Mike Swick Will NOT Fight Matt Serra on April 17; But Kimbo Slice vs. James Toney Rumors Continue

From Mike Swick's twitter account:

Not fighting Serra guys. Most likely having surgery soon. @oxphos Any truth to Serra fight 4/17? Seems unlikely unless ur arm is better

I think this adds to the need for Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama and probably Kimbo Slice.  Carmichael Dave was saying the following on The Underground early this morning.:

James Toney will make his MMA debut April 17th against Kimbo Slice at Vanderbilt Arena in Tennessee. Mike Swick will fight Matt Serra in the main event.

The fight would air on Spike TV, according to the rumor.

With the Strikeforce card happening the same night, in the same state, this constitutes the first real nuclear bomb that Dana White and Zuffa would drop on their organization, should it be true.

I had Yahoo's Kevin Iole on my radio show just a few minutes ago, and asked him about the rumor. His response: "I think you hit a home run with that one, that's what I've been hearing."

I'm still not sure that they'll run with this fight and I've not heard many people say that it's that close to being a done deal.  Regardless, if they do pull this fight off on the 17th it would be stupid for Strikeforce to not move to the 24th.

Look for news on the full card for the Spike show to come together very quickly over the next week.

Great news… I did not want to see a repeat of Swick vs. Burkman as a main event. I love Serra though.

To be fair

that was Swick’s first time making the cut, and Josh kept clinching. I wouldn’t be so hard on Mike based on that fight

by Shaun32887 on Mar 5, 2010 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Not to mention Serra would be trying to take Swick’s head off for 3 rounds.

by mcatanoso on Mar 5, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

lots of BS rumors

who didn’t know Swick was injured?

he’s only been talking about it on every tweet

so much for “insiders” when they can’t even follow public information.

it’s gonna be more about UFC than any top tier fighters on April 17

my guess is expect NO toney or kimbo or akiyama or silva or liddell, like rumored

by ADAMantium on Mar 5, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions

To get those guys to jump on a last second card to counter CBS is going to cost a fortune. Everyone of their managers would be asking for a healthy raise to help out the UFC.

by nottheface on Mar 5, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

Or, Dana is just putting rumors out there to fuck with Strikeforce.

If that’s the case, he’s laughing his ass off right now. I expect UFC 110 or UFC 111 replay as a counter.

There is no doubt that if Toney was on the card, the publicity that the fight would gain, it would be absurd for Strikeforce to run the show on the 17th. Although i was reading i believe on MMAFighting that Toney said he was in discussion to fight in June or July. In addition it would be a bad move on Toney’s part to fight so quickly before he had appropriate amount of training.

Part of me believes that UFC is trying to play Chicken with Strikeforce, trying to make them switch dates so that there would be an implicit message to fans that Strikeforce is not major promotion by competing with the WEC instead of the UFC.

by pRoXiMo on Mar 5, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

It’s almost certainly not going to be Toney on the 17th.

What can they accomplish

Sending a message?

A kill-shot perhaps?

Knocking Strikeforce’s CBS ratings down a few pegs (even if they still beat the UFC show) so that CBS will think twice about ever running another Strikeforce show?

by Scott Haber on Mar 5, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Making all the media for a week after the event be about the ratings competition

which steals any momentum from SF. And if UFC loses the battle, it’s because they were on basic cable that doesn’t have the same reach as CBS, but were still damaging to the ratings. Then news shifts to WEC, then upcoming UFC shows. Boosh.

If the UFC has been planning to counter the Strikeforce card for some time (its been talked about forever on the blogs) Strikeforce probably had a pretty good inkling about it. At least they should have guessed there was a good chance the UFC would do it. Does that mean that maybe the conflict between M-1 and Strikeforce was because Strikeforce wanted him off the card? Without Fedor they cut $3 mil minimum off the budget which means they’re aren’t risking as much if the UFC counter programmed (Which, of course, the UFC did).

by nottheface on Mar 5, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t THINK so. I think those negotiations were just as transparent as everyone thought they were. M-1 wanted more money and told Strikeforce to pay it. That seemed to be the bulk of it from what I heard.

I like how you stressed THINK. I should really follow your example.

The only reason I say that is someone at Television City mentioned that they were having a show in May. I passed that off as someone who was confused and doesn’t really care or follow mma. But what if Strikeforce was planning a second card in May with Fedor and the other HWs? Things wouldn’t be unfolding any differently if they were, would they? It would also explain Fedor’s renegotiations because t the opportunity was there to really take advantage of Strikeforce.

And this is pure SPECULATION on my part.

