UFC Is Going Head-to-Head With April 17th Strikeforce Show on CBS

According to Figure Four Online:

Dana White confirmed today that UFC is running a show on April 17th, head-to-head with the announced Strikeforce show on CBS. The event would air most likely on Spike TV. The Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama match is not the main event. The only thing confirmed is they are trying to finalize a Matt Serra vs. Mike Swick [co-main] semifinal fight today.

There had been talk of a possibility that if UFC scheduled a show on that date, CBS may move the Strikeforce show to April 24th, which would go head-to-head with the WEC PPV in Sacramento.

Even though the April 17th show was not announced yesterday, the issue of the Observer that came out yesterday has a lead story analyzing the whys of this head-to-head battle.

I was wondering that too, maybe they meant it as a co-main event?

You really want to see a fight where Kimbo Slice has better wrestling?

If the point of this is to bring Toney in to get slaughtered, putting James Toney against Slice is a real bad idea.

I think regardless of who the UFC puts on the card, SF is going to see the bump in ratings that CBS wants/expects in going forward.

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

The word on the street is Strikeforce is moving to April 24th.

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn’t they then be competing with the Super 6 tournament which is being broadcast by one of their partners in Showtime?

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

They would be, but at that point it wouldn’t matter because the hit the Super Six takes is offset by the gains Strikeforce makes moving to the 24th. Also, now UFC is counter programming HBO boxing so there is some gains there.

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

After an announcement is made if CBS moves ithe date then the damage has already been done :) Zuffa can’t ask for anything better.

I dont think CBS is that stupid even if Shitfarce is bunch of pussies. The CBS card has a better chance of being canceled than moved to the 24th.

This Strikeforce card was originally scheduled on the 10th but then they took their penis tucked it between their legs and begged CBS to move it to the 17th.

Now a week after they announce their “big event” they’re gonna take that same penis, tuck it and go back to CBS again? not to mention they share the same production crew as showtime boxing which will make it a logistical nightmare.

I told you what was coming. No Can Defend.

by mmalogic on Mar 4, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

It truly is a clusterfuck of massive proportions.

Look, they wanna be one of the big boys then they can’t shy away from the competition. Take the UFC head on, drive a boatload of money up to M-1 and get Fedor on that card, do whatever you have to do but don’t back down.

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

I’’ll give you credit you did tell me it was coming.

Someone gave me an interesting breakdown of the situation and I’m curious to hear your opinion (OK lets be honest, spin).

Strikeforce is going ahead with the 17th no matter what and the UFC knows it. The UFC is lining up an impressive card to put a big hit on them (Kimbo, Toney, Wndy, Sexy and a Chuck or Tito or Forest). With that UFC lineup they even beat Strikeforce’s overall numbers. But at what cost?
The payroll for those fighters is going to run $1 million or more than what Strikeforce has got lined up, thanks to Fedor not being on the card. So Strikeforce is going to make $60,000 a 30-sec buy on CBS, compared to $40,000 for the UFC. So license fee wise Strikeforce might make a cool million more and probably take in more on ticket sales, since if the UFC puts the card on in Vegas they need time for out of towners to plan on making the trip.

Strikeforce is going to take a hit but is it going to be a big enough one to put them out of business? And is it worth the effort the UFC is putting into it?

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

I would think the UFC’s main goal would be to get Strikeforce off CBS, not necessarily run them out of business at this point.

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

also, if they can do damage to cbs’ numbers by putting a show on spike, that makes them look better to cbs/the other networks.

by Phildo on Mar 4, 2010 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

The UFC’s success is what keeps them off networks. There is just no way for anyone to pay close to what they make on ppv.

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

It also has to with production control, the UFC, rightfully, doesn’t want someone to come in and butcher the production the way Showtime and CBS do.

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

lol ufc’s production is way horriblerer than strikeforce’s fer shure

by Postpubescent on Mar 4, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

by Polyhedron on Mar 5, 2010 4:42 AM EST up reply actions

It’s a combo of both, the other people aren’t the best at production, but if the price was reasonable, there would be a jump.

