Brandon-vera

Brandon Vera says he'll submit Jon Jones if he gets taken down:

"You take me to the ground this year, you're going to get submitted," Vera told MMAWeekly.com in a recent interview. "I'll tell you that much right now."

"We're going to bang man. I don't think he'll take me to the ground," Vera commented about Jones. "He's with a new camp, he's with (Greg) Jackson's and them. They're good game plan people so he might try to take me to the ground, but I tell you this much in 2010, my jiu-jitsu game I've been tightening back up."

Yeah. Unfortunately every fighter can not be like Chael Sonnen, where you talk some serious crap and then back it up with a really great performance.

He did talk it up a little bit before Okami and had some verbal jabs for the MW champion.

He also talked before Maia

Sonnen just talks regardless of results. He beat Nate, and he’s a dangerous matchup for anybody not named Anderson at MW, but lets not get crazy over here.

Yeah let’s not get too carried away, sonen is great but he said he could beat A.Silva since the day he signed with the UFC. He got A LOT to back up.

What are the odds for another shoulder injury?

by dancingChicken on Mar 8, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Probably not good.

However, ask Bonnar how those throws felt. They are alot better at both causing damage as well as disorienting an opponent than the traditional double/single leg take downs that so many guys use.

Even Vera doesnt believe the hype behind Vera anymore. I hope they keep the medic real close by for this fight

I think expectations were high

and only Brandon is to blame for not living up to his potential. I hope he takes Bones out tho, as it would hurt him more to lose than it would hurt Brandon.

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.

The Bones hype train gets derailed a bit after this one!

by LtotheK on Mar 8, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

Ummmm Riiiiight

Yeah that’s not gonna happen. I love Randy to death but he pulls the trigger like molasses these days and Vera couldn’t do enough to decisively win that fight. What in the world makes you think he could even phase Jones?? Plus he lost after his new found respect for training and discipline so what could he improve to show up differently this time I ask you?

by Jonnycaz2.0 on Mar 8, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions

ummmmmmmmmm

no shame is losing to Randy and certainly no shame in not being able to finish him. Plus, Most feel that Vera won that fight.

So, what exactly is your point?

by LtotheK on Mar 8, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

ummmmmmm

Look I’m a die hard Randy fan, but you have to be living in lala land to think that Randy doesn’t move and fight like a 47 year old man. His punches are slower and he gets rocked way easier and he wins fights because hes smart experienced and in shape.

Get ready for the point friend

Vera’s not a noob, he’s younger than Randy, and apparently has talent and thus should have done exceptionally better against Randy than he did. But he didn’t and he wont against Jones

by Jonnycaz2.0 on Mar 8, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

I have to agree here. If the Vera that showed up against Werdum and Randy and Jardine fights the Bones that showed up against Bonnar and the other two guys, I don’t like Vera’s chances. Somewhere Vera has the ability to make this fight happen, but there’s something wrong in his head that’s making him not win fights.

by Dooda on Mar 8, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Why do people talk about Werdum as if Vera was suppose to, or even should have beaten him. Werdum was and is a beast. If the Vera that fought couture shows up, Jones well have his work cut out for him. Vera looked great in the clinch, where Jones likes to do his work. Good Luck

by mma_dude on Mar 8, 2010 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

It’s sort of hard to compare because we really don’t have much of a cross-section of them fighting similar fighters. Bones, to me, looks way nastier in the clinch to me then Vera. Vera’s good, but I like Bones here.

And I don’t really think that Vera looked “great” in the clinch. He didn’t get destroyed in it, but he certainly let himself get controlled for the entire fight while not having any counter at all for Couture’s clinching.

Don’t get me wrong Vera has potential, if he lives up to it this fight is insane, if not I like Bones’ chance.

nyet, comrade

Bones will smash Vera headfirst right through the octagon floor.

