My Thoughts on WEC 47

WEC 47 has come and gone and it really blew me away.  Here are a few of my post event thoughts on what I witnessed last night...

Ted Nugent has some magical power - My friend Phil actually turned to me as Benavidez walked to the cage and said he was going to win by choke.  He may not know much about MMA, but he's a huge Ted Nugent fan and he remembers what Randy Couture did at UFC 109.  This was the second time in a month that a fighter used "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent as their entrance music and then proceeded to win via choke submission in the second round of their fight.  Coincidence?  I think not.  Randy Couture won via rear naked choke over Mark Coleman and now Joseph Benavidez with his incredible guillotine against the heavily favored Miguel Torres.  I fully expect the Nuge to be getting a huge revival in the MMA entrance department.

It's a shame Jens Pulver's career ended this way - Jens has been around forever, but mixed martial arts has only exploded in popularity in the past few years.  The hardcore fans remember Jens for his amazing run as the first UFC lightweight champion and his career defining victory over BJ Penn but new fans of MMA have seen Jens go 1-7 over the past 3 1/2 years and have watched him lose via first round stoppage in his past four fights.  I would have given anything to see Pulver string together one last run of W's before calling it a career, but not all wishes come true.  He sounded pretty intent on calling it quits when they interviewed him in the cage tonight.

Urijah Faber spoiled us - Last June in the main event of WEC 41, Urijah Faber fought 3+ rounds with two broken hands in a practically inhuman effort to win back his featherweight title from Mike Brown.  The general consensus from some of my friends and from members of MMA message boards I frequent has been that Brian Bowles should have kept fighting after sustaining the broken hand.  Broken hands hurt, and don't forget that Bowles also busted the same hand in his last fight with Miguel Torres last August.   He said he broke it on the first punch that connected with Cruz's head so that means he probably fought some of the first and all of the 2nd round with a broken hand.  Give the guy a break (no pun intended).

Scott Jorgensen is an animal - Scott Jorgensen gained a lot of fans with his victory over former title challenger Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 45 in December, but that didn't earn him any favors in the WEC.  Despite the big win, he was relegated to the undercard against Chad George who was riding a 6 fight win streak.  How did Jorgensen respond?  He stuffs George's first takedown attempt and proceeds to slap on one of the most viscous guillotines I've ever seen to win in 31 seconds of the first round.  Jorgensen literally used the cage as leverage for the choke and then started lifting George up in the air to make the guillotine even tighter.  When Jorgensen let the choke go, George was already out cold.  The fight got shown on the main broadcast and my friends and I were in absolute awe as we watched it enfold.

MMA's unpredictability makes it great - Three heavily favored main card fighters were defeated by stoppage tonight (Torres, Bowles, Darabedyan).  What's the fun of watching something if you already know what's going to happen?  I expected a clinic by Miguel Torres, but instead I became a huge fan of Joseph Benavidez and his incredible confidence in himself.  I was amazed by the comeback spirit of Bart Palaszewski as he looked for, and got an opening on the ground against the hot shot prospect in Karen Darabedyan.  Lastly, you had to be impressed with the speed and tenacity of Dominick Cruz.  He made the champ, Brian Bowles, look like he was moving in slow motion for much of that fight.

Seriously, Faber is inhuman. The fact that he fought with broken hands for an entire five round fight is rediculas. Now a fighter breaks his hand, still fights for 1-2 rounds, and people are questioning his heart.

Yea there is no reason to crap on a guy for only fighting 9 minutes with a broken hand instead of 20+.

I agree with you about Pulver. My hope is that Zuffa honors him and provides him with some sort of ambassador position for all that he’s done for the sport.

They need to put Pulver in the color commentator position, Bonner sucked last night and Mir is on the outs with Zuffa brass for his stupid comments. Give Jens the color position full time and let him do the in ring interviews too. That’s not just because the guy deserves a lifetime job with Zuffa it’s because he is good at it.

by who me on Mar 7, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

He’s one of my heroes. I can’t think of many other fighters who wear their heart like he does. I don’t know if Mir is on the outs but I just think that Jens carries a level of respect with the lighter weight fighters that he would be the best person for the job. Like was Zuffa was planning to do with Chuck once he retires, I hope that they do the same for the guys who sacrificed so much for them while the sport was still small (Hughes, Chuck, Jens…) with some sort of career because they deserve it.

I think there are certain guys who will need that type of stuff to keep themselves involved with the sport (Jens, Chuck) and there are guys who will always be involved with the sport due to their ablitity to train other fighters and run their own gyms (Randy, Hughes, Tito even).

by Fedorable on Mar 7, 2010 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

I just think that at a certain point Zuffa should say “you sacrificed so much when the paydays weren’t big, here’s a lifetime career”. Jens is someone who to me was never fighting for money, for him it was about proving something about himself and he will always be a favorite of mine because of that. His story if you haven’t read his book, is amazing and Zuffa really has the chance to honor him. I hope they do.

Bonnar doesn’t have the best voice, but I thought his commentary was good.

by Dropkick434 on Mar 8, 2010 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

I didn’t care for him at all, he didn’t seem to add much of anything to the broadcast and didn’t even have Frank Mir’s over the top antics. Bonner was just there, when Jens filled in he really added to the show.

by who me on Mar 8, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Bonnar did a pretty straight job. Bonnar isn’t over the top like Mir, but he isn’t as arrogant either. I think Bonnar is able to analyze and announce the fights without ever making it about himself unlike Mir. Sometimes I think Mir is more interested in bringing up anecdotes to show what a scary smart fighter he is rather than add to the broadcast.

