Lyoto Machida Talks Strategy for Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua - "We Don’t Know What’s Going to Happen"
In an interview with tatame.com:
"Look, I’m trying to forget it (the first fight). It’s a new fight. Shogun is a very eclectic fighter, he has this capacity of changing. I’m focusing some aspects and we don’t know what’s gonna happen."
On training with Cain Velasquez (early 2008):
"I trained with him when I was going to face Tito Ortiz. I went after a good guy in wrestling, he wasn’t in the UFC yet. We trained together for a couple weeks and I felt he was a tough guy, had a lot of heart. It’s really important in the sport. A lot of people has talent, but will and persistence? He trained a lot, he’s a really tough fighter. A loss can happen to anyone. Velasquez deserved the victory, but Minotauro has his chances. He’s a great fighter and I knew none of them would give up the fight. It’s like tennis… Today Federer is winning, but tomorrow a new guy can come and defeated him."

And then the guy that defeats Federer blows out his knees all the time and Federer goes back into cruise control.
But I see his point =).

both Shogun and Lyoto are echoing each other, saying that this will be a new fight and everyone should scratch the first. I am willing to believe both that they are looking for different strategies, and that this will be a totally different fight. So psyched for this!
WAR SHOGUN!

Federer is good as gold as long as he’s not playing against that pesky young Spaniard Nadal. I love their matches.
I expect Rua to implement the exact same plan. Go for takedowns, nail those leg kicks from the muay thai stance and be more aggressive. What will Machida do, time will tell.

the thing about taking Machida down though is that it’s too hard and he’ll spend a lot of energy in trying to execute it. He has said in other interviews since the fight that it was a bad plan to try to take him down and he realized that in the fight. Unless he’s been training wrestling nonstop to try to improve his TDs ability, I don’t see him wasting time with it.
The leg kicks I certainly see him working it again, but I think now that he’s had a fight with Machida I think he’ll be more comfortable to throw more diverse strikes as well.

True, I’m sure he realized how difficult it was to take him down because he wasn’t successful. I can imagine him attempting to do it maybe in the 3rd or 4th maybe once or twice BUT not as much as he did in the first fight.
Agreed, I expect him to present diverse strikes as well as diverse methods of attack. I don’t think it would be wise to show Machida the same thing again and again because sooner or later he will go on offensive mode.

Hey Orcus
Remember that interview with Lyoto he did on tv after the shogun fight ?
You said you would be willing to translate the whole thing if somebody asks…Can you do that please?? I would really appreciate it. I can give you my e mail to send it there if you want.
=)
sure brother
I’ll try to do it this weekend. in the beginning of the year I was having a lot of freetime but now work is starting to pick up again. I’ll try to do it though and make a fanpost for you guys, maybe this weekend or the next. I’m thinking it will take about two hours since the interview is 50 minutes long, but you better watch it!

MMA math = Tennis math
Oh, yes, Meg, yes-yes yes, everything was going swimmingly for you until this. Yes, yes, THIS is the thing that will ruin your reputation, not your years of grotesque appearance, or your awkward social graces, or that Felix Ungerish way you clear your sinuses, no no no, it's THIS. Do you hear yourself talk? I might kill you tonight.
I have the dvd for Machida vs Shogun, and after watching it again, it wasn’t this robbery that many thought that it was, and I can see how some would give the fight to Machida, (or give it to Shogun. It could have gone either way). The thing that really sways opinion is the announcers because they would acknowledge something that Shogun did, but wouldn’t acknowledge anything that Machida did. For example, when Shogun kicked, Machida would sometimes throw a punch to the face at the same time, but the only thing acknowledged was the kick thrown by Shogun. The other thing is that Shogun would throw a powerful body or leg kick and that would get acknowledged by the announcers, but a couple seconds later, Machida would throw a powerful body or leg kick that would not get acknowledged.
I am very anxious to see their rematch. I feel that it will be different from their first fight, and I feel that we will see a high level of strategy and technique used in this fight.
it was a real close fight
i agree that it got blown outta proportiob real bad and i actually can understand people saying machida won it was all subjective of that first round really
i dont think shoguns gonna be able to do it again though and machida’s gonna come out with something to prove
Every single fighter who saw the fight who wasn’t Machida’s teammate scored the fight for Shogun. That includes fighters watching in the arena, who weren’t subjected to the “biased” commentary, as you claim. I doubt the commentary is the big influence you claim it to be.
This guy
was in the arena, with awesome seats. And I cannot tell you how many times people said the commentary was what made me know it was a robbery.