I love Bones man, but he’s facing a tough one here..

by LtotheK on Mar 8, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Honestly I wanna thank all you guys for adding to the hype behind Bones Jones and swaying the handicappers to make Vera +240 seriously!
Vera is so undervalued on the current line it is disgusting. I dont understand how you guys think Bones runs through him.
If you look at their skillsets: Wrestling: Both guys are high level Greco Roman competitors with Jones being a JUCO national champ and Vera having got a full scholarship and wrestled Division 1 (much tougher competition) Vera also trained at the olympic training center with Randy, Matt, and Dan. Maybe you can give Jones a slight edge because he wrestled much more recently. Sub Grappling: Jones is primarily a wrestler with some subs and sub defense. He now trains with Greg Jackson doing “Gaidojitsu”. Brandon Vera is I believe a Brown Belt under Lloyd Irvin (only guy in the world with blackbelts in sambo, judo, and bjj) Veras been training BJJ much longer with much more experience. You gotta give Vera a sizeable advantage there. Striking: Vera at one time was considered the most dynamic HW striker in MMA while he was training under the arguably g.o.a.t kickboxer Rob Kaman. Vera has since left Kamans gym which I believe is the cause of his recent lack of aggression. Bones has an unorthadox-unpredictable striking game which he self admits he learned from the internet and movies. Although Jones is a quick learner and very explosive here and elsewhere you still gotta give the edge here to Vera.
So this is the breakdown Striking: edge:Vera, Sub Grappling: edge: Vera, Wrestling: slight edge: Jones! So how in the hell is Bones gonna run him over? I dont think its gonna happen thats why I got $300 on Vera to win $720!! Vera by Unanimous Decision!

Can you tell me more about the level of competition Vera faced as an NCAA wrestler at Old Dominion? ODU is not even a blip on the radar in NCAA wrestling, and Vera washed out there. The only mentions anyone has ever found on Vera’s greco training was that he once finished 3rd in a 4 man tourney at the OTC. What are all his amazing credentials again? Jon Jones was a JUCO champ, and passed on scholarships to wrestle for Iowa or Iowa St to begin his MMA career. Jones is the better wrestler, with more recent experience, and has demonstrated vastly superior wrestling for MMA.

Vera has good striking, but he was never the most dynamic anything at HW, nor is he the most dynamic at LHW. The only guy he’s put away in his last 4 fights is Mike Patt. Vera also has nice BJJ credentials, but I’d be hesitant to mock Jones’ grappling, or the camp he trains with. FWIW, Jones also works his MT with Phil Nurse, and his MMA at Tristar with Zahabi.

by Hardcharger on Mar 8, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

really?

Really Vera washed out at Old Dominion really? He was actually injured thats why he stopped wrestling at the time and then he went to the airforce where he resumed his wrestling! Thats when and why he was training at the olympic training center! Yea Jones has the more recent experience i’ll give you that, but dont shit on getting a full scholarship to a divison 1 school whether its Old Dominion or not!
And nobodies mocking Jone’s anything but he def is’nt on Vera’s level when it comes to sub grappling whatsoever!

by MMAruinedME on Mar 8, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, he washed out. Again, can you detail Vera’s exploits in wrestling during his short stint at the OTC?

You wanted to compare the wrestling credentials, pedigree, and abilities of each guy. Jones is superior in that category.

What evidence do you have of Vera’s sub grappling being far above the level of Jon Jones? Which fights of Vera’s show this ability. And yes, you gave a lame attempt at mocking Jones grappling skills. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out so well for you.

by Hardcharger on Mar 8, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Vera sleeps through most of his “big” fights, throwing little (if any) offense.Jones doesn’t.Also,Vera looked like a fish out of water on his back against Werdum and Jardine. If those two guys can put him on his back and ground and pound him, just think about what Jones is going to be able to do to him?

He looked like a fish out of water against Werdum as 99% of the world would prob look. I don’t recall him looking like a fish out of water against Jardine at all, and lets not forget what Vera was able to do against Mir..