I don’t really remember Jens commentary, so I can’t comment on that. But I wouldn’t mind seeing him more. He puts together post fight speeches very well, and I just want to see the guy make money in this sport the most visable way possible now that his fighting days are probably over.

good post

Given that Cruz has already defeated Benavidez, should they do Bowles v Benavidez for a title shot?

by sillycaboose on Mar 7, 2010 12:19 PM EST reply actions

shoot

I meant Jorgensen v Benavidez

by sillycaboose on Mar 7, 2010 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

who knows

There are a TON of guys that could potentially get a shot at 135, but the two most likely right now would be Benavidez and Damacio Page I believe. Page is fighting at WEC 48 and still has to win before people start tossing his name around.

by Brian Hemminger on Mar 7, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Cruz vs Benavides II and Torres vs Bowles II please. Imagine the pressure on Torres of losing 3 in a row? Or Bowles from going undefeated to losing 2 straight? I love this sport!

I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say Cain "pillowhands" (as some of you have called him) lol Velasquez catches Nog right on the chin and finishes via strikes on the ground. Nog looked good against an old Randy. It didn't show me much. We’ll see.

he had a loss before that (which was avenged)

by bigweeze on Mar 7, 2010 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

I thought it was the usual from the WEC, a pretty good night of fights. My disappointment is with Bowles and Torres. Not that they were injured, or even that they lost, but rather that they were outperformed pretty badly in their fights.

Usually, this wouldn’t be much of a concern to me, but with PPV looming, it kind of left me somewhat worried about the prospect. We just saw two of their stars dismantled and I can’t help but wonder what is going to happen next month.

by BJJDenver on Mar 7, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

I def wouldn’t call Bowles a stat. I’m quite sure the WEC brass are incredibly relieved Cruz won this. Bowles has such low star power its ridiculous.

by LtotheK on Mar 7, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

Bowles? I meant to say Dirk Diggler! Seriously, could he look any more like him??

Yeah, he has little star power, but I think a rematch with Torres might have been a nice sell for them, much like Brown/Faber was.

And is Cruz the Peyton Manning of MMA, lol? Watching him jump around and duck and feint was like watching Manning and his annoying calls at the line.

I am with you. I don’t know what the deal was with The Score, but I actually quit watching because of the “technical difficulties”.

That’s 2 losses in a row now for Miguel. He prob needs to stop twittering so much and focus on winning something. His own hype has drowned his focus it seems.

by LtotheK on Mar 7, 2010 5:58 PM EST reply actions

Yep

It was definitely taking twenty minutes a day to keep in touch with fans that made him lose.

I wonder how Frank Mir took the news of Torres loss?

by Brian Hemminger on Mar 7, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Torres’ skills and gameplans especially just aren’t up with his reputation at this point. Three poorly fought fights in a row, though he did get by Mizugaki.

by bigweeze on Mar 7, 2010 11:44 PM EST reply actions

Torres was a huge disapointment, it ok to lose all fighters do but he looked scared to throw his hands and worst he looked like a novice on the ground the way he was chocked left me speechless for 10 minutes.

I don’t know who that guy was or maybe Bowles ruined him but that wasn’t Miguel Torres that was a shell of his former self. I really want to hear what he has to say about this in a week or so because for him of all people to be schooled like he was truly was shocking.

by Raker on Mar 8, 2010 2:30 AM EST reply actions

I think it’s safe to say that Bowles ruined him. You see it with a lot of fighters when they get KO’d like Torres did. Either they learn from it and respond well or they come out and look hesitant. I knew Torres was in trouble when he started out so slow and wasn’t aggressively looking for openings. The guy had a 10 inch reach advantage and looked hesitant to throw, I was amazed. He didn’t just lose to Benevidez he was dominated like no one else on that card.

I don’t know where Torres goes from here but that was a really bad loss.

by LtotheK on Mar 8, 2010 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

Not Quite Sure About That

I wouldn’t say Bowles ruined him, Benavidez was simply a really good matchup to defeat Torres. He had a lot of power and speed, and he used it to get inside and avoid his jabs. Also, he’s just so damn strong that he was able to get Torres to the ground with his wrestling. I thought his timing for takedown attempts was perfect.

I think one thing that screwed with Torres was that he overreacted to his loss to Bowles. You shouldn’t just go and dump everything that made you great just because you got caught with a punch in a title fight. He won 17 straight fights with the system he was using in Chicago and he dropped everything and tried to become a more defensive fighter by training around the US. That was probably a mistake.

by Brian Hemminger on Mar 8, 2010 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, Benavides made Torres look slow and imposed the gameplan more effectively. Torres should have been using his reach advantage to keep the fight at a distance, but Benavides made him look slow and got inside rather easily.

If anything, I think Torres was exposed a little bit, with his sometimes looping punches that let Benavides close the distance.

by ultimatefightsource on Mar 8, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

That still doesn’t explain why he was useless on the ground honestly Jens did a better job defending that Torres did where was his top level bjj?. Benevidez is good but he’s not that good, i’ve several of his fights and nothing i’ve seen let me think he could dominate Torres like that.

by Raker on Mar 8, 2010 11:20 PM EST reply actions

Faber didn't beat Brown

To win back his title.

I had the same thought about Stranglehold when he came out to it but I completely forgot about it by the time the fight was over.

I really like Scotty and that guillotine was insane. Super sad about Jens going out the way he did.

I know

I said it was an inhuman effort to win the title back, I didn’t say he actually won it.