It's the WWE/TNA effect

They can’t rely on mainstream sideshows and leftovers/crossovers to win their own market share. They have tons of charismatic, talented, future superstar talent, and they’re burying them on Challengers shows so they become disenchanted and move on to the UFC when their contracts run up. Doesn’t make sense to me..

I think it has to do w/ the paychecks of their current stars. They must use all slots possible on big events like CBS and the Non-Challenger Showtime cards to have funds for the salaries.. They have no choice but to bury the up and comers on Challenger cards because all slots are taken on their major events..

For what it's worth

the guy on the UG who originally posted the rumor about the 4/17 UFN before it was confirmed anywhere else, posted an update earlier today mentioned that Toney would NOT be on this card, although they’re still shooting for Kimbo vs. someone, Silva/Akiyama and either Liddell or Forrest.

by Scott Haber on Mar 5, 2010 2:31 PM EST reply actions

verrry interesting. .....

Thanks for the heads up, the wand fight makes sense. He said we would be surprised how soon he would fight again. Guess he was right. Although I don’t think liddel will be.on the card. Forrest’s fights are always fun to watch. I like it.

by Rayce. on Mar 5, 2010 3:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

this is what he posted

From Timmy B on The UG

"As I announced two days ago, the UFC is going head to head with Strikeforce on April 17th. A few updates on the card…

1. Kimbo Slice will be fighting on it.
2. Liddell or Griffin are still a maybe. Depends on if Strikeforce decides to go with Walker or Canseco for the card. SF is in full on negotiations with both fighters. Neither come cheap.
3. White & Co are expecting to take away between 33% to 50% of the key male demographic (18-34), which will either cancel SF from CBS or force them to pay money they don’t have to get Fedor, their ratings draw.
4. James Toney is not fighting on the card no matter what the speculation is.
5. Coker is semi-bluffing about moving the date. As discussed by a few others, they share the same crew as the Showtime Boxing team. It can be done, however highly unlikely. Moving the date would also cost Coker money and piss off ticketholders.
6. Akiyama vs. Silva is still happening on the card. Just not the main event. Things have blown up in 2 days. White is going for the jugular.

Coker & Company will have to open up their wallets for Canseco/Walker…. Pay them extra to take a fight on short notice. They will lose money on the event…. That is from a confirmed source (all is, just clarifying) They are barely breaking even off a strong gate and just the 3 title fights… Walker/Jose is forced upon them by CBS who does not care if they lose money. They want to beat the UFC in the ratings…."

by DamnSevern on Mar 5, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

How in the world does Toney/Kimbo even pass the sniff test? It will make MMA look like a joke. It accomplishes nothing. The same people that want to see Kimbo fail, also want to see Toney fail. They both have things to prove (at least in the context of MMA) and fighting eachother doesnt get it done. Its a one and done fight, not a build. That is not typical for the UFC.

by orcus on Mar 5, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

No, not top fighters. But Toney is a great boxer who needs to be tested as to how dedicated he is to MMA. Give him something of a challenge. but his dollar figure will be a little high to give him a Mike Whitehead type of lower tier vet. It makes the Couture fight a good one, but thats a high dollar fight that might not be able to be a main event. Kimbo needs a step up from Houston, but not a huge step up. Mitrione is the right fight for his skill level, but if Matt wins it doesn’t benefit him all that much.

Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.

by szucconi on Mar 5, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

my problem is

we don’t know how well Toney’s boxing skills will transition into MMA, he needs a low caliber fighter just like Kimbo does as well. at the end of the day I actually want these guys to win a couple of fights because they’ll definitely bring in new fans to the sport (much like Brock brought in WWE fans), but I actually like the idea of them fighting each other as I think it would be a good fight. If you can get a percentage of boxing fans to watch a full card of MMA, you might just convert a good chunk of them into MMA fans.

Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension

by orcus on Mar 5, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is, unless kimbo has a new ground game, he will be murdered and it wont be close. Not being a close fight, its a star killer. And the problem with Toney getting some lower level fights, is his cost. Otherwise I support that idea. Kimbo on TUF really brought his value into perspective and lowered the expectations on him, it was a fantastic move. Giving Toney a fight, Couture maybe, where he will get pounded out on the ground will humble his value and allow lower level fights to make sense.

Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.

by szucconi on Mar 5, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

If Kimbo was able to suplex Houston

and nearly get the choke on him, I don’t think he’d have a problem doing the same to Toney as long as he doesn’t get KOd while closing the distance.

Huh…I wonder if Kimbo’s ever gotten KOd while closing the distance on someone.

