After watching last nights fight with Anderson Silva and Demian Maia, I couldn't help but wonder what Silva is thinking. As a coach of wrestling for the last couple of years I have been finding that most elite compition comes down more to metal make up more than anything else. Most of these fighters have been taught the same techniquies while training. It is Anderson Silva (AS for now on) who is doing things that nobody can even think of and get away with it.
I want to know what AS mental make up is? What makes him train so hard? How can he put his chin out and still be able to punch with so much power? He was throwing kicks from crazy stances. It was almost like AS was dancing out there! In the first 3 rounds AS was toying with DM who would not really attack him. It was not even close to a stand up contest.
How would you feel if you were the best fighter in the world and you truly believed that you were. So you get ready to fight a challenger who thinks they can beat you. What type of mentaly do you need to have to get ready for that fight to stay the best in the world? Do you respect fighters that can't even challege you?
Those are some of the questions I would have for AS. I don't think he respects a fighter who can't fight or try to beat him. Once he feels that he is far better than the other fighter he is pissed that this is the best challenge out their for him. That is the only way I can imagine to explain his actions in the last 2 rounds. He works so hard to become to best fighter in the world that when he fights someone who isn't close to his level he has no respect for them and wants someone who will work as hard as him to compete with.
I don't think his antics are a good thing, but I don't want to hate one of the best fighters I have ever seen. I would rather have some other fighter challenge him so we can some more greatness either from AS or from who ever can actually beat him. I can see where some of his anxiety from going after a far inferred fighter comes from. If you watch when Ryo "Piranha" Chonan hit a flying scissor heel hook after getting beat around the ring like he stole money from AS. I would be a little hesitant to attack someone that doesn't deserve to beat me either if that means I am opening my self up to an embarrassing defeat. I think too many people don't look at the mental side of things to figure out why fighters or even people do things.
This is why I can't wait for someone to go out there and beat AS and really make him either go away or show how great of a fighter I think he really is.
