Thank you thank you thank you!
You’re the man brother. Seriously this is really nice of you to do. You made my week.

Orcus !!!!!
You fuckin delivered on that!!!!!!
Machida is on another level with his classiness. I scored the shogun fight the same way the champ did too. 4 rds to 1 for the champ. I predict his next defence he wins by tko via Crane Kick
Fightmetric doesn’t tell you who won a fight. It tells you which fighter was more effective statistically.
The look on Machida’s face after the bell rings and when they announced he won, told me who the true winner was. WAR SHOGUN!!

Also, the fact they made an instant rematch has to say something.
"For your information, I would like to ask a question."

So the determining factor for you is the look on a guy’s face, and for Toolshed, it’s Fightmetric. I prefer to watch the actual fight. In that case, I agree with the majority of the judges. First 3 rounds to Machida.
Yes. As a matter of fact I do. Everyone felt like Shogun won. It’s a fight. Lyoto damn right didn’t feel like he won that after the bell. Body language goes a long way. I’m not saying “Oh B.S.! Idk how the F*ck the judges gave Machida the win!!” I can see how they could. Shogun squeezed out the win IMHO. Machida looked ready to fill his diary with tears.

"Everyone felt like Shogun won."
Everyone has a short memory. Shogun won the last ten minutes, and that’s all they remember.
Pushing to finish the fight. FINISH the FIGHT. If that was a real street fight with no limit in time Machida would be broken. I know, I know “There’s rules and such” but pushing to actually finish the fight and not slap box or gain points but to actually end the fight earns more points in my book. Shogun won, as he looked to actually be finishing the fight and WANTING to. Thanks

This isnt PRIDE. You might disagree with the decision, but maybe break it down in context to the actual rules. Shogun might have tried to end the fight, but you arent awarded points for doing so. The fight was very close and to cry out that one fighter was robbed is wrong.
As far as the street fighting comment goes, those two were competeing against each other in a sport, with rules. There is no need to compare it to a street fight.

If Shogun had TRIED TO FINISH THE FIGHT, maybe he could have. But he was content to sit back thinking he’d outpointed Lyoto. Capitol letters aren’t so impressive. Shogun looked damn good though, no argument there. Should be a great rematch.

Ironic, as Lyoto had thought that he was the one who was fighting to finish while he’d thought Shogun had been trying to win on points… an inversion of Lyoto’s own past in the UFC?
The way I saw it was, Lyoto: 1, 2, Evade, evade and evade and so on. Damn, good fight. Not gonna lie because I sure jumped on Lyoto’s nuts. Shogun did win me over. I truly felt(At The time) that he was robbed, but after giving it some thought, could see how they gave it to Lyoto. Rematch couldn’t come soon enough.

Orcus my brother! Thanks so much for translating all this. Damn, it must have been a lot of work. After the delicious and glorious victory for Wanderlei, we’ll have to go to our separate corners for Machida/Shogun II, but I know we both want an epic war out of it. I hope we get it! Thanks again!

I also wonder about this show…This is probably the best, most thorough recap, highlights, and analysis of a fight on any television program I’ve ever seen. Does this interviewer cover MMA generally, or is it kind of a celebrity interview format. Just curious…

"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"
hey orcus
did you study overseas?
you speak (write) fantastic english
from what i see the average brazilians dont speak much english
i think i’m not the only one interested to know :)
Cigano, it is your time to avenge your master's loss!
Making the world a better place, one dirtbag at a time.
born and raised in Brazil :p
I studied in private classes, great classes, but I assure you that I have a big accent :p If you’re talking about average Brazilian as mostly fighters, than yeah, their English is not that great, but most people who studies in private classes fare quite well.
And I do travel overseas every now and then, but I learned English while young.
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
so is english the second language of choice in brazil then?
Cigano, it is your time to avenge your master's loss!

no
but it helps searching for jobs, just like Spanish and very soon Chinese will too (I taught my daughter English and I’m thinking about placing her in Chinese classes, very important!). I work a lot with companies outside of Brazil and having English is a must. My father just wanted me to have a good future so he made sure I learned it.

