Mike Swick Changes Tune on Dan Hardy's Challenge to Georges St Pierre at UFC 111
Ariel Helwani gets the scoop:
"Dan Hardy definitely deserves his title shot in Newark. I said in a few interviews he didn't but - I want to clear the air - when I said that I was still upset I'd got beat by him at UFC 105. I made that mistake of talking when I was feeling emotional, when I was feeling down and was disappointed in my performance. But it wasn't my true opinion; at least not one I'd actually thought about," he said.
"I'm a little embarrassed I said that, and want to say publicly Hardy deserves his shot and has a good chance of winning. He's a top fighter. I said on my Twitter I hope Dan does well and good luck to him, that he deserves shot. But obviously no-one picked up on that while the other stuff I said before was everywhere.
"Has Hardy had a fast route to the title? Yes, but he's taken chances and accepted tough fights when offered to him. It's true: if I had won that fight no-one would be saying I didn't earn it. And do I wish I'd have gotten a faster route to a number one contender fight? Of course. You wouldn't be hearing me complain, or any other welterweight complain, about getting a quicker route to a number one contender fight. He stepped up to fight me and won.
This is, of course, a dramatic change in tune from Mike Swick, who not long ago was smack talking Dan Hardy at every opportunity.
I will give Swick this, I'd certainly rather see Dan Hardy vs Georges St Pierre than Mike Swick vs Georges St Pierre.
I hope Dana White appreciates this bit of team spirit from Swick as they enter the final push to sell UFC 111.
The return of popular welterweight champion Georges St Pierre is very important to the UFC for business reasons. They don't need their own independent contractors shit-talking their matchmaking.

Good for Swick. It’s not easy to admit when you’re wrong, especially when your opinion is made public. I like him a lot more for this. Now go back to middleweight, d00d..

He’s in a tough spot right now. His stock is about as low as its ever gotten. His future is unclear at welterweight, and he’s always looked better at middleweight. The only problem is middleweight looks absolutely stacked right now. Comments like this will help win him back fans though, and that’s always a good thing. I know I laughed when he made fun of Kos’s hair on twitter.
The man known simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"
middleweight stacked?
with who? chael sonnens talking his way to a shot, marquadt just got beat, meia snuck his way into a title shot, and belfort has never fought in the ufc at that weight
also anderson is either destroying or playing with everybody, if swick goes up and wins about 2 or 3 good fights he’ll get a shot
Middleweight is stacked with fighters waiting on Silva to jump to LHW.

Who's he going to get those wins against?
Sonnen did not talk his way into a title shot, he won his way there. Beating the number two in the division in a row usually earns you a title shot. How many of these fighters do you think Swick would be favored over: Belfort, Sonnen, Maia, Bisping, Wanderlei, Akiyama, Belcher, Marquardt, Okami (who’s already beaten Swick), or even Cote?
The man known simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"
None… maybe Cote. Which is a fight I would love to see.

I have made a conscious effort to not take a fighter’s speech right after a fight seriously. Your adrenaline is pumping, you’re pumped up, you’re ecstatic at just having won or deeply horrified at having lost. Sure, some guys are able to give a pre-rehearsed, PC answer no matter what happens, but you can’t give a guy too much shit for saying something ridiculous or out of line having just been in hand to hand combat, He’s not in a regular state of mind.
"If I wanted to spend a half hour between two hairy legs I'd go to your mother's house." -Don Frye
I agree, and I’d add that I never take what a fighter says before a fight too seriously, either. Essentially, fighters are full of shit:) They have to be clear minded enough to see their faults and their opponent’s strengths, but past that point, honesty gets you nowhere in a sport where ego and self belief are such an enormous part of a guy’s success

To be fair
his comments where well after the fight had actually happened.
"That's right I'm into hardcore crack, that's why my teeth are so bad"
I've seen something similar to this before...
Remember when Mir said something bad about Lesnar, and Zuffa made Mir recant what he said about Lesnar. Then the internet starting blowing up about how Dana White made Mir recant his statement regarding ‘killing’ Brock Lesnar. After everyone knew that it was a phony recant, Zuffa told Mir he could recant the recant — and Mir started talking more shit again. Remember?
Well now Zuffa has made Swick recant. But, no one knows that Dana White has made Swick recant. So, Swick’s recant seems legitimate, even though Mike Swick, like Frank Mir, is desperately hoping that Dana White will call him up and allow him to recant the recant. Will Swick recant the recant? Will he admit that he truly doesn’t thing that Hardy deserves the shot? We’ll never know! — unless we all pull our heads out of our asses and realize that this is all bull shit — THIS IS A PHONY RECANT!

This main event is hurting! Everyone knows what’s gonna happen. This card is getting buys because of Mir/Carwin — Only!

I'm sorry
But you come off as remarkably ill informed. GSP is wildly popular. He could fight a bag of leaves and bring in buys.

That’s true — GSP could fight a bag of leaves and get buys. But if GSP fights someone who could beat him — it would get MORE buys. Zuffa likes MORE BUYS over just buys.
Faber, Florian, Nick Diaz, 'Mayhem', Mousasi, Fedor
Swick saying this isn’t going to convince anybody that Hardy is Anderson Silva.

Mir saying that he wants to kill Lesnar doesn’t really effect anything either — but Zuffa thought they needed to step in, if only to protect their biggest commodity (Lesnar). Followed by GSP, BJ Penn, i don’t know who’s next — maybe silva.
Faber, Florian, Nick Diaz, 'Mayhem', Mousasi, Fedor
So Georges is the second biggest commodity in the company but no one is buying 111 because of him?
I don’t follow your logic.

