"Hatton, 31, reportedly told friends and family this weekend that he would be hanging up the gloves, 10 months after a brutal second round knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas."

Comeback fight at heavyweight in 2011.

Why?

He’s a the #2 Light Welterweight in the World, he’s only lost to the #1 Welterweight Manny Pacquiao and #2 WW Floyd Mayweather Jr. Not like he’s losing in his division, would loved to have seen Hatton vs. #1 LWW Timothy Bradley.

Best of luck with whatever Ricky does, as long as he stays away from MMA!!

by CSKit on Mar 8, 2010 10:30 PM EST reply actions

For some guys, if they can’t be the best, being second just isn’t good enough.

by Worldisart on Mar 8, 2010 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

But

Hatton could be the best, in his weight class. Both Mayweather and Pacman are a weightclass above him, no one in his weightclass has beaten him.

That’d be like Jon Fitch retiring because he can’t beat Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson…

by CSKit on Mar 8, 2010 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Regardless, I think those two losses hang heavy on him. Those two fights are the difference between him being looked at as a very very good fighter and an all time great, and I think he’s cognizant of that.

Hatton has made his mark and I actually like the idea of athletes walking away before their inevitable decline. It saves from explaining to people why the guy who’s lost 7 of their last 8 fights is a great fighter. (re: Jens Pulver)

by Worldisart on Mar 8, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

Good Point

I hope Richard Schaefer (Golden Boy CEO) is succesful in signing #2 LWW Ricky Hatton (45-2-0) vs. #1 LW Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1)

by CSKit on Mar 8, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I’m not a huge boxing fan but I have soft spot for Hatton and I’d like to see him have one last moment of glory before he rides off into the sunset.

by Worldisart on Mar 8, 2010 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

He’s 31, a multi-millionaire, has a fledgling TV career going over here, and just likes food way too much!

I think the weight cutting comes into it, it’s been discussed a lot recently in MMA, but Hatton for years has been getting really quiet fat between fights, I’d hate to imagine the numbes he has to cut, it has to take a toll on the body.

by Barry619 on Mar 9, 2010 6:41 AM EST up reply actions

Or like BJ Penn retiring after losing to GSP.

by Polyhedron on Mar 8, 2010 10:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Why? I'm more open to him fighting MMA, than Toney, or Mayorga.

The guy is only 31 years old, and is a real SUPERSTAR (not like those faded guys), and is far more accomplished than Mayorga. If he wanted to compete in MMA and really dedicates himself, he would probably do better than the two I mentioned, and he would be a great pick up for any MMA promotion.

And need I remind you guys that the WEC, which houses the best FW and BW fighters in the world really needs and deserves more viewers?

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 8, 2010 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

I don`t think that there es enough cash in all of the WEC`s assets to afford a Hatton fight.

by Ubernoober on Mar 8, 2010 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see him doing MMA. I think he’s done done, not Michael Jordan done.

by Worldisart on Mar 8, 2010 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I know.

I don’t think that either.. I just answered a point CSKit made… IF he decides to train and compete in MMA, (big IF), I don’t see why he shouldn’t be given the chance.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 8, 2010 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

That has to be the biggest joke I ever read..

—Hatton can’t even maintain his weight, let alone train for MMA. Have you ever watched a Hatton fight? HIs style is complete mishapen and tailor made for Boxers like Bradley, Peterson, Holt, Alexander, Campbell, Khan — need I go on?

He would be demolished in MMA. Right out the gate. ding ding …Hatton loses by KO in Round 1.

I just named the next generation of JLW champions/challengers for Pacquiao’s, soon to be vacated, championship at 140. Even if Richard managed to make a fight with Marquez — Marquez would take him out in seven. Hatton just doesn’t have the mindset for Boxing anymore, Mayweather ruined him with that KO loss, Pacquiao just took the perfect opportunity to beat down on a beaten man.

