Quote of the Day: James Toney Trainer Juanito Ibarra Wants Kimbo Slice

"James Toney will fight anybody. It's up to us to help him figure things out. What I would like to see and what his manager would like to see...Kimbo Slice.

"It makes sense. The weight factor makes sense. Maybe a 220 [lbs.] fight somewhere in there. Two guys who have great names. I would love to see that fight ...I think that's a great opponent ...hopefully the UFC would consider something like that."

James Toney's trainer Juanito Ibarra talking to Bleacher Report.

[UPDATE] by Nick Thomas - Kimbo Slice's manager welcomes James Toney fight but says nothing is currently in works:
"Slice's absence (from the UFC 113 event page) does not mean he has other plans."

They talking about ground game? That don’t mean nothing to me dog. Number one, I ain’t going to allow none of them boys to lay on top of me like a lil’ f*g, you know what I’m saying? I ain’t going to the ground; that ain’t happening, you know what I’m saying?

He most likely has not skills to prevent it and less skills to get up. Like a Kongo very early in his career, but with less wrestling and kicks. Well, and tons more power and I would think less gas.

I’m assuming you’re saying it’s not the same because he didn’t use the F word? Based on that assumption, would not using the F word somehow makes it ok? He’s definitely throwing the idea that BJJ is gay and at the same time making himself appear homophobic. The substance of what he’s saying is just as bad as using the F word himself.

I have nothing against Chael (or Toney), I myself think both him and Toney are using these tactics as a hype mechanism, but if you’re going to have a problem with one than you should also have a problem with the other.

by ununkvadrium on Mar 4, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

no

in his defense there are other fighters who say the same thing, he’s not saying something that hasn’t been said by others in the MMA world before. I see nothing wrong with what I wrote there, but hey, if you are really going to go after this on a literal level, I give in. it’s a pointless debate IMO. peace…

What a cop out

Why wouldn’t I mark words when words express meaning? So what if people have said stupid shit before? If you repeat stupid shit it’s still – guess what – stupid shit.

Nevertheless, him being quoteable rests more on his absurd argument for why he’s not going to get taken/held down than on his homophobia. Amirite?

by ununkvadrium on Mar 4, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

of course not, does he really believe he can’t get taken down? I don’t think he does, he’s saying things to get people fired up, which is working. The same thing Chael is doing as of late. Sure, if he repeats stupid things, they don’t stop being stupid, but I’m in no outrage over it, I can see through his BS. I still want to see both him and Chael get their asses handed to them for saying these things, they are responsible for their mouths, but I am in no outrage over what they are saying. Hype 101 as I see it.

Dana's word means nothing

He called Kimbo a freakshow the entire time he was in Elite XC and Kimbo is now in line for a main card fight. He talks trash about Toney and then signs him.

Put him in with Kimbo. That’s exactly the circus fight he was brought to participate in. This is a joke.

There is two exceptions to that though.

When it’s a slow news day and someone wants to write a story about it.

Also in the comment section of every MMA website known to man.

In both those cases the grain of salt can either be taken or completely ignored for the sake of a good story or a good argument.

I am totally a mma snob.

I feel like Couture is the only match that makes sense. Limbo is not martial artist or is a very new one to say the least. He will still win on the ground, but I feel like this does nothing to legitimize mma.
Atleast the douches in the bedazzled shirts will have something to be happy about at this ufc.

None of that listed

Would get mainstream media to care. Mainstream media cares when they can make money covering the sport. No one is not watching because there isn’t rankings or compustrike. All would be nice but it doesn’t get eyeballs or mainstream media cover.

Since Dana said he runs a sporting organization and hates freak shows.

That’s the real problem with this is that the UFC is held to a higher standard because, well, Dana set a higher standard for himself. He should live up to it. All this said, I’m not gonna knock him for this fight until it’s announced. I’d still be better than the “FUCK SCOTT COKER FOR MAKING WALKER VS. CANSECO!” fanboys, but not by enough.

And this is coming from somebody anxiously awaiting SUPER HLUK TOURNEY! part 2. I’m ok with some spectacle getting in my sport, just really prefer that it happens in Japan. That way when people try to criticize MMA, we can retort “Those guys buy used panties in vending machines to sniff while they watch tentacle porn. It’s not representative of the sport.”

I think that is wh it took so long for Dana to agree to sit down with Toney. He thinks Toney isn’t just a straight forward boxer. At the same time he knows the public perception is that it would look like a freakshow. I think Dana has been trying to get more boxers to try to cross over to MMA. He is probably hoping this will get younger boxers to start training grappling and takedown defense and make the crossover to MMA. Recently MMA has been like going to the pros for more wrestlers and anything that would encourage more strikers to join will be a good thing.

Hopefully this will piss off some younger boxers after seeing Toney get worked over and motivate them to actually do the work to show that they can be competitive in a MMA rules fight.

I can't believe it

but Kimbo’s advantage on the ground is going to be pretty big.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

I don't mean to continue the speculation

but is this officially considered a Dream Fight?

I swear, if this DOES happen and if Kimbo wins, he gets my utmost, undisputed respect.

It’s a weird dream.

Make that bread

Looks like Dana is all about the $ this will bring in. Can’t say I blame him. This brings even more exposure. Throw in some actual talent and you got a card with more hype than UFC 100. As a matter of fact… I’d put this fight on Brock’s return card. Big things.

Kimbo/Mitrione was never on UFC.com to begin with. It hadn’t been officially announced yet.

by Tim Burke on Mar 4, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions

It was announced on the last PPV...

but you are correct. It was never actually listed on their UFC 113 site. I wish people would pay attention to this fact before running wild with speculation.

by William Wilson on Mar 4, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

I saw it on there last week when I was going through my fantasy picks.

by swells2048 on Mar 4, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

*sigh*

I’ve checked the site every freakin’ day (yes, I’m a geek) and they have never once had it up on UFC.com UFC 113 page. Maybe they had it on fantasy picks, but it has never, ever been on UFC.com’s UFC 113 page.

by William Wilson on Mar 4, 2010 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Hate to break it to you...

but, while the UFC did officially announce Kimbo vs. Mitrione, they never actually had it up on the UFC 113 website. It has never been up there. So it couldn’t have been pulled.

by William Wilson on Mar 4, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions

ditto

This fight was confirmed but someone find the press release of this fight or grab an old screenshot when it was on there. It was never on there.

by aarondramp on Mar 4, 2010 2:17 PM EST reply actions

Look at everyone getting bent out of shape over a fight that has never been announced and most likely will never happen.

Kimbo vs Toney Is a great ppv draw for the UFC. I wouldn’t put it as a main event but I think the fight would look good on the Rampage vs Rashad card on the May 29th or The Lesnar title defence in July as both those fights seem to be shaking up as the next 2 main events for the Las Vegas cards and we all know that where this fight is going to take place.

It makes the most sense for James to fight Kimbo since any other big name fighter in the UFC would be able to take him down and outclass him on the ground with ease. Kimbo on the other hand might be able to take James down, but he has shown no submission skills and is the the biggest ppv draw that the UFC can match him with that Toney would be remotly close with in terms of ground skills.
