Kimbo Slice Will Not Headline the Hypothetical April 17th UFC Show

Kimbo_medium

Via Dave Meltzer:

UFC just sent a release confirming Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione for 5/8 in Montreal.  The match had been on the schedule for that night for some time.  There had been serious talk of making a change in plans and having Slice, the most proven television drawing card in the sport, headline on 4/17 head-to-head with the Strikeforce show on CBS.

Without Kimbo, it's not clear who the UFC has for a main event in April.  The show originally was rumored to feature Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama, but those rumors quickly disappeared.  Along with the injury to Mike Swick, one has to wonder if the UFC is considering scrapping this proposed show altogether.

It's also worth noting that in the increasingly strategic chess game between Strikeforce and the UFC, this could easily be a bluff intended to trick Strikeforce into committing to April 17th.  Nobody should confuse a press release with anything final.

[UPDATE] by Scott Haber:  The Kimbo-Mitrione fight is now (finally) on the official event page for UFC 113, and Thomas Gerbasi has a separate write-up announcing the fight on UFC.com

Hypothetically

Maybe the logistics were just too great to put together a good enough card with only five weeks to go?
Another possibility is that the UFC become aware that Strikeforce’s May 15th card was (hypothetically) going to be on CBS and they decided it wasn’t worth countering this event if it only helped hype up the next one? Or they feel it will be more important to keep their ammo dry to counter a future hypothetical event headlined by Fedor.

by John Nash on Mar 8, 2010 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Dana is just plaining mind games with Strikeforce.

I never thought the UFC would actually have a live counter.

Along with the injury to Matt Serra…

wasn’t it swick who was injured? maybe i’m remembering wrong.

Are you writing for the UG now or are you still at Heavy.com?

by John Nash on Mar 8, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

The UG just has a cookie cutter news scraping service, last time I checked. I have never seen a scrap of original writing posted there.

toney vs duffee

put the boxer in with todd duffee or some other mid level heavyweight

by hatteras on Mar 8, 2010 9:18 PM EST reply actions

very bad idea imo, why would you destroy such a potentially bright prospect by throwing him up against a pro boxer with many years of experience? sure duffee has heavy hands and can KO someone like tim hague with ease, but i don’t see him doing that with an elusive boxer like toney.

by kanodogg on Mar 8, 2010 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

Toney’s not “elusive”; he’s lost a step and tends to just play a defensive shell game against the ropes. Duffee would take him down in short order.

by AJB on Mar 9, 2010 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

You really think Duffee..a GREEN ass fighter would be a god opponent for a legendary boxer? Dude come on. I know its fun to bash boxers around here but the idea that a green prospect can demolish a legendary boxer is hilarious to me. Give Toney some respect man. For gods sake..

by LtotheK on Mar 9, 2010 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

I love all these Toney vs ______ arguements! It’s like UFC 1 never happened.

Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

You need to watch more MMA.

If Duffee and Toney do fight, I will be happy to take your money.

i dont think the ufc will counter

i cant think of anyone who is available to fight . Maybe they did want to try to make an event happen and just realized noone is available to make a stacked card to counter strikeforce with.

by #1 piggy on Mar 8, 2010 9:47 PM EST reply actions

This shuold fall nicely into SF's lap

Even if UFC doesn’t do a live counter they will surely counter with something that is fan friendly. That’s why SF should act proactively and go up against the least possible competition which, of course, is a WEC PPV and some Showtime boxing. Countering a weak PPV bodes very well for Strikeforce as they will be the clear choice for the casual fan. If they decide to “stay nice” and not go against the WEC then they can expect to lose every casual MMA viewer to a slick ZUFFA counter broadcast on Spike.

hmmm, Belfort’s Dr has cleared him to fight?

by naturalist on Mar 8, 2010 10:01 PM EST reply actions

Belfort pulls out of a fight with Silva on the 10th but is magically going to be able to fight on the 17th? I think not.

Vitor Belfort says he’ll be back ‘very soon’ — but will it be as number one contender?

by naturalist on Mar 8, 2010 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just saying even if he is ready to go, for the sake of optics, I think Zuffa holds him out a bit longer.

by Worldisart on Mar 8, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Toney and Kimbo won’t fight april 17th.
That means “green light” for SF on april 17

That would end Strikeforce for good.

I don’t know where to put this, but Spike is re-airing UFC 108 on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. They just announced it during UFC Unleashed.
