Do you feel that eating meat is a necessity for being masculine or tough? I’m asking not because I’m vegetarian (I don’t eat a ton of meat, but that’s mainly because it’s tough and expensive to find grass-fed), but I’m interested in how people view masculinity.
Like being disappointed? Sweet! Follow @teddwelch on Twitter!
I don’t think it’s manly just to eat meat; but it does seem like a lot of the vegetarians I know are a bit scrawny so I can imagine if that’s the majority of vegans out there then what the perception might be. So maybe the goal is just to show some strength and muscle more-so than manliness.
Would be funny if Brock Lesnar ran in and ripped a Jake Shields mannequin in half in an ad for the meat industry though.

Puss huh?
If he’s a puss your a truly disrespectful dude. If you gave a fuck you’d watch a movie on factory farms. But you don’t b/c it’s inconvenient so ignorance you enjoy. That’s you man.
Hypothetical, take your favorite animal in your history (dog or cat) put a chain around it’s hind leg and string it over a tree or something about 10 feet high. Now take a hammer and break the dogs hind leg that the chains around, cus that’s a regular occurance at these farms. Then slit it’s throat and watch it thrash back and forth for about 12 minutes depending on how good you got in there with the 12" blade. This sucks.
Cows and pigs are as intelligent as any animal in any capitalistic society. Dont think they don’t feel the absolute terror of being next up, when in line to be killed. There in a line of 20 cows watching the ones infront of them thrash back in forth and blood flowing everywhere while hanging from a chain. These animals are shaking uncontrollably with fright waiting for there pitiful destiny. And you call Shields a puss, honestly I laughed my ass off. Good job of doing you brotha!!!

Bleeding out like that
is actually a religious thing, Jewish I believe. The animals need to be bled out like that for the meat to be considered Kosher. Are people not allowed to practice their faith now?
by Patrick John McGreevy on Apr 17, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Nothing religious there!
That type of slaughter is common and an easy way out, so to speak. You wanna talk religious slaughter, gotcha. Kosher Meat. On a factory farm designed for kosher meat goes a little like this. Cows are prodded (electrocuted) into runs, where turning around is not an option and going forward towards the definition of inhumanity is the only option. The cows are prodded so they move down the run. And the men yell all the while prodding them down the runs. So the cows are absolutely experiencing terror. They understand that there’s nothing good going on. So 15 – 20 cows in a line being prodded towards a machine. Machine resembles the death star from star wars and is bout 15’ by 15’. So the cow in the on-deck circle has just watched with terror his future. The cow is then prodded by up to 5 prod’s to get him to enter the machine. He steps in and the machine clamps down on his body so he can’t move at all. The machine makes a loud noise and flips the cow upside down. One of the criteria for being kosher is that the butcher cannot put a hand on the animal. So the animal is turned upside down with only it’s throat exposed. A man dressed in a bee keeper suit covered in blood head to toe, takes his blade and slits the cows throat by it’s chest and what happens next resembles a fire hydrant being opened up, blood goes everywhere (shoots vertically about 10 feet). He then cuts it by the mouth and connects the two cuts. Pushes the seperated meat (4 inches deep and 18 inches long) with his knife to the floor and the contraption filps back over. It opens up and the cow tumbles out to the right of the machine. He crashes into previously slaughtered cows, stands up and suffocates to death in about a minute and change. That’s religious slaughter right there.

There not simply hanging and bleeding out. They’re killed and hanging on a chain which is connected to a conveyor belt type thing. Conveyor belt moves when the operator wishes. Having no regard to religious practices. Just doing their job. And truly, I feel just as bad for the people who have to endure going to this fucked up job as the animals, almost. Anyways, their next dipped in scolding hot water to clean its hide. And most cows are still alive when this happens. It’s not religious.

Im the furthest thing from a vegetarian
But i can respect this. Inhumane treatment blows. Whether you eat meat or not, you should be able to get behind more ethical treatment of the animals. Aside from that, animals that are treated better are typically healthier for you.
Also, the video title mentions “vegan health.” Is Jake a vegetarian or a vegan?

I have no problem with Jake being a vegetarian for ethical reasons, but I find it laughable that he associates himself with the single largest private euthanizer of domestic animals (PETA).
I’m all for animal rights, but PETA is run hypocrital jackasses who are more than willing to kill their precious animals when they have a negative impact their bottom line, or are perfectly willing to use animal tested and animal based medications when they get ill.

They kill animals because they can’t take care of a million stray dogs. It’s humane and if you knew anything about PETA you would know they advocate spading/neutering to prevent overpopulation and the need for euthanization.

The problem is that PETA euthanizes animals at a much higher rate than other pet shelters. Even your local county run shelter probably has a lower kill rate than the 85% PETA shelters average. Many privately run shelters have got their numbers down into the single digits.
You would think that an organization that is all about the sanctity of animal life would go all out to find those pets new homes like other progressive shelters. Instead, they slaughter them by the truckloads because it is cheaper than doing community outreach programs and putting people on staff whose job is to find new homes for the pets. They would rather kill the puppies and kittens and spend their money on celebrity endorsements.
Not too mention how hilariously sexist all of Peta’s adverts are. Peta is the worst.

