Ohhhhh shit

I guess Tito cracked his skull again or something :/

To be brutally honest though, Chuck/ Tito III just isn’t a fight i’m interested in. Liddell/ Franklin has at least the appeal of being a matchup that hasn’t yet happened.

So many questions.

Is there a separate WEC event being put on in Canada? Or are they just going to mention UFC/WEC together from now on so that WEC gets more recognition? Or are WEC fighters going to start showing up on UFC cards?

Well that’s disapointing, I really wanted to see Fraklin vs. Couture that’s always been a dream match for me. While Liddell vs. Franklin would have been great 2 years ago, Chuck is done now and this will be a pretty handy win for Rich. Add to the fact that seeing Chuck pummell Tito is always fun this isn’t really good news, but who knows Chuck does have heavy hands so maybe he can land something early like Vitor did and put Rich out because that’ll be the only chance he has to win nowadays.

So, does Coture/Toney get added to UFC 116 now with the announcement of this fight?

by RobertGBP on Apr 12, 2010 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

Buyrates, my dear friend. With Lesnar/Carwin and Couture/Toney, the UFC might be trying to break 100’s record.

by RobertGBP on Apr 12, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Quick question

How is it that Sylvia/Mercer is a “freak show fight” but Couture/Toney is considered a competitive matchup?

by John Nash on Apr 12, 2010 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh shit

That question is in no way quick and you know it.

by Neil Manich on Apr 12, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Long answer: Sylvia is a painfully mediocre stand-up fighter and Mercer is a way, way, waaaaaaaaaaay over the hill boxer. Couture on the other hand is Couture, and Toney is at least not as distanced from relevancy in the boxing world as Mercer is.

Short answer: The UFC is promoting it.

"Sometimes hype just ain't enough." - Jens Pulver on his win over BJ Penn

by lowellthehammer on Apr 12, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh this is why. Couture = wrestler

Slyvia = subpar standup

by p123 on Apr 12, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Mercer is an over-the-hill ex HW boxing champ with some mma and kickboxing experience with the power to end a fight with a single punch (proved that) who was matched up against a mma fighter who looked to stand, thus giving him a chance.

Toney is an over-the-hill ex boxing champ with zero mma experience, notorious for having little power and a rolling shoulder defense that is Ill-suited to defend against kicks and takedowns taking on an mma fighter that loves to take his opponent to the ground.

Which one seems like the more competitive matchup?

by John Nash on Apr 12, 2010 10:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The correct answer is… Sylvia/Mercer was just a shit fight, not a freak show.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on Apr 12, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Mercer way more old and busted than Toney

by Stillberry on Apr 12, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Busted meaning damage in fights?

Or busted for PED use? Because he’s way more busted on the latter.

by Rayce. on Apr 12, 2010 9:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

as with all things in life, there are levels of freak show.

this is a freak show, but to reach Sylvia/mercer, it needs to get rejected by an athletic commission, moved a few times, and switched from boxing to mma the day before to reach the full level of that disaster. Which I still think was more of a bad idea than a freak show.

by Phildo on Apr 12, 2010 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The Silvia/Mercer match was also signed with some fucked up abomination of boxing rules mixed with some MMA rules. Basically a boxing match with 4oz gloves in a cage.

by YoungGun on Apr 13, 2010 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow, nice undercard...

Looking at the other card, if all those fights come through, that’s going to be a badass show!

When you’ve got these fights probably airing as dark matches:
Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald*
Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel*
Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman*

The card is pretty strong.

by Jason H. on Apr 12, 2010 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

Condit/Macdonald is confirmed for the main card.

I highly doubt they would shunt the only Canadians on the card (Macdonald and Claude Patrick) to the prelims. Condit has enough of a following from the WEC and two great UFC fights to be on the main card.

UFC is to Larry Fitzgerald as Strikeforce is to Plaxico Burress. One is the most dominant in their league, while the other shoots itself in the midst of progress.

Other than the winner of Fitch/Alves being one step closer to a title shot (AKA another GSP loss)

Paulo Thiago slowly climbing up the ranks as a WW contender, Tyson Griffin/Evan Dunham looking to make their case as a lightweight contender, and Rory Macdonald looking to beat a tough and seasoned veteran in Carlos Condit to prove he’s a very good prospect……this card is irrelevant.

UFC is to Larry Fitzgerald as Strikeforce is to Plaxico Burress. One is the most dominant in their league, while the other shoots itself in the midst of progress.

I follow the sport because I love the sport. Title or contender picture bouts are just bonuses. Some of the best matches ever have been completely irrelevant if rankings are what you care about. Also, a dramatic and exciting fight will MAKE a matchup relevant even if it didn’t seem to be going in.