Hatton is D-O-N-E.

blahblahblah..

joke.blahblahblah.. MMA blahblah. blahblah

Toney is done. Mayorga is done. Ray Mercer is done. This boxer is done. blahblahblahblah.. What does all that have to do with saying that this person can’t try his hand in MMA if (in the 1 in a million chance that) he wanted to?

oh, wait… NOTHING.

if he doesn’t do well and gets KOed in the first… so freaking what? that wasn’t even the point I was making, and I guess you can’t understand that since the mere idea of hatton fighting again, gets you all riled up enough to predict how much he will hypothetically suck against a myriad of guys in both sports.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 9, 2010 2:27 AM EST up reply actions

IMO

If he goes straight to MMA w/o years of training and gets tooled, it will tarnish his image. Same goes for any top Boxer. These side-show bob guys I don’t care about, they could do competition double dutch…

by CSKit on Mar 8, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

He’s got a background in kickboxing… 18 months grappling he should do well in MMA.

by mmalogic on Mar 8, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

The real concern is "Ricky Fatton"

The dude balloons up in weight in between every fight and it seemed like every cut was getting harder and harder on the guy.

He can't make 140 anymore

He used to ballon up to about 180 between fights and cut from there. I don’t think he can cut that much and take the strain anymore. He probably isn’t that good at higher weights. Retirement is the best option.

by cyke on Mar 9, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

well that sucks, I was hoping he had one more fight in him, I was hearing something about a fight between him and jmm. would be good for him to go out on a w instead of a loss, but I guess plans like that can also backfire in the event that he loses that fight too

by kanodogg on Mar 8, 2010 10:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He wants to release Fatton.

He’s been pinned up too long. Must. Eat. Shepard’s. Pie. you know that’s all he hears in his head.

Oh yeah......

I forgot “retiring” in boxing means “I will require more money for my next fight sirs.”

by JimJoe on Mar 8, 2010 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

He’s been out for 10 months with trainers really urging him to retire. I can believe this one.

Good on him, he’s rich & accomplished, retire and save yourself the inevitable brain damage.

Open yourself a bar in your hometown, get fat & live out your years telling people stories.

I envy his decision and also his ability to be retired at the age of 31.

by DirtyML on Mar 8, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Good thing he's doing MMA so he's not on BLH

and on BE……….So can I expect updates on ADCC and the like?

by ChillMike on Mar 9, 2010 1:46 AM EST reply actions

Yeah

Actually you can. ADCC news pops up here all the time.

As well as

Amateur wrestling , Mui Thai and the like?

I realize it’s a public blog and the like but it’s becoming more and more apparent that this board is boxing heavy.

by ChillMike on Mar 9, 2010 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

Well...

ADCC probably pops up so often since so many active MMA stars participate. As for the cross-pollination, it goes both ways and I like it. Boxing and K-1 show up on BE every once in a while, and Bad Left Hook and Head Kick Legend sprinkle in some MMA

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

As much as we like to say otherwise

Once you add in community posting it becomes a board. But a board with an editorial slant! Huzzah!

by asa on Mar 9, 2010 5:13 AM EST up reply actions

To follow on from this convo thread;

MMA wasnt created in a bubble. Nor should a blog covering MMA be tunnel visioned in what it decides is MMA related.

I’m all for the wrestling, BJJ, Thai, K1 and Boxing news that shows up on this site.

Ha ha!

The site someone created here certainly belongs to them. where did that come from?

All blogs are just a reformatting of message board architecture, man. Its a technicality of your chosen platform. This might be able to choose which user groups you allow to post and which page or category those posts appear in such as the common Blog formatted front page which shows snippets or it’s configured already for … Wait a minute.

Are you just trying to avoid being compared to Sherdog or the UG? The chaos involved? Is that why the F-word?

I don't know about you,

but even if Humans did originate from monkeys, I’d still be able to distinguish one from the other.

Apes

I meant this as a good thing and the reason your community is so strong, but the cursing from Luke and your (possibly joking) condescension suggest you guys are irked for being compared to a “message board.” Boards are not a bad thing and especially not this one. Perhaps forum is a term with less baggage? I was suggesting you take it back since this site is more than a blog, and that’s a positive thing not an insult.

If you were joking, then think of it as telling the difference between a Homo Sapien in a suit and a Homo Sapien in shorts and flip-flops. And hey, there’s Homo Erectus in the back trying to patch phpBB!

Why insult a compliment?

I wasn’t agreeing with the " too much boxing" complainer. I was cheering that BE changed the very concept of what an MMA community could be from random childishness to an editorial vibe no other site has.

Thanks for proving me wrong.

I guess you have been reading BE since the Toney fiasco? The only other time recently where boxing was the topic for a week or two was when Pacquio and Mayweather were in negotiations.

I'd like to see him try MMA.

Paq destroyed him

Another example of a guy that got KO’d and will never be the same. Only he recognized it before he got back in the ring.

If he really stays retired, I apploud his decision.