It makes zero sense to take less money AND put on a worse product.

by Phildo on Mar 5, 2010 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

That was his point, that they already cut costs enough that they’d wouldn’t take a huge hit on less than stellar ratings.
In other words enough to live to fight another day. But who knows will TV bean counters.

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think so.

Reality is reruns are cheaper and get a higher rating. CBS is hoping to build something solid for the future with SF but if they are going to have to consistently go head to head with the UFC, is it really worth it?

by Worldisart on Mar 4, 2010 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

But who knows willwith TV bean counters.

by John Nash on Mar 4, 2010 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

you know whats funny? Everyone bitches about how under paid the guys in the WEC are yet when the go to PPV as a method to generate more revenue and pay their fighters more everyone shits on it. The WEC PPV is a good solid card. Hardcores here confuse me so much. They act like the voices of the under paid but don’t want to support them when they try to find a means to cover the pay increases.

by Joselana on Mar 4, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

That's not about the fighters though.

The UFC has 4 stacked divisions of top talent and one more top-heavy division. WEC has two good but top-heavy divisions and one division of who gives a shit. The products are not equal, and we don’t want to pay equal prices. Charge half as much and we’ll talk.

thats crap as well because just months ago everyone said they should merge with the UFC and intergrate those weight classes. Those of which would be on PPV and any of those title fights would be a main event. People would buy this same card with less bitching if it had just a UFC label on it. Just becuz both companies are under ZUFFA doesn’t mean the UFC has to carry them. The WEC has to survive on its own merit and not depend on the UFC pumping them up all the time. And since when has any WEC cards been shitty to watch? With this PPV you’ll get your money’s worth.

by Joselana on Mar 4, 2010 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think you just agreed with me.
thats crap as well because just months ago everyone said they should merge with the UFC and intergrate those weight classes.

Yes. Integrate the two good weight classes, watch the LWs wash out, and let the new weights stand equally with the others. Within 2 years, somebody like Miguel Torres with charisma and talent will be as big a draw as BJ Penn and able to carry a UFC PPV with support drawn from seven (count ’em, seven!) world class divisions. Holy shit!

That has nothing to do with a WEC PPV featuring a new champ who hasn’t defended, LW fights that wouldn’t even make the Spike prelims, and a former champ against an unproven TUF loser.

This makes absolutely no sense…

The UFC has 5 divisions and puts on 13 ppv’s a year…. The WEC has 2 top divsions and is putting on ONE ppv….

Use a calculator this time and you’ll conclude that the WEC is the better value based on you’re own criteria.

by mmalogic on Mar 4, 2010 11:04 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

OR, I'll realize that they are putting on tons of events and not everyone is on that one card

and that the FW and BW divisions are way top heavy, much like HW. I love the lil guys, but it’s not worth paying for by itself. Put Koscheck vs. Daley and Cote vs. Belcher on a card with Miguel vs. [worthwhile competitor] and Urijah vs. Aldo and I’ll pay for it. Add in Henderson vs. Tyson Griffin to fight Gray Maynard for #1 contendership, and I’ll rave that it’s a sick card.

Somehow I never understand this kind of thinking. I mean if going head to head is good PR for CBS and Strikeforce then it turn wouldn’t it have to also be good PR for SPIKE and the UFC? That can’t just be one way street only helping one way.

I see the head to head getting both sides extra PR but then the better advertising and better brand power will win that PR battle. The brand power is obvious who wins and there is no way I see CBS doing a better job selling their MMA product over the UFC selling their MMA product.

Just BE.

really? Didnt Dana say he was interested in toney more than 3 months ago? ok, then…

by mmalogic on Mar 4, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

actually, since 2006, when the ufc was going to put him up against Randy, but then said that they would never sign a boxer because they love the sport so much, so you tell me. Strikeforce being interested in Toney definitely moved along the process…

by Jmend255 on Mar 4, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Strikeforce wasnt even in the negotiations… if toney didnt sign with ZUffa he was going to sign with that show in Massachussets – i believe butterbean runs it along with another character.

The guys trying to put together the “Strong Man guy” vs Tim Sylvia were gonna pit him vs Houstand Alexander.

Toney came to Dana and said just match the real value of this offer and he did. It’s peanuts compared to the strategic benefits of this signing.

