Did the doctor’s stop it or did he quit? They were saying doctor’s stoppage on the show but they announced it as he didn’t answer the bell to start the round.
During the replay
There was a guy in a suit that came up and looked at the cut on his face, saw his hand, and then turned to the ref and waved it all off.
Dunno if that was the “doc” or not. But I mean, even if he DID quit, you can’t blame the guy. if his hand is broken, there’s not much else he can do from there.
Even if he did call it off, anyone implying that he’s a pussy has no concept of success or prioritization. There hasn’t been any of that here, but I’ve seen it in comments under other posts. His hands are his livelihood. He would have risked permanently damaging himself by fighting with a break that bad. I write for a living. When a deadline comes up I’ll work 7am to 12am every day until I’m finished. A lot of times, I end up sick after that. I wear myself out and end up with weird illnesses like shingles. When I get sick, I don’t work. I stay in bed until I’m 100%. I lose a little bit of time and money by doing that, but I’ve found that if I don’t take care of myself, I’ll be out for a month, which will cost me far more in $ and time. I have to prioritize my long-term health over short term projects. In my view, that’s what Bowles did if he called it off. I respect that more than the bravado of someone who fights through a serious broken bone. It may be exciting when a fighter puts his health on the line to prove something or because he just doesn’t know when to quit, but it isn’t (usually) a wise decision. Yes, there will be situations where a fighter should suck it up and make the most of an opportunity. This wasn’t one of those situations in my mind. Yes, he was defending the belt, but he’s what, 9 fights into his career now? There’s (hopefully) more money to be made by the smaller fighters down the line, and sacrificing his health now could result in greater future loss.

Thank you
I was sick getting online last night and seeing all the tough guy, “What a pussy! He quit because of a broken hand???” responses.

I don't have a problem with the fight being stopped.
I’d just like to see him give Cruz his due in postfight comments, rather than implying the only reason he lost was injuries.
He was completely lost last night. Totally outclassed. Talking about his broken hand like it was the only problem is disingenuous at best, and doesn’t give Cruz the credit he so rightly deserves.
Whatever. After last night, I would have to see Bowles actually beat Cruz before I would believe it could happen. I think Bowles was thoroughly and completely exposed last night, broken hand or no.
Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

Faber fought Brown w/ 2 broken hands
and still went 5 rounds. im just saying…
Not all fractures are equal!
Maybe it’s an impacted fracture where several bones were actually forced into each other, maybe it was a comminuted fracture and the bone broke into multiple fragments. From the x-rays I saw, Fabers looked like transverse fractures which are relatively “clean”, meaning that the fracture itself is the most severe damage. If you get a comminuted fracture, all of a sudden it’s like having 5 or 6 shards of sharp ass bone damaging soft tissue with every impact. Who knows how bad his hand is broken, but just because Faber did it, doesn’t mean Bowels could too.

This is the last comment like this before I start handing out infractions. This is borderline fighter bashing and clearly idiotic.

You're absolutely right! Comparing injuries is against my religion!
He’s got no business talking about Faber that way. Or Rich Franklin. Or Fedor Emelianenko. Or…
Just curious, is it also fighter bashing to point out that Brett Rogers took a ninth of the time Fedor did to knock Andrei Arlovski out? Or heavily and repeatedly implying that a fighter who has never pissed dirty or shows impossible gains is juicing? Or out and out calling a fighter mentally unstable on account of his face tattoo?

I lol'd
tabreaz said - "Brock a national champion? Are u actually seriously saying brock is better than rogers due to him being a champion in a completely differant sport?"
Isn't Youtube fun?
What exactly are you talking about?
We’re not allowed to express the opinion that we would have preferred that he had went one more round so that if it was 3-0 on the round count and he knew he wasn’t going to knock him out without the right before he gave up the ghost?
Or that we think it was weaksauce that he specifically went out of his way to mention he broke it on the very first punch and he wasn’t really focused on the fight after that, somewhat denigrating Cruz’s victory?
Or that he specfically said in the cage after the fight that it wasn’t the pain that made him quit, but the fact he couldn’t focus on fighting because he was too worried about his hand, and how that might make me, and others question his mental toughness?
Or are we just not in general allowed to compare Faber’s toughness/decision making to Bowles toughness/decision making?
I’m all for keeping a tight leash on things, but all four of these are valid topics of conversation IMO and none of them even come close to fighter bashing.
Bowles was more focused on his health than the belt, and that’s definitely a personal decision, but to say it’s clearly idiotic to compare his decision and Faber’s decision is extremely close to flaming the original poster just for giggles since it’s clearly not an idiotic comparison.
You could make the point that Faber’s career and value as a fighter wouldn’t be half of what it is without that more guts than brains performance against Brown, so I wouldn’t call his decision to keep fighting with a broken hand(s) idiotic. I also wouldn’t call Bowles an idiot for quitting when he did, but I would say the way he went about things did make himself look worse than he had to.

