Some MMA writer predicted that they’d fight on the June card alongside Brock headlining… but I can’t remember the writer to post the source along with it.

Enjoy trying to box with him, Randey!

'Ello G'vnor!

by IHateMMA on Mar 4, 2010 12:51 AM EST reply actions

yeah

if they make this fight, it would be too one sided and end quickly (and a freakshow IMO). Toney needs someone with basic to no ground game knowledge for him to at least have a chance.

Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension

by orcus on Mar 4, 2010 6:11 AM EST up reply actions

No

I’m sorry, but Randy vs. Toney could be competitive, both fighters are mostly 1 dimensional. Putting a striker in with James just to see him swing for the fences is deliberately favoring him, heavily, and creating a freak show.

by Patrick John McGreevy on Mar 4, 2010 7:03 AM EST up reply actions

Randy one dimensional?

:?

Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension

by orcus on Mar 4, 2010 7:40 AM EST up reply actions

Speechless at Randy’s alleged one-dimensionality. In MMA, and in comparison to Toney, Randy is in the eighth dimension somewhere.

Being overrated is overrated.

by bobby g on Mar 4, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

In comparison

To most fighters in the UFC really, Randy is one dimensional.
You didn’t hear a single person raving about how he was going to pick Brandon Vera apart on the feet, and if Randy Couture ever pulled guard I’m pretty sure all of us would collectively shit our pants.

I overstated it a bit however. If you compare Randy to the general level of high competition in the UFC, he’s one dimensional, although I suppose it may be more of a case of him simply preferring to solely use that one dimension.

by Patrick John McGreevy on Mar 4, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

Randy abusing Toney would be epic….

by Koob on Mar 4, 2010 12:51 AM EST reply actions

He would have to go for the takedown quick. Randy has a pretty weak chin.

'Ello G'vnor!

by IHateMMA on Mar 4, 2010 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

I imagine Toney has pretty weak takedown defense…but that’s why they fight. Randy wouldn’t stand and bang with Toney, that’s a given. He would eat Toney alive on the ground, if anything Randy is still a high level wrestler. This would be a very bad matchup for him and a very good matchup for Randy. Toney wouldn’t know what to do if he had to finish a downed opponent. I can’t imagine he will be anywhere as good in shape as Couture…not even close.

by Koob on Mar 4, 2010 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

Randy would even need to take him down.

He could tie Toney up in the clinch all day and smash him with punches and knees. Boxers are used to having the ref break clinches for them. He’d be in for a rude awakening when a Greco monster like Randy started ragdolling him all over the place.

by Steve4192 on Mar 4, 2010 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

Damnit!

would NOT even need to take him down

by Steve4192 on Mar 4, 2010 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

Have him fight Tito

Would be some crazy trash talking and a great opportunity for Tito to GnP his way to a victory. That’s if James will even fight at 205.

by RyanHobbs on Mar 4, 2010 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

Even better...

Have Chael Sonnen come up in weight for the craziest trash talk ever in MMA.

by Roll for Life on Mar 4, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Just think about it like this: Randy Couture who is a light heavyweight kept Lesnar against the cage and even took down Brock Lesnar who is humongous. Imagine how easy it would be for Randy to take down and just smother James Toney.

by chrisbboy82 on Mar 4, 2010 3:34 AM EST up reply actions

And then remember when Coture barely got clipped by lesnar and got TKO’d? Randy is so overrated right now its ridiculous. All Randy can do anymore is lay and pray a decision.

by Dropkick434 on Mar 4, 2010 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

That wasn’t the point of my post at all. Of course, Couture ended up losing. The point was that if Couture was able to take Lesnar down and do his smothering game against the cage even for just a round against Lesnar, then he should have no problem doing the same against Toney. Think about it, against a novice like Toney, if Randy takes him to the ground, what’s stopping him from doing some GnP, and who knows if Toney will give up his back (which is a very novice thing to do in BJJ). Toney isn’t some higher level mixed martial artist (boxer maybe, but not mixed martial artist).