But it does look like Dana made Strikeforce bend over to M1 after Coker tried everything in his power not to… ultimately ruining this CBS show… I think that will have lot more impact. haha

"I could do it, make it huge, make money, but I could have done a fight like this when we were bleeding money [in the early 2000s]," White said. "The fight would make some money, but it hurts MMA in the long term. We don’t do that because we love the sport. That’s a Pride or K-1 matchup. It’s not what we do."

Did you believe that?

by Jmend255 on Mar 4, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Just a thought,if dana white says strikeforce doesnt wory him then why is he always countering them?

Because he wont stop until he gets 15 Ferraris motherfucker! lol

Of course he’s threatened.

Just like Apple feels threatened by HTC and Google so they slapped a bunk lawsuit on them earlier this week. They feel threatened like Dana does. Its all good though Googles open Android OS is gonna stomp them by this time next year. =) /nerd talk

Back on topic…
I really cant understand why Dana does it though. Countering. SF messes themselves up without him doing anything. Doesnt he know UFC is Coke and SF isnt even close to Pepsi level? Let them get Cola generic acceptance at least, Dana, FUCK!!! >:(

I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say Cain "pillowhands" (as some of you have called him) lol Velasquez catches Nog right on the chin and finishes via strikes on the ground. Nog looked good against an old Randy. It didn't show me much. We’ll see.

even though the value of that share would expand as SF expands the overall market. Or, he gets a power-boner from being able to destroy other businesses. The latter is far more likely.

I realize it’s not the main event or anything, but Serra/Swick just isn’t the sort of thing you release to the press to scare the competition. Maybe Kimbo, Toney, Couture, some sort of ratings draw. Swick/Serra? Are they trying to scare CBS into thinking there’ll be low guido demos?

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

From Timmy B on The UG

“As I announced two days ago, the UFC is going head to head with Strikeforce on April 17th. A few updates on the card…

1. Kimbo Slice will be fighting on it.
2. Liddell or Griffin are still a maybe. Depends on if Strikeforce decides to go with Walker or Canseco for the card. SF is in full on negotiations with both fighters. Neither come cheap.
3. White & Co are expecting to take away between 33% to 50% of the key male demographic (18-34), which will either cancel SF from CBS or force them to pay money they don’t have to get Fedor, their ratings draw.
4. James Toney is not fighting on the card no matter what the speculation is.
5. Coker is semi-bluffing about moving the date. As discussed by a few others, they share the same crew as the Showtime Boxing team. It can be done, however highly unlikely. Moving the date would also cost Coker money and piss off ticketholders.
6. Akiyama vs. Silva is still happening on the card. Just not the main event. Things have blown up in 2 days. White is going for the jugular.

Coker & Company will have to open up their wallets for Canseco/Walker…. Pay them extra to take a fight on short notice. They will lose money on the event…. That is from a confirmed source (all is, just clarifying) They are barely breaking even off a strong gate and just the 3 title fights… Walker/Jose is forced upon them by CBS who does not care if they lose money. They want to beat the UFC in the ratings…."

I’ve been saying, Kimbo getting pulled out of the website has more to do with counter programming than fighting james toney… Maybe I’m right. haha.

eh, i’ll wait until there is more concrete news before I comment this reminds me of earlier rumors of a supposed UFC show that was going to counter SF and never happened so we’ll see.

Rumored UFC card on Spike April 17th. Vanderbilt arena in Tennessee. Yes, same night and state as strikeforce.

lol really? they are rumored to hold the event in the same state? that’s just…mean.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

It’s actually in the same city, and the arena for the UFC show is (according to our trusty friend Google Maps) only a five minute drive down the road from the Strikeforce arena.

Oo !

Do you have a link to this on google map ? I can’t find both arena…

Google link

Strikeforce is at the Sommet Center (just renamed to the Bridgestone Arena in the last week or so) and Vanderbilt is a major university in Nashville. It looks like there’s an arena on the campus called the Memorial Gymnasium that holds around 15,000. The arena seems a bit large to host a Fight Night card but I couldn’t find a smaller venue in the area.

Canseco/Walker won’t be on the card.
I promise you that.

The UFC card will have Kimbo but no Liddell or Forrest