Rec’d.
I agree with everything you just said, however, Td9d’s comment above was borderline trolling. He added no insight to the comparison between Bowles and Faber and hence his comment could have been construed a thousand different ways. Had he offered any of the thoughts you listed I’m sure he wouldn’t have copped any flack.
You are missing the point here. The running the site have been doing this long enough to know when a post is going to take a discussion somewhere that is shouldn’t go. Your very long post about numerous issues and the guy above’s one sentence attack are two entirely different things.
I kind of agree with both of you...
But my issue is/was that any one of the topics I brought up could be inferred or are directly related to what he mentioned. He certainly wasn’t the most eloquent of conversation starters, but I thought Fagan taking the time to call it idiotic and fighter bashing meant there was more to it than just not explaining himself.
I won’t even pretend that I don’t think less of Bowles as a fighter after last night, just like I won’t pretend that I thought more of Faber after his performance.
I guess my question is what the line on fighter bashing actually is, for instance calling a fighter overrated/talking about mob ties(Fedor), boring(Sylvia), a freakshow BBQ figher(Kimbo), a insert derogatory Republican term(Sonnen), various roid allegations(Uberreem/Lesnar), Kung Fu Fighting Porn Parties(War Machine), or just generally degrading a fighters skills in one area or another all seem to be allowed in large part the majority of the time. Calling Bowles a pansy or something much worse is definitely over the line, but is it acceptable to say he seems to be mentally weak, like you’d say X’s striking is poor, or Y looks terrible off his back?
Something as simple as a clarification of backing up what you’re talking about being the measuring stick would be fine by me, as I actually enjoy the hard line taken on the pure mindless garbage other MMA sites have. It just kind of rubs me the wrong way when I see something decried as idiotic and fighter bashing which is ban-worthy when I had the same thought going through my mind at one point.
It’s like I had some kind of ’Nam flashback with Dana White screaming “So you want to be a WEC champion?”

I’ve had plenty of my post up and disappear before, it’s not all that big of an issue and nothing to really worry about. Some comments can lead to messes even if they start out mostly innocent or well meaning. Of course in some situations it’s pretty obvious that people are just pushing for a fight on here too.
In this situation the internet has been all abuzz since last night about this topic, I’m sure Fagan was aware of that and moved to put a cap on it before it started up here.
Tim Sylvia wanted to keep fighting too after Mir snapped his forearm in half...
But it’s safe to say it would not have been intelligent for him to do so.
And I’m going to take the high route and leave it at that.

Worth noting
He later thanked Herb Dean for stopping that fight, saying that if Herb hadn’t stopped the fight Tim would’ve had to retire.
Huh, never knew that. It was sickening to watch, but Tim acted as if nothing had happened. It’s amazing what adrenaline does to the mind i guess. Herb Dean’s words as he’s pulling them apart are forever ingrained in my brain. Tim is a real stand-up guy, it doesn’t shock me at all that he’d give Herb Dean his deserved credit.

and faber’s time off due to those broken hands was increased exponentially every minute he continued that fight. shows a level of toughness sure. could also show a level of idiocy.

eh
Bowles was toast without that right hand. His punches looked weaker in the 2nd round and Cruz was using his speed to out-wrestle him. Faber is a different animal offensively.
From what I understand that is a hard bone to break, he must have really put his hips into that one.
“(Bowles) Corner Stopped the Fight”

Bowles broke his hand during the round and his corner told him to stop. Cruz won the title. Crowd booing thinking he quit. A lot of guys would have gone on, but it was probably the smart move. Anti-climactic finish to the match.