What school you studied at?
I’m struggling at CCAA ahahah I’ll try to watch the interview at home. Didn’t work out in the office.

Thanks man I heard about this interview and wanted to see it.

Isn't Youtube fun?
I am surprised that Machida really seemed to roll with the interview well. The beginning of it played up Shogun as a strong foil and in particular, asked after Machida’s mistakes.
The host must really have his trust for the talk to be that open.
Nice job, Orcus.
Ribbit.
I thought they were good questions
and Machida carried himself quite well with good answers
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
They were great questions, but it’s hard to get someone to engage in those lines of inquiry – especially when image and protection of that image is such an integral part of the business.
You could tell Machida wasn’t happy with the urine therapy question etc., but he really did do a good job in engaging and giving solid answers. I respect the host (and you, Orcus) for bringing this to us fans.
And why in the nine hells would you boo either of these two fighters after that fight? Ugh…
Ribbit.
it could be that the translation made the questions appear more unreasonable than they actually were, I didn’t get the feeling Machida was uncomfortable with any of the questions at all. Both were very amicable throughout the whole interview.
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
It helps that Machida had been dealing with the urine questions/jokes for over half the year by that point — the original admission to TATAME included him admitting that he didn’t say it in English, much less to American fans, because of the inevitable jokes at his expense; I think he just started talking more candidly about it once he won as awesomely as possible and was safe from mockery.
Why does it seem as if Brazilian fighters are somehow unaware of TATAME having an English language edition? See Cris Cyborg’s very unfortunate surprise at the Internet finding out about the Playboy offer…
I have to search for that Cyborg reaction, do you have a link? I haven’t seen it.
the thing about the media here is that they do put you on the spot, they aren’t trying to portray them in a bad way, just playing around with them. It’s something to let the fans know of things that they otherwise would not. For example, there are many die hard fans in Brazil that will read Tatame daily, but a lot of casuals do not, so for them the urine therapy thing was probably something new. In the Shogun interview that you asked (I’ll probably have it up on the weekend), they asked him why no one understands what he says (he’s got some pronunciation problems), and Shogun jokingly answered. Perhaps in a different culture that could be viewed as a dick move, but they were just playing around.