One thing is that Shogun definitely won rounds four and five, so as far as lasting impression goes, Shogun looks (to some) to have definitively won because he won the two rounds that people watching at that moment will remember more. Add in that Shogun figured out the “Machida puzzle” and that Machida wasn’t dominating like he was doing in his past fights, and that also sways opinion. I’m not saying it is wrong to say that Shogun won, and I even acknowledged that it could have gone his way as well. To be honest, I felt initially that Shogun won the fight, so I was of the same opinion of those in the arena. However, after watching the fight again in a more analytical way and not solely as a fan, this fight is much different than how I remember it initially playing out (I mean, after watching it again, there are some rounds that could have honestly been a draw).
As far as the “biased” commentary comments, I was directing it more towards people who were watching at home or at a bar and who then posted here.
i just watched that fight yesterday
I had it 4 rounds machidas 1 shogun, I think we were just so used to machida not getting hit we gave it shogun. If his legs were so dead how come he didn’t limp or get taken down?

well. ... not a whole lot.
Not like page did against Forrest. He was in a 25 min fight. He was moving pretty good. Plus those karate guys do that insane ass iron body shiz. I gave it to machida after watching it twice and three times. I like them both so I don’t think I am biased.

I give it to Shogun
but I already debated this so many times I’m not willing to do it again. I’m very pumped for the next fight though, gonna be fireworks!
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
I agree!
It was such a close awesome fight i sure can see both sides. I really am looking forward to the rematch. I like muay Thai better, but lyoto is like a samurai. I think that will play a big part. It would also be cool if shogun just straight up "Pride’s " him.
by Rayce. on Mar 4, 2010 12:41 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think that iron body stuff is more kyokushin
where the matches generally consist of two guys planting their feet and wailing on each other. Machida karate focuses more on footwork and not getting hit, so I’m not sure if they implement the same conditioning routines.
that is a really good question,
I wonder how we could find this out for sure. I know his dad and brother don’t fight like him. So says his father. They’re more straight forward. I really would like to know if they do iron body training.
by Rayce. on Mar 4, 2010 2:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That’s absurd. Everyone gave it to Shogun because he landed more strikes and won more rounds. This wasn’t a case of a guy just doing better than the rest but still losing, it was a case of Shogun being better than Machida, and winning the fight.
ok, you're right.
I am with orcus. Not worth arguing. I can see your point. It really doesn’t matter there is gonna be a do over! How awesome is that!

My friends and I saw this fight at the staples center and weren’t influenced by Rogan and Goldie. None of my friends had seen much Pride so they only were familiar with Shogun’s UFC career. They were HUGE Machida fans as was the whole damn arena. Shogun was actually getting booed inexplicably during his walkout. That’s just how pro-Machida this crowd was. My friends thought Shogun was easily going to get the decision as did I and the very moment when the word “STILL” came
out of Buffer’s mouth there were thunderous boos heard throughout the arena. They were so loud we couldn’t make out a word of the post fight interviews except for “3 JUDGES SORRY GUYS” and when Rogan went to ask Shogun some questions the cheering and applause was equally deafening.
In that fight, Shogun won over a hostile crowd of nearly 40,000 people that were not influenced in any way by Rogan and Goldie’s commentary. Also, many of the MMA journalists and fighters who went on record saying they scored it for Shogun were there too, so GTFO with your “Rogan has you guys brainwashed” spiel.

i think it was a great fight!
I can see both sides o the coin. I am for sure looking forward to the rematch. This is where fighers are defined. Adversity defines champions, and they are both champions.

As Joe Rogan said, “Crowd full of L.A. douche bags”.
Also whenever you have a massive betting underdog who makes it a close fight and it goes to decision then you are going to have massive boos if they don’t get the decision and the effect of the last round being a clear cut win for Shogun has on the perception of the fight as a whole and it explains a lot of the booing.
How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

40,000 people at the Staples Center? That must’ve been uncomfortable, what with 3 asses in every seat.
My mistake, I forgot how many people that place holds. It was pretty close to capacity however.

It was an awful crowd full of people that boo’d every time the fight hit the ground and even boo’d when two guys were standing an exchanging.
How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?
Not... not really.
Tibau vs. Neer got boos. Cain vs. Rothwell didn’t. There’s a reason.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

I don’t even remember boos during Sonnen vs Okami. But yeah that Tibau vs Neer fight was pretty shitty.
by Polyhedron on Mar 4, 2010 12:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Cain vs Rothwell actually got boo’s at the stoppage and the reason it didn’t have boo’s during the fight is that it was a VERY pro-Cain crowd. Cain had a better reaction at the weigh-ins and the actual fight then any other fighter.
How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?
Is it the translator or do all brazilians try to send like wise, deep thinkers?? I swear I feel like I’m lisntening to an old man with many life experiences when I read quotes from Anderon, Thiago, MAchida, Belfort….all of them….
I think it is a cultural thing.

There will be a REMATCH:
Shogun is looking toward their rematch.
Machida is thinking about the rematch.
It wasn’t a robbery, it was a really close fight.
Their first fight is over.
Dana White gave a Shogun an unreported bonus anyway, I believe 6 figures bonus. Let’s move on.