I think Vera still has something left. This is a huge, I mean HUGE fight for Vera. It’s probably going to determine the rest of his career. If he comes up short it’s getting to the point where Dana can only do so much with him. If he wins in a big way he can catapult to the top of the mix and get some big names for a shot towards the 205 title..

by LtotheK on Mar 8, 2010 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, Lets Not Forget

What Vera did to a motorcycle accident victim when he was still reeling from the effects of his injuries

by Jonnycaz2.0 on Mar 8, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

If Mir himself says you can’t discredit his win over Nog and fighters always fight injured you cant take away the beating Vera gave him it works both ways.

by MMAruinedME on Mar 8, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

So

Fighting related injuries kind of differ from traffic accident injuries

All I know is Mir was not himself and Vera capitalized, that point is known. But most of us know that fight wasnt an accurate evaluation in testing Vera’s abilities against the big boys.

leave Nog vs Mir out of it

by Jonnycaz2.0 on Mar 8, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

I give Vera credit for beating Mir, but I only give it so much creedence when relating it to a fight with someone like Bones (who seems to take about as much damage as Anderson Silva lately). A healthy Bones is not even in the same ballpark as Mir who was coming off a traffic accident. A traffic accident is a completely different animal from the sore shoulders and backs that a lot of guys complain about.

by Dooda on Mar 8, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Eventually there comes a time when I stop believing in the guys that let you down so many times and I think that Vera has finally hit that point for me. He just doesn’t seem to have “it” anymore and every fight confirms that to me.

Bones, on the other hand, seems to have “it” in spades. I feel like we’re potentially watching the GSP of the LHW division. Until he shows a physical or psychological weakness, I’d be pooping bricks if I was about to fight him. I don’t like Vera’s chances, but I’im really looking forward to this fight, because if Vera straightens his crap out, he’s gonna be a bad mamma jamma.

That's uh.... that's not gonna happen, Vera.

by Anthony Pace on Mar 8, 2010 6:07 PM EST reply actions

I'm so excited for this fight...

I completely understand the Jones hype — he’s looked so damn good in the fights we’ve seen him in — plus, his style is so unusual and interesting. But lets not get carried away, he hasn’t really beaten anyone yet. Stephan Bonnar just plain sucks, and his win against Hammill was tainted, wait, it wasn’t even a win — it was a loss. Yeah, he looked good from the mount on a guy who had a dislocated shoulder, but why is there talk of him running over Vera?

I do not understand the Vera hate. His technical style is crisp and clean, and he never really seems to take too much damage. Forget about everything he did as a heavy weight — it was silly for him to ever be fighting at HW. In fact, he looks like he could probably fight at middle weight. Most importantly is his LHW record, where he’s BEATEN some pretty tough guys (keith jardine, randy couture).

I say this will be a damn good fight.

by mma_dude on Mar 8, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

I think if Vera tried MW he’d look sick, be weakened, and uneffective. Thats if he could make the cut, he’s pretty lean at 205.

maybe...

Vera is 6’3"
Silva is 6’2"
But Silva, to me, looks much thicker. I think Vera just likes ice cream more than Silva does.

by mma_dude on Mar 8, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Anderson is a freak

I firmly believe that Kendall Grove, for example, should bulk up and fight at LHW. I’m with the others that have recently been stating that going to a lower class is not always a good idea for fighters who drop a couple fights. Look at Diego and Swick, their speed and finishing ability left with the pounds they lost to drop a class.

Are you taking liberties with the word BEATEN? Am I not getting something here? You somehow rationalize that his beatdown of Hammill wasn’t due to his skill, and then you claim he beat Jardine and Couture? I know for a fact that he LOST to Couture, and I thought that he was beaten by Jardine too? But you might have some kind of crazy cosmic ironic style that I simply don’t get.

by Dooda on Mar 8, 2010 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

i am taking liberties...

Are you aware that Jones lost to Hammill? If so, then you should understand my meaning.