Misunderstanding euthanization
There are way too many dogs/cats in the United States, and not enough people to care for them. Everyone should spay/neuter their pets, and if you want a new pet you should go to a shelter.
Euthanizing animals is sadly the last resort, and acting like it is done out of malice towards animals, or that it represents hypocrisy for PETA, is a complete misrepresentation.
It is hypocrisy
in that PETA supporters protest other groups which euthanize animals.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
I don’t have a problem with euthanization as a last resort. I have a problem with it as an economically driven first resort. PETA euthanizes over 85% of the pets that enter their shelters. That is WAY above the average and many of the more progressive shelters have had great success with community outreach programs in boosting their adoption rate and have either adopted no kill policies or have got their kill rates down in the single digits.
You would expect an animal rights organization to have a lower kill rate than your local dogcatcher, but the facts say otherwise. Rather than spending their money on aggressive adoption campaigns, they spend it flashy billboards and executive compensation.

Poor plants...
They are alive too. All they want to do is live, grow, and proliferate like us and these cruel vegetarians come along and rip them out of their homes. Plants are creating oxygen, amongst many other things that make our lives much more enjoyable, and this is how we respect them – by eating them?

Didn't know that
I just looked that up and was surprised to see. But really, whether a living thing feels pain is not a valid test to determine if it is humane to kill it. The fact is, we are still killing something.
Vegetarians who think like this need to get off their high horse. If you just don’t eat meat because you don’t like it or have been raised otherwise, cool.
by baswoot on Apr 17, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
This is a silly argument
A desire to avoid inflicting unnecessary pain and fear on animals is the very definition of “humane.” A plant has no brain and no nervous function, and cannot feel pain or fear, at least not as we understand it. A pig, which is much smarter than your dog, can feel those things, so drawing the line dividing what you kill and what you don’t somewhere between pigs and plants is not only valid, but entirely humane.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
A plant has no brain and no nervous function, and cannot feel pain or fear, at least not as we understand it.
This is key. Hooking a plant to a polygraph does not prove anything beyond it not having a nervous system that can be read reliably by a polygraph.
And even the polygraph detected an electrical reaction to other living things in the room.
Some humans don't either
so can we murder and eat them?
they may not feel pain
but millions of insects and animals die n the harvesting of plants.

We eat with one girl who tells the waiter she is a vegan everytime she orders. Even when we go to the places that cater to vegans and have an entire page of the menu with vegan entrees with a big giant “100% VEGAN” header over it. So annoying.

I worked in the poultry industry for years.
I personally had to cull at least 100 chickens a day. I didn’t like it, but I needed the money. Not because they were sick, but because they were too big or too small. That’s right, farmers want only to grow a chicken that takes precisely 10 minutes to cook. That’s where I started questioning things. Then, the farm that I worked on had a breakout of myto plasmic gasplagia(I think that’s how you spell it) and out came the medicines. Shortly after that there were a series of avian flu out breaks and the poultry industry in my region took huge hits. And all I could think of was that the farmer’s( all over the world, not just my region) had dug themselves their own hole. By consigning themselves to pharmaceutical companies and completely over medicating, and more often than not, completely unnecessarily medicating their animals. Aside from shoving 28000 birds in a single barn, what the hell did they expect. I also recommend checking out Bovine Growth Hormone.
I am not a vegetarian, the fact is I love steak, and despite my experiences I still eat chicken and turkey. But, I have seriously stepped back my meat, poultry intake because of what I have witnessed first hand. I encourage everyone to research the food that they eat and not take for granted it’s nutritional value. And whatever you do, don’t eat farmed fish.

I say don’t eat farmed fish(I guess I mean farmed salmon), because of the allegations that net pond ocean farms of salmon are contaminating and infecting naturally migrating schools of salmon with a deadly form of sea lice. Affecting natural fish stocks on both N. American seaboards. But again I say, allegations. I make my decision not to eat farmed salmon based on my own research on the subject.

I’m not a vegetarian, but I do try to avoid eating meat that’s been raised with a ton of antibiotics, cruelty, and bad living conditions, partly because it’s decent, but mostly because it’s better for me. Not eating food that has been raised in its own feces is important.
Peta does some things badly, but in this ad, they’re pushing a reasonable message in a reasonable way. Good for Jake Shields for being a part of that.

I cut out hamburger meat
when I learned they use ammonia as a filler (to supposedly help reduce ecoli outbreaks). Which sucks, because I love me a good In-N-Out double double animal style.
I love meat, but I don’t like the idea of them shoving chemicals in there that are going to end up being cancer in 20 yrs from now. This year, I’m going in halves with a friend to go to a local farmer and pay for an entire cow to be cut up and put my share in a freezer. I’m curious how that will work out in regards to cost and flavor.
They don’t use ammonia as a filler. They use ammonia as a cleaner of the tools and blades that cut and butcher your meat, possibly. But, rest assured, unless someone is trying to poison you or you put it there yourself, there is no ammonia in your meat. Your ground beef or hamburger meat is exactly that and nothing else, probably.

we’re in a world of 6 billion or so people. Logistically, it is not sustainable for everyone to eat 10ounces of steak per day (Mostly because of the water required to grow feed etc) Do we even need to talk about over harvesting of marine animals? The simple fact is that you are doing your fellow earth inhabitants a favor when you eat lower on the food chain. You’re under no obligation to do so other than maintaining sustainable eating habits for future generations.

The same argument can be applied to eating organic veggies.
It takes more resources, transportation, and land to sustain the same level of production compared to non-organically grown products. You are doing a disservice to your common man by eating organic veggies.
Not taking a shot at you, but just throwing that tidbit out there.
