Matt Hughes finally finished an exhausted and defeated Renzo Gracie in the last round of the fight.
Both fighters tired as the fight went on and the crowd booed the legends of MMA.
This was a true legends fight between the man known as the gamest of the Gracies, Renzo Gracie and the greatest welterweight champion in UFC history, Matt Hughes. The match represented a thank you to Renzo from the UFC.
Neither fighter seemed to want to shoot for a take down in the early moments of the fight. Gracie began landing punches standing. That's when Hughes shot in for the clinch. Renzo fought off the take down and it was back to the feet for the rest of the round. Hughes landed a few leg kicks late in the round. But the action was slow.
In the second, Hughes opened with leg kicks as Renzo lunged for jabs. Hughes kneed Renzo to the body then they touched gloves. Hughes shot in for a take down and Renzo used a whizzer to fight him off. Hughes came up bleeding but went back to the leg kicks. Renzo scored with punches in medium paced action. Hughes scored with a combo that drew a smile from Gracie. Then more leg kicks that Renzo finally answered. Renzo landed a sharp combo in the final minute. Then a Gracie shot got stuffed and Hughes followed up with punches and a clinch.
A third round saw a visibly tired pair enter the cage. They traded jabs before Hughes went for more leg kicks. Gracie went for the head and body, landing some, missing most. Hughes clinched after landing some upper cuts but Gracie fought to stay on the feet. Then Hughes scored with a series of uppercuts and hooks that hurt Gracie. Then Gracie fell from a leg kick. Renzo beckoned Hughes to follow him down. Herb Dean forced the stand up. Then the same sequence happened again. Renzo somehow hung on into the final minute. He took his time getting back up to a booing crowd. Hughes finally went for the kill and finished Gracie with a mean series of punches.