by chrisbboy82 on Mar 4, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Randy is the perfect guy to introduce Toney to the MMA world. Randy is older than toney. which helps toney save some face and the dirty boxing against the cage and then a take down would be sweet to watch. Toney would defiantly leave with new respect for the sport after going in there with a veteran like Randy.

damn

if there’s anyone i’d like to be the representative for mma in an mma vs boxing type match like this, randy would be the guy. his professionalism would go along way towards selling the sport to first time viewers.

by woooburn on Mar 4, 2010 12:53 AM EST reply actions

been below 220 since 2003. He’s a tremendous fatass. 205 will be tough.

How in the fuck is James Toney going to cut to 205? Have you guys seen how big (fat) he is? He’s probably closer to the 265 side of the HW spectrum even.

by Polyhedron on Mar 4, 2010 2:11 AM EST up reply actions

Toney is 5’10. He looks big because of his humongous head.

by dancingChicken on Mar 4, 2010 5:07 AM EST up reply actions

If that is the case. He needs to fight Tito.

idk about randys chin in this

say what u will but everytime randys gotten hit recently its looked like hes been about to go out so having him fight a boxer isnt the best idea

i still think randys gonna kill him but the last thing id want is to see toney ko randy

by milk72 on Mar 4, 2010 1:07 AM EST reply actions

this here. randy has a tendency to try trade a little before going to what he does best. doesnt mean he definitely get caught but it gives a small window to toney

Sifting through the 600+ comments on Toney

All I could think about is how Randy would be his first opponent. In my mind, this is a done deal.

To everyone that just loves to hate Zuffa:

James Toney will flikely fight Randy Couture. Walker fought Greg Nagy. Please shut up.

by Wonderlic on Mar 4, 2010 1:11 AM EST reply actions

Throwing this out there

Remember Luke’s comment (paraphrasing) “I just heard who Randy’s next opponent is and I can’t believe it”.

by Wonderlic on Mar 4, 2010 1:13 AM EST up reply actions

you know espn will run with this. they are a big boxing network.

by pitbull187 on Mar 4, 2010 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Not going the freakshow route

I know Dana throws shit out there but what bout would legitimize this signing more than Randy Couture? I’m not a Randy fan but he is far and away the best ESPN sell as well as the fight I’d like to see the most against Toney.

by Wonderlic on Mar 4, 2010 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

this is actually a bout espn and the media would fall in love with

i can just imagine lou dibella, bob arum and all those old boxing assholes saying how toneys gonna kill randy and all the around the horn and pti guys agreeing

then randy comes out takes him down and beats the fuck outta him and mma fans everywhere laugh their asses off

by milk72 on Mar 4, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

i agree it will get alot of attention

but i kind of want to see him fight someone who will bang with him, although randy sometime might get caught up in a slug fest, HIs best strategy will be to take him down.

by #1 piggy on Mar 4, 2010 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

That's why it works

Mainstream attention, as well as one of the very few mainstream names that would be fighting Toney.

I would just hope to hell that Randy goes straight for that single leg and doesn’t mess around with exchanging. God forbid he loses this potential fight. If Sylvia-Mercer was bad, boxing fans and mainstream media would never forgive this one.

I know if Randy MMA’d him, he would win.

by Wonderlic on Mar 4, 2010 1:31 AM EST reply actions

Of course Randy would move up 10 places in the rankings after beating Toney. No doubt earning another title shot.

by MrJobro on Mar 4, 2010 1:31 AM EST reply actions

Don’t believe the hype.

by MrJobro on Mar 4, 2010 3:36 AM EST up reply actions

Randy has been in prize fights since fight #1

Fight #3 IMO

Fights 1 &2 were against Ludwig Borga and Steven Graham. It was his third fight (versus Vitor) that established him as a guy who finds a way to win against long odds.