You've got that part right

I’m pissed about 6 (though, it’s still alright). They seem to make a credible sequel every-other time out now. 4 was atrocious.

Toney vs Kimbo isn't happening

I’m expecting Sexy/Wandy and Meathead/Kimbo. That’s plenty good for a Spike counter. Toney will probably end up fighting Randy, in my estimation.

13 year vet

And a pro boxer would undoubtedly get sanctioning against a 47 year old mixed martial artist. Or are you under the impression that Toney won’t be sanctioned against anyone?

Kizer said Toney has to fight someone his own skill level in MMA. He is 0-0 in MMA and has no ground game.

by Jmend255 on Mar 5, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

That said, Kizer admitted it was likely that the commission would more readily approve a Toney matchup with a lesser experienced opponent than one with years of experience.

by Jmend255 on Mar 5, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Sanctioning that fight wouldn’t be a problem.

Toney vs Franklin
Toney vs Couture
Toney vs Chuck

all would get sanctioned.

Brock Lesnar 1-0 was put into a cage with someone who has broken his opponents limbs.

Im not saying he’s going to fight couture… Im saying if Fedor was on the CBS card we would have found out who Toney was going to fight.

How exactly would a free UFC card on the same date hurt Strikeforce on CBS?

Assuming the UFC event is headlined by Wanderlei vs. Akiyama or something comparable…

It’s not like when the UFC countered Affliction PPV events and killed their buy # because people had a free alternative rather than shelling out for PPV. But this time both shows will be free, viewers can watch both events without paying a dime. Counter programming could even draw more attention and free publicity to the SF on CBS event. The projected UFC card isn’t amazing by any stretch, they are going to rush to cobble together a makeshift event and I don’t see it benefiting them.

by Niles on Mar 5, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

First of all, what projected card?

Secondly, CBS has high expectations of Strikeforce. Personally, I feel that they’ll continue airing events under almost any circumstances. But a lot of people in the know feel that CBS is already teetering on whether or not they want to support Strikeforce at all if they can’t deliver on this show. Most likely scenario in my mind is that going head-to-head won’t garner them the sort of ratings execs at CBS are looking for, and future shows will feature shit like Canseco/Walker just to appease them. That could spell future doom.

Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"

by Blackout612 on Mar 5, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Nail on the head…. CBS is already fed up with the shit M1 has been putting them through and coker changing their april 10th date to april 17th didnt help – once the target demo gets slashed it’s gonna be a tough pill to swallow since they are already losing 2million average viewers in that timeslot.

Every single CBS show will be countered both at the timelsot and the gate. Shitfarce will have to move to alaska with Jose Canseco when this is all said and done.

"Nail on the head"

so this part is accurate?

by nottheface on Mar 5, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I dont know about that… they might do one more. Zuffa will counter 4 more or as many as they want.

Somebody will be taking a bath on the 17th and it wont be Zuffa. Unfortunately shitfarce is set up with such small margins it will be devastating. If CBS doesnt Cancel the deal Coker will.

by mmalogic on Mar 5, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

My feeling is that CBS would be open to airing another (or more) show/s at Strikeforce’s expense. I don’t know anything about their numbers, but if people who’ve reported on them are to be trusted (Timmy B, yourself, et al), they’re just barely breaking even w/CBS’s dollar supporting their productions.

Just the standard MMA fan inferiority complex popping up in different forms. Some fans are so desperate for MMA to be taken seriously that these fights are terrifying (even if they haven’t been booked and don’t appear to be happening)

So far Shitfarce has been the only one airing freakshows with walker-nagy, sims vs Lashley and bobb sapp.

If Zuffa brings in Nagy or his little brother to take on Toney then you can make a comparison.

by mmalogic on Mar 5, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Most people don't flip channels between two shows

and most people don’t watch more than one MMA show on one night. If the UFC show takes 1.5 million viewers from the Strikeforce show, that’s a massive, crippling blow to CBS’s ratings and could prove to be a major blow to their contract with Strikeforce.

Cintron in UFC

I want to see Kermit Cintron in the UFC. He told Dana White he would fight anyone he wanted him to in his weight class. Dana White turned down his offer. Why? He is one of the best middleweight boxers there is and prob the hardest hitting and was a state champ in college wrestling for Ohio State I think. He would be a great fighter in the UFC. Dana White needs to have this guy but he won’t cause I think he worried to have someone who is that great at boxing with a background in wrestling in the UFC. He has knocked guys out cold with one punch in the ring with 8 oz gloves on.

Cintron

I take that back he was offered a college full scholarship to ohio state and was a state champ in high school