From here:
Sherdog.com: Playboy had made an inquiry about you posing nude in their magazine. How did that pan out?
Santos: (Silence)
Sherdog.com: Was it an embarrassing story for you when it was revealed?
Santos: Yeah, for sure. I heard people were talking about it on the Internet and I probably commented to only two or three people that knew about it. Less than 24 hours later, I went online and saw my picture with everyone talking about the Playboy (offer). I just wanted to die! I went into desperation mode: how did everybody know about it? It was very, very uncomfortable because it wasn’t something I’d said yes to. It was just a possibility. I hadn’t even had a chance to talk to my husband about it, but once I did, he wasn’t very happy about it at all. It wasn’t supposed to come out. It was literally just one conversation I’d had with one person. I don’t think it’s what I need to be focusing on right now, especially since Cyborg isn’t too happy about it.Was this interview before or after Shogun’s “Joinha-induced media boycott” mentioned in Portal da Vale Tudo? :P
right before UFC 110
but they mention Shogun had promised not to do anymore interviews. It was not a one-on-one as the Machida interview, and it was probably around 20 min only.
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
Great stuff
Thanks man.
Btw, I’m trying to learn Brazilian Portuguese, any suggestions on words I should know? My main interest is for use in the gym, I want to know what my trainers are saying that isn’t necessarily fighting related. Feel free to email me.
"I love it when a guy is bleeding on top of me." -- Diego Sanchez, post fight interview about his fight with Clay Guida
I also like how Mario Filho (the host/interviewer) called Lyoto Machida’s influence/prestige in Belem second only to a singer’s and Lyoto immediately pointed out that there was a band up there along with her, then himself, along with unspecified other famous people. Although, the potshots at other karate styles are amusing, since he doesn’t bring up kyokushin among the styles that he’s claimed to have stagnated and lost the martial way.
Here‘s another interview Lyoto’s done, this year. Could you translate this one as well, orcus? Obrigado.
hey Chortles, I just watched that clip, and there isn’t anything new brought in that interview. I’ll take requests to translate something, but if it doesn’t bring something new than it’s just repetition. Hope you understand, sorry :p
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
Fair enough, I was hoping there’d be new. What’s the problem with that host though?
Hoping to see a similar post-104 interview with Shogun by Mario Filho soon, before the rematch.
I just don't like him
and he doesn’t know anything about the sport either, he’s the type of late, late, late night show host that you know people are watching because he’s still on tv, but you personally don’t know anyone that watches it. he sucks :p
I’ll do Shogun’s interview though (in Sensei), I’ll try to post it in the weekend when I have more time as I did this one.
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
Hey Orcus
what does he say about the nickname the dragon at the beginning? I wonder if he made it up or somebody gave him that name
hmm that’s strange. “Ryu” is dragon in Japanese. “To” is an add-on that indicates maleness. For him to be Dragon he should be “Ryuto.” Maybe he meant his name sounded like Dragon in Japanese?
BTW, his new son is named Taiyo, which literally means “Sun.” Very strong name :)
Not necessarily… the kanji for dragon can also be read as “tatsu,” or I think “ryo.” (At least, I would that that explains Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting and King of Fighters, the former of which has a “dragon/tiger” theme.) Hence originally being called Ryoto Machida in English early on apparently.
could there be other words that means Dragon? I find it strange that he’d make that up though, I found this on another site:
In Japanese, "Lyoto" means dragon, when a friend recommended he adopt "Dragon" as a nickname to relate to American fans, Machida gave his blessing. He laughed when he found out the UFC added a dragon roar to their promo for UFC 84. He hadn’t seen it himself, but was going to cruise YouTube later and watch it. He was unaware internet fans were comparing him to another karate practitioner—the fictitious Ryu from the video game series Street Fighter.
He says it’s “Lyoto” that means Dragon and not Ryoto, which was his nick previously. But I’m guessing maybe there are different words that have the same meaning?
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
Isn’t it the same? Spelled Ryoto, pronounced Lyoto…or spelled Lyoto, pronounced Ryoto? L being like soft R?
by dancingChicken on Mar 10, 2010 10:27 AM EST up reply actions
I just searched a bit on this, looks like they replace L’s with R’s and vice versa, so I guess Lyoto is pronounced Ryoto in Japan, which probably converts to “Ryuto” as someone stated above. we learn new things everyday :p

Thanks
Thanks for work. Really insightful interview. UFC should put this on their site.
Now I am looking forward to the rematch even more.
If Forest can beat Page for the belt with leg kicks Shogun should be able to as well. When the bell rings the look on Machida’s face says loser while Shogun’s say winner. machida is shocked that he won.
The owner of the promotion says that Shogun got robbed. The crowd in the stands who weren’t effected by goldies or rogans commentary boo in unison when Machida is awarded the winner.
Anyone who watched the fight could see Shogun was in control. Immediate rematches don’t happen for no reason.
There’s simply to much evidence. Quite simply the judges blew it again.
This however does not mean that Shogun will win the next time. I believe that was the best gameplan anyone can come up with to beat Machida. Machida likely learned from last fight and will make adjustments.
I don’t think machida can be knocked out. His defense ofhis face is superb so superb that the only way Shogun thought he could win was to completely abandon attacking the face.
Now I can understand if u say leg kicks dont win you a fight but Foresst winning doesnt help tht.
Yea its a corrupt world but what can you do?
