Uscola's Losses, a who's who:

Josh Burkman, Jaime Jara, Joey Villasenor, Trevor Prangley, Gegard Mousasi, Chael Sonnen, Mike Guymon, Kyle Noke

It’s not a bad idea to have a low-level gatekeeper on the show, he should be able to snuff out anybody who isn’t worthy of being the UFC. Of course, if he wins the whole season then they’ve probably got a group of lemons on their hands.

i would guess the two wildcards they’re gonna bring back are the guy who lost the war to Camozzi, and that Charley Lynch guy who got his nose re-arranged, if he can get ready in time

Victor O’Donnell and Charley Lynch – yeah I hope so too.

not so sure, considering the broken orbital, and shattered nose

Yep. No way are they coming back. Unfortunately, they are the only two that looked like they deserved a second chance.

by BJJDenver on Apr 1, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

The way I understood Dana is that these 14 guys will all fight, and then 2 of those losers will be the wildcards and will fight each other for the 8th spot in the quarters.

speaking of racist

did anyone else Notice how ridiculously canadian Nick Ring speaks? saying ’keh after every sentence. i thought they said ’eh, not ’keh

by Stillberry on Apr 1, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

canadians and Eh

actually its not after every sentence, we use it like a question mark or exclamation, and dont forget he is from out west they speak a bit different then those of us from central, eastern canada

by kieranski on Apr 1, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep, "eh" is a way to emphasize a question or sentance.

Eg.

That poutine sure looks good eh?

Sure is cold outside eh?

by truck on Apr 1, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

And it's often in the middle of a sentence, just to check if you're listening.

“It’s six kilometres away, eh, so I have to go by bike.”

Like that.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Apr 1, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I am Canadian and I don't recognize the accent...

He sounds a little like an east coaster, but he is from Alberta. I guess he is probably just a Canadian hill billy.

by truck on Apr 1, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

It is an Alberta/Saskatchewan accent. In the prairies they say “heh” or “keh” instead of “eh”, and say it much more often than in some parts of Canada. Although Hamiltonians say “eh” about three times per sentence, so it’s not necessarily regional.

I’ve been paying a ton of attention to Canadian accents since I started moving around in 2004.

"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."

by AJB on Apr 1, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Ring has a strong Saskatchewan accent.

Albertans tend to slur their consonants more than that, and don’t sharpen their vowels as much.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Apr 1, 2010 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Its not an SK thing

I’ve lived in Saskatchewan my whole life and I found his accent to be strange. I personally don’t know anyone who sounds as awkward as Nick Ring. Please don’t spread the rumor that we talk like that here.

With Nick, I’m assuming its more of a hillbilly/low education thing than a regional accent.

by colonial.red on Apr 1, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I grew up in Lloydminster.

I think that’s a Saskatchewan accent. I even once identified it on a waiter in Vancouver. He opened his mouth, and I said “You’re from Saskatchewan.”

Though, he was kind of a gay waiter, so maybe that’s a gay Saskatchewan accent.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Apr 1, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

We don’t have a distinct accent. Its the reason why there are a disproportionate amount of call centers based in Saskatchewan. I used to do phone tech support and I never once had a customer pick up on my “accent”.

The “hehs” punctuating his speech are common in western Canadian (and are probably the reason so many people said “Alberta/Saskatchewan”) but whatever it is that is going on with his pronunciation isn’t common here.

by colonial.red on Apr 1, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because YOU don't think you have an accent

Doesn’t mean you don’t. People in Georgi and Brooklyn both think they sound normal.

"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal

by duck on Apr 1, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry for double post

and people from Brooklyn and Georgia would surely recognize their accent. It wouldn’t sound strange to them like Ring does to me.

Also, if the accent was strong other people from other countries (ie: the American customers I talked to on a daily basis) would pick it up. Most were surprised when I told them I was from Canada.

by colonial.red on Apr 1, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing about accents is that they are extremely regional. I live in Southern Ontario, and have (but do not usually employ) what is known as the “Bruce County (or Cownie)” accent. But further south, down into and around, say, Simcoe, there is a deeper, more Southern accent. Some people around there sound like they’re from Virginia. (Which, I assume is because there were- at one point -quite a few displaced tobacco farmers from the States.)

Having lived in many places across Canada, I can attest that every small hamlet has a different accent. People from, Ottawa sound nothing like people for Toronto, for example. It’s all dependent on what you grew up with. I mean, I’ve talked to Mennonites that you would swear were FOB from Germany, but who born and raised just down the road.

Also, for what it’s worth, I thought Nick Ring sounded somewhat effeminate or, in the parlance of our times, “kinda gay”…. not that there’s anything wrong with that.

You know, I really like this site but half the time i feel you guys just spew random thoughts to get them in print. I disagree with your ranking system. So you have Clayton near the bottom who I felt looked very sound in his fight and Yager just above him who looked like Cro Crop with ADD? Court Mcgee at 2?? I didnt think he looked impressive at all and being from utah I thought Jordan was the far superior fighter thean Mcgee he just got caught by Tavarez

comprehension fail

1) The rankings are from FightMatrix a very respected rankings site, not BloodyElbow.
2) The rankings are based on their previous professional fights. Fighters earn points for beating other ranked fighters. It’s a very objective and fair system.
3) The fights on last night’s show have no bearing on the rankings.

Nick Ring is the most skilled guy in the house.

The only question is if he is still the same physically as the guy who won the Pride USA auditions back in 2005. The other winner of those auditions has certainly panned out nicely (KJ Noons).

I hadnt actually looked at the list of guys on there before the show started and so i was suprised to see Kyle Noke. Doesnt seem like a guy that needed to be on TUF. If i had to pick a winner, thats my guy.

Also, something about Kris McCray makes me think hes going to stick around. I cant quite put my finger on what it is though.

They need to go balls out in every fight cause all u need to do is lose 1 time and your done. They need to not think about what could happen next because their may not be a next if they lose.

Tavares

Didn’t see much of him and he’s pretty green, but I liked his composure and he seemed pretty explosive in his movements.

by Pantherhare on Apr 1, 2010 10:54 AM EDT reply actions

Thumbs down overall

I didn’t see anything approaching a well rounded, modern MMA technique lastnight.

I saw allot of guys that were gassed quickly.
I saw allot of wild moves and punches with poor defense
I saw no good striking, no timing, no footwork, no head movement
I saw no real solid wrestling technique or submission work to speak of
(only some simple entry level takedowns and judo flips).
I saw many fighters who are too small to be middleweights.

Now does this mean someone formidable can emerge from this lot?. Yes, all things are possible, but I suspect it will likely be a Sodalla type development project and most likely a fighter that drops to welterweight as he did…. yawn*
