeforce already had a rematch planned they would of waited until after the interview then shields and mayhem could of faced off and what not.
So let me get this straight:
Interrupting an interview > gang beating of one guy by seven guys, with kicks to a guy being held down.
Gotcha.
http://www.vancouversun.com/mma
No
What he did happens in this business, too. Shields’ camp should have reacted more professionally.

Well if you would’ve have took the time you would have put something out that was factual.

It’s easy to say, “Mayhem’s stupidity.”
Without breaking down the shoving match that turned into eight guys beating on Miller, all you’ve really got is the same contrived post-fight interview that the UFC puts on every time they line up a number one contender.
Mayhem came as close to finishing Shields in the fifth of his fight as Henderson did in the first. Nobody would put those two on the same level. It’s not patently absurd for him to be in the ring post-fight if he wants a rematch.
Slow your roll.
I love me some me.
It’s been half an hour since the incident. The unedited footage of who was really turned the confrontation from theatrics into legitimate confrontation. This type of instant outrage is douchey and unnecessary.
Awesome post!!!!
I love me some me.
I'll get my tin foil hat
Let me guess, Dana White had a hand in this, yes?

Fighters come in the ring all the time after fights to hype potential matches. The only thing that was different here was that Mayham got jumped. O and by the way where does saying “when do i get my rematch” translate into disrespect?
by logan00 on Apr 18, 2010 12:23 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
how about interupting his interview, mayhem couldve waited til it was over to hype a potential rematch.
Agreed. But, did he deserve to get pounded by eight strangers for it?
I think smarmy BE fanposts are a much better outlet for populist malcontent.
I love me some me.
So then we are in agreement: Mayhem should not have been beaten up by strangers for attempting to hype (in however douchey a manner) another fight with Shields.
I love me some me.
Technically, NO we arent in agreement. He did deserve what happened. Mayhem knew what he was getting himself into, hes an asshole plain and simple
You literally just said he should not have gotten beaten up by eight strangers on national television.
I love me some me.
You just literally asked if he deserved to be beaten up by 8 strangers. How about this one, is what mayhem did disrespectful to jake shields?
So we agree that he SHOULD not have been beaten like a North Jersey fistpumper bounced out of Bar A.
YOU believe that he deserved it for interrupting Shields’ post-fight interview.
I believe that, no matter what Mayhem said, beating him up on national television, in the moment Strikeforce is attempting to prove itself sans-Fedor, laying hands on the man likens our beloved sport to the vision that ninnys have when they call it savage (and unacceptable on television or in its very existence) more than necessary.
I love me some me.

“beaten like a North Jersey fistpumper bounced out of a Bar A.” Is hardly what id call what happened to miller. Its really not that hard to understand, yes i think he deserved what happened to him. Do i think it should have happened? No it shouldnt have happened, it was embarrising and ruined what shouldve been shields happiest moment in his mma career. Could it have been avoided? Absofukinlutely, Mayhem chose to interrupt shields post fight interview by standing behind shields with a smug look on his face and every intent to take away from his victory. Mayhem is to blame here chief
Look, right now, at the TOP headline on BE:
“Mayhem Miller CRIMINALLY ASSAULTED”
(emphasis mine)
I love me some me.
Wow Brent writes up a hate spewing piece about the Diaz brothers. (emphasis taken) Nice way to avoid an argument you cant win.
Wow. Turn a difference of opinion into a differetiation between good and evil.
Take advice below.
I love me some me.
since we are getting immature now with pictures and insults.
youre adopted and youre parents dont even love you
I insulted us both with that picture; you broached things on a personal level.
Try this on for size:
David Spade is embarrassed to be from the Arizona. As an everything AZ fan, I think that would hurt.
I love me some me.
Uh oh, son. You takin’ it where it need not go.
YO momma so stanky, something-something blah-blah King Mo’s post-fight Face Sweat.
I love me some me.

Cutting a guy off right at the beginning of his post fight interview after the biggest win of his career isn't disrespectful?
It's disrespectful.
And?
Does anyone really think it was worth it for that disrespect to be repaid in a way that puts the entire sport into a bad light (or even worse light than it usually is)?
Was it really necessary to respond to ‘disrespect’ in a way that could cost Strikeforce its network TV deal?
Or maybe, by virtue of that, see it shut down?
Disrespect you’re supposed to be able to deal with without cutting your own throat.
http://www.vancouversun.com/mma
When did I say ANY of that?
The original question was “where does saying "when do i get my rematch" translate into disrespect?” and I answered it; I didn’t say ANYTHING about the ensuing brawl.
How in the blue fuck was Miller acting aggressive?
Is smiling a sign of aggression now? Do we need to bust out some body language interpreters from Animal Planet or something?
All of the shoving and otherwise physical contact was initiated by Shields camp, period.
Associate Writer - WindyCityGridiron.com
Did you not see him push Shields twice (not with his hands, with his body) while trying to get his ugly mug to the microphone and on camera?
I don’t care who threw the first punch or who shoved who. Mayhem deserved what he got for inserting his attention-seeking butt into the greatest moment of Jake Shields’ career.
by MMAEruption on Apr 18, 2010 12:34 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Miller should have at least had the decency to let Shields finish his interview.

It doesn't matter if it was.
A gang assault is worse.
Hurting the sport is worse.
Killing Strikeforce will be worse.

Miller was not in the wrong thats just fact.