They’re forcing Swick to recant because he’s detracting from the second biggest commodity. Like they did to Mir regarding their first biggest commodity.
Cmon, I though I was being funny with my use of RECANT but now I have to explain all this trivial shit. Who the fuck are you people? lol

Zuffa will not be able to produce the same record breaking ppv buy rates for 2010 that it did in 2009… just gotta accept it and move on. (this is why a resistance line is so important… it tells many stories)
It will still crush boxing and wwe combined and revenue growth will be healthy with all the new deals coming in but gotta look to 2011 to set a new buy record.
End of the year there’s gonna be a bidding war for the UFC franchise in the US and it’s new distribution strategy will include 3 network shows a year so the foundation for a new “peak” in the states will be set.
Ill repeat some of the keys to look for this year:
The ratings for UFC on versus. If it beats Faber everything is going according to plan and let the bidding wars begin.
The WEC ppv numbers. WEC’s current incarnations last hope. If it survives (unlikely) we could see the 155lb division consolidate into the wec – if it doesnt (highly likely) the best 145lbers and 135lbers in the world will be in the UFC. What happens to wec as a brand nobody knows.
Important to understand that total ppv buys are not nearly as important as new household buys… for example: 150k buys could be alot better than 250k buys if 90% of the 150 are made up of “new buyers” (households which have never ordered a UFC before)… GREAT, but it wont mean much if 250k buys come in and 90% are active UFC buyers. WEC needs a reason to exist.
Shitfarce’s ppv. CBS is all but out the door. If they can sign Fedor they have one hail marry pass left with a ppv.and then they will fizzle away. If they dont sign Fedor they will just fizzle away.
M1 has come out and stated that it’s “almost” a done deal… meaning they want Zuffa to better the offer. Not likely. If Zuffa signs Fedor it will be with buying his contract like slave trading used to work. Fedor can retire in the UFC with boat loads of money and M1 can go do what they want with their cash eating someone else’s ear up – but let’s see if they’re smart enough to take an awesome deal this time around.
Unfortunately for Coker, M1 is gonna swallow him whole if he gives in – these guys renegotiate every breakfast morning and your left nut will be gone before you can say “2 egss and cheese”.
Coker has come out and threatened to put Fedor or Henderson on CBS for free against a UFC ppv… yeah that’s about as hollow a threat as Tom Attencio’s plan of going up against UFC 100 right before they went out of business. Pride went “kamikaze”… let’s see if shitfarce has the balls to go out on their shields before they become a distant memory. I can now chart the exact phases these guys go through and where they are in their lifespan at this point.
Anyhoo… yeah, I veered off topic talking about swicks comments hurting ppv’s… and yeah Im an asshole… and no, running over your cat and saying “shitfarce” are not the same things so go cry somewhere else.
Do you know how to rec?
Doesn’t look like it.
Also, you should pay more attention to a well articulated statement than a somewhat witty response.

LW consolidated into the WEC? I guess you’re assuming Penn moves to WW, because there’s no way in hell Penn gets stuck in the second rate Zuffa organization.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

He would do it if the money is right. He would be the only reason I bought their ppvs

Never considered it, but it makes a lot of sense.
LW would fit better in the WEC and give them more to work with for PPVs.

Couple questions
1) How can M-1 be negotiating with Zuffa if Fedor has a contract with SF?
2) What do you mean “If the Versus ratings beat Faber”? You mean the 1.1 mil number he pulled?
3) Why would the UFC eliminate 155 unless they have something to replace it with? I mean they’re having enough trouble coming up with main events now, at least they were for the last 3-4 months.
1) Fedor doesn’t have a contract with SF.
2) I mean beat the rating. 1.1m is a representation of the rating in households based on the amount of households Versus was available in at that time. But yeah you get the picture.
3) In the unlikelihood of this happening there will be alot more invested in the WEC (reality shows, 125lb division added, etc..) and it will have more Big Events. This scenario is very unlikely… Like I said, the WEC would have to bring in a shit load of NEW buyers to the table for this to happen.

the stuff swick was saying before only made him look bad anyway, maybe he just calmed down and realized that not only was he acting really petty(like marcus davis) but that he only devalues himself saying hardy didnt deserve a shot
even if he doesnt believe any of this stuff its probably in his best interest to say it
To my mind
It felt like that losing a decision to Hardy meant that he still felt he was a few fights from title contention.
I don’t think it was the UFC brass so much as it was being choked unconscious that’s caused him to re-evaluate things.
Get rid of the ramp!
by ihateemo on Mar 10, 2010 3:25 AM EST via mobile reply actions
To be clear:
Dana would rather have Frank Mir up and down the airwaves talking about killing motherfuckers in the ring than Swick saying that one of the guys in the headlining match of UFC 111 doesn’t deserve to be there.
So if this seems like it came out of the blue…
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.
I blog at TangleBones - you should follow me on Twitter here.
If you like it, you should put a rec on it.
I think it would have shown up a lot sooner if it had been forced from dana white
and besides Swick wasn’t the only one that talked shit about hardy’s title shot, i think he had the change of heart because of what Hardy said about swick and kos.

Kid Nate....
I was wondering if this is correct:
I will give Swick this, I’d certainly rather see Dan Hardy vs Georges St Pierre than Mike Swick vs Georges St Pierre.
Did you mean to say you will give Swick that, or the other way around (that you’d rather see Swick vs. GSP)? Or are you saying that you agree with Swick partially in that you’d rather see Hardy than him?
I'd want Hardy to do well against GSP, too.
That way it wouldn’t look like Swick just got dominated by some scrub. Good for him though. Talking down someone that just kicked his ass was making him look like a bitch.