The problem with skipping over having at least a decent fight-record on your resume is that MMA, like other sports, is a strange beast. Anyone can be beaten by anybody on any given night, whether it’s because the other guy was fighting hurt or he had a freak injury (torn ACL/LCL/MCL, etc..). It just legitimizes a championship match (and thereby the title for which is being fought for) if the challenger can claim to have faced a plethora of real contenders on his way to facing the champion.

Brock apologists hate to admit it, but it wouldn’t have been the worst-case scenario if he fought at least a few more guys on his way to the title-shot.

by samuraisul on Mar 4, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

It wouldn’t have, but that doesn’t mean that him not having those fights was the worst case scenario.

Brock skipping ahead to the title shot was a very big reason why Randy came back when he did. People keep acting like brock or Dana are the only one’s that had a hand in that decision, but Randy came back to fight Brock. that’s what makes it the right choice.

by Phildo on Mar 4, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

That would be an excellent fight

Randy’s older, so boxing guys can’t make the ’Toney’s so old’ excuse. Although ring-age doesn’t quite work like that but whatever.

I would be interested in seeing how Toney does with his back to the cage. Will his boxing be able to match Randy’s dirty boxing? Obviously on the ground it’s no contest, so let’s see them fight in out in a neutral territory, on the fence, but standing.

by cobracore on Mar 4, 2010 1:35 AM EST reply actions

Method to Dana's madness,,,,,,,,

Look people……. Dana let that BIG mouth douchebag into the UFC for a reason. To teach that fat bastard a lesson!! Toney’s been talking alot of trash on the net making video blogs calling out Dana and saying he’s scared to let him in the UFC. Ok Toney…….Dana has granted your wish now the pain shall begin for you because Dana is going to match you up with real fighters. Let’s see there’s Brock , Lidell, Couture, I even dare to say Ortiz. and I don’t like Ortiz because he sucks. But he can beat Toney. I can’t wait to see the after fight interviews with toney when he loses every fight in his short UFC career. Toney will be humbled by the time he is fired by DANA!! Can’t wait!!

by DaBooYaKID! on Mar 4, 2010 1:43 AM EST reply actions

I hope so

This is the strategy I want to see. Will Dana throw him to the wolfs and make a statement or try and cash in on him feeding him cans. After losing in embarrassing fashion on the ground he will complain no one will stand with him and degrade MMA.

by CROOKS on Mar 4, 2010 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

teach toney a lesson

I have to say that Dana was getting tired of his big mouth and Dana will feed him to the wolves and get rid of him and make a point. Don’t f*ck with DANA!!

Was thinking the same thing. Randy is slowing down a lot recently.

That’s the only window Toney has though – 4 seconds before they clinch.

I see Toney taking Randy down and pounding him out with hammer fists. Toney will avoid Randy’s boxing and shoot for the double leg. Maybe even an Osoto Gari or Drop Seoi-Nagi. From there, it’s all Toney. Hip and neck control straight to the easy sub over Randy.

This could be good, if Toney wins he beats a true (albeit slightly slower) MMA star. If Mirko wins, it would give his career the kickstart it’s been waiting for, not to mention huge mainstream exposure!

Whoever gets him is going to have a great payday on their hands! As for the notoriety that comes with it, well, it’s no wonder so many are keen to throw their names into the hat!

PPV buys and mainstream media attention

The number of people who will buy this just to see Randy slap him around will be huge. Randy loves it because he’ll get a cut of the PPV money and likely Toney will too.

People already mentioned ESPN (who are Uk partners with the UFC) will give this lots of coverage. I think Dana would love for a fight like this to legitimize MMA in some people’s eyes. Having a hall of fame ex-football player is one thing but an MMA fighter beating a boxing (and technically current heavyweight) champ is another.

And if Toney actually wins? Dana will turn around and say ‘See, I told you ****ers this wasn’t a ****ing freakshow!’ They line up the night big name to fight him and laugh all the way to the bank.
